Getting To Know Marco Sturm
-Versatile. Can play top or bottom 6.
-A risky signing with his knee injuries
-A solid 2-way player
-A gritty scorer
Those are just a few things that describe our newest angry German. The Kurtenbloggers have an informative post up about him including history, quotes and even nicknames. I've always called him Marco Polo or The Sturminator. Anyway, check out the Kurtenblogger's "Better Know A Newbie" on Sturm before Mike Gillis trades him away! (Kidding.)
Edit: Also, check out what what kind of charity work he does in Germany. Click on the Deutsche Version and run it through a translator. Amazing stuff!

Is it just me...
…or does he kinda look like Manny (especially in his SB Nation profile)?
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
his foundation
Good evening from Germany! Do you think about the Italian traveller or the German Polo car? Here is the link to his foundation. The content is in German only, but a short description in English too: www.marco-sturm-stiftung.de They didn´t notice the signing yet, will call tomorrow to explain why they got so much traffic from Canada ;-)

I really don't like those knees
I’ve had knee problems they suck ass, the only difference between mine and his is that his knees suck worse I really don’t like that
the only difference between mine and his
Not, sure if that’s the ONLY difference… his support a 30-40 point-per-season body
a ginger ball hockey player... no wonder I'm a Canucks fan
Also (and I don’t know Seal’s medical history) but his also likely have the best possible medical care and the best possible rehabilitation as well. That is generally different than most of us get :)
Nah i had very good physio therapy and other supplimentary treatment afterwards it may not have been as good but it was pretty close

lol yeah don’t get me wrong the surgeont hat did my shoulder surgery this fall was exccellent and I love my physio therapist but I do think professional athletes tend to get the best possible medical care (maybe not tons better but usually still better) because their livelihoods depend on it
not saying Sturm’s knees are or will be ok, but if there is any chance or procedure to make them as close to 100% after the tears then I can almost guarantee he probably had it – still might not be enough though so it is still a gamble :)
Great
Now we’re going to get hate mail from a fan of another German player telling us Sturm has “really nice knees”
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
It’s a twisted logic, but injuries are a good way of getting under the cap, and to have room for deadline acquisitions.
If it wasn’t for injuries, Bieksa would be playing for somebody else (reportedly).
With Sturm and/or Higgins, the Canucks now have goalscoring ability to add to the grit and heart on line 3
Yes, I am British.

That I doubt. Ehrhoff first IMO. You are talking about the trade deadline right?

I'm going to guess he meant last year with Salo's injury?
For Sturm, I’m not convinced that we couldn’t get someone a little less frail who can still contribute for the amount we’re paying him. At least the contract is only a year.
i think he’s more talking about how, if we didn’t have all those rotating injuries last year, we would’ve probably had to trade him to get back under the cap mid-season.

Summer sucks, there isn't hockey on.
I like the signing.
The cap hit is a bit much for my liking, but it’s short-term so I can swallow it (that’s what she said).
If we can get 20 goals from him, as well as 20 again from Raymond and Samuelsson, the team is deeper offensively than last season.
The key is that he goes to the dirty area’s to score. Hopefully that rubs off on some other players. Hell, maybe slide him in with the Sedin’s if he plays well. Even our beloved Burrows is inconsistent taking it to the net.
Losing some of his speed is not the end of the world. he was already faster than most players, so if he can at least skate fast enough to keep up with the play, he should be fine. That’s still a question mark of course, but at least he doesn’t have to be 100% his old self to be effective. As long as he doesn’t turn into Jonathon Cheechoo (bless his heart).

Sturm wasn’t a dirty area scorer though… not built for that. His speed was probably his biggest asset.

2.25 is not terrible
the average player’s hit on a maxed out team is around 2.8 mil. so it’s below that figure!
it seems like we’re going for the “1 top line + 3 good other lines” model.
of course the “2 top lines + 2 good other lines” team would be better—especially since our 2nd line center is so damn good.
I was kind of hoping the Sharks would sign him
Sturm was awesome with us back in the day

I remember being pretty bummed when he got traded to Boston, but then I warmed up to the trade haha But he was a total badass, and hopefully he still is.

I can see "Marco Polo"
sticking around here!
Everytime he scores, a bunch of people will say MARCO!
Followed by a mass reply of POLO!
Oh, the lulz will be glorious.
dang, great idea!
we’ll need to do some photochops for that.

Does Marco Sturm still have knees?
Am I paranoid? I don't know. I went to a therapist once, but I left before he gave me the diagnosis, cause he had it out for me.

Ruud Van Nistelrooy
blew out the same knee twice in two years before signing for Manchester United where he was healthy for 5 years and scored 150 goals. Knee injuries aren’t what they used to be. Plus his knees are probably mostly metal now. He’s like Wolverine. Ruud Van Wolverine.

I think we'll need more guys with metal knees
if we ever end up facing the Bruins in the Stanley Cup finals again.
He’s probably the best goal-poacher I’ve seen in my lifetime. None of his goals came outside of the box, but he was deadly every time he had a half chance.
