A Bit Of: The Canucks Have Disappeared Into The Summer, Mostly

So quiet on the Canucks front lately. The boys are off enjoying their short summer hopefully the best they can. But I do have a few links for you.

Star-divide

First take a look at a hole in one by Joe Sakic at a recent celebrity golf tournament (bingo: $1 million):

Islanders prospect Ryan Strome dangles:

Wild prospect Sam Lofquist. Really? Dear Lord:

This goal was from a few weeks back...an absolute insane tally on a breakaway by Israeli player Eliezer Sherbatov..WOWzers:

Alright, I'm out. Hope you are enjoying your summer!

Case of Molson for Ballard and Hodgson

That sounds just as good.

What do you think Hodgson’s upcoming role with the Canucks will be? Think he takes Torres’ spot on the third line?

I don't think so

I have honestly no idea what’s going to happen with Cody

Trade him

We need to be more like the Red Sox. If we are close to a cup, and I think we are, winning team we should move prospects for impact players that can help us get over the hump. If we are scouting and drafting properly then the prospects will continue to be there. Like Tanev has kind of made someone like Sauve expendable if we can use him to add a winger.

If the right trade comes along no one is untradeable, but lets not pull a Kessel.

SOrry?

Pull a Kessel? The Bruins just won the Cup. Unless you are talking from a Toronto perspective? WHich would make even less sense since we are a Cup contender and in no way do those words describe the Leafs in the last 15 years.

Maybe it was?

Cap room to sign Horton? Several game 7 goals later the Bruins win the Cup. No one will ever know and probably they would have won it with Kessel instead of Horton but maybe not.

I was trying to think of a recent example where a team gave up some good prospects for one player that didn’t end up helping that much.

I am sure there are lots of examples

but that’s why you have scouts and you evaluate what your team needs and you make the best deal possible. I would rather go for it and fail then never go for it in the first place.

GMMG and his team seem to have a low-risk mentality. I mean, his biggest blockbuster trade so far was Keith Ballard and Victor Oreskovich for Steve Bernier and Michael Grabner.

How good of a player do you think we need and what would you be willing to give up?

a ginger ball hockey player... no wonder I'm a Canucks fan

by SteveNux on Jul 19, 2011 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I think we need an elite

winger for Kesler and I would give up Raymond or Samuelson plus some sort of combination of CoHo, Schroeder, Rodin, Sauve, Connauton, CS, and/or picks to get it done.

Why would the other team agree to the trade? They’d only do it if they were giving us an inferior player.

I don’t see them giving Brad Boyes up as they just acquired him. Also Vanek is two years younger and averages slightly more points than Boyes. Since we’re rosterbating, why don’t we just take them both ;)

And Smoboy, I tend to agree – they don’t seem to be trending towards a rebuilding state so it would be a tough trade to pull off.

a ginger ball hockey player... no wonder I'm a Canucks fan

by SteveNux on Jul 19, 2011 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

Meh...

How many top 6 wingers do you need? I count 4…

I would take Boyes because of his expiring contract and has a history of being productive. (29 years old too.) I think he could be the answer for us, and come relatively cheap (They got him for a second round pick.)

I agree they are buyers, but Pominville, Boyes, Ennis, Stafford, Leino, and Vanek will all be feasting for top six minutes. Not to mention top prospect Zach Kassian waiting in the wings (no pun intended)….

You have to figure that Boyes looks like the odd man out in Buffalo.

You say this now

but a key injury or two or just some plain shitty luck and no cup, and then you spend the next 5 years lambasting gillis for mortgaging the future on a chance to win now that failed. I think you’re absolutely nuts if you think this team needs to mortgage their future to win a cup now. Think about it…we were 1 win away from the cup this year, without risking anything. We didn’t lose because we cinderella’d in but were plain outclassed a la the oilers a couple years ago or 94, we lost because we had some untimely injuries and a seeming inability to overcome some good defensive coverage with a hot goalie. You think we need to mortgage the future to make this team cup ready now? You’re being incredibly myopic if that’s the case. The canucks really don’t need to change much of anything to win the cup; they need to manage injuries better during the playoffs maybe, and they need to have a backup plan that allows them to still have offense against a stifling team like boston, but turn us into an alberta team for the next decade so we have a shot next year? Even tho as it stands we have a pretty fucking good shot anyways????

Bah, i’m actually pissed off to see you say such idiocy.

You are still just mad

I piled on earlier with the bandwagon comment.

Couple of questions Twitchy. Do you think we are better now than we were last year? Do you think teams around us are better? Do you think that eventually the Sedins production will start to slow down with age? This team doesn’t have an infinite window despite trying to follow the Detroit “model” which as far as I can tell is fluke out and draft to potential hall of famers in the late rounds. We may be close to winning a Cup but we can always get closer.

Do you think we are better now than we were last year?

hard to say with some of the changes, but i’d guess, probably closer to equal

Do you think teams around us are better?
the ones that threaten us as an elite team? no, not really, just different. No need to hit the panic button. Exception may (and I say may, not definitely) be LA.
Do you think that eventually the Sedins production will start to slow down with age?
of course, eventually. This year? no, not likely. Maybe slightly, but others are still improving more than they’ll decline.

You’re right, there’s no infinite window…that’s not my problem with your comment, although I wouldn’t say our window closed when the riot started either. My problem is that you say you’re willing to mortgage the future for a cup win now. Well, as pointed out above here, I don’t think mortgaging the future would benefit us much now, and secondly, as I stated earlier, you’ll be the first one jumping up and down and screaming for gillis’ head if they do sell out for the quick win and then don’t make it due to whatever circumstances, be they player skill related or just injury/bad luck related.

Personally, I’ll never support mortgaging a team’s future on a gamble now…it’s just bad decision making. You’d never call off your whole tournament life on a bad gutshot draw unless you’re already crippled, would you?

Bad metaphor

this is more like being one of 5 of 6 players with a chance to make it to the final table and make a real run at the tourny. In that case I would shove over and over in favourable situations in order to give myself the best stack possible to make a run at a tournament win. Better to go out in 6th trying to win than hang around and get blinded down and go out in 3rd or 4th without ever really going for it.

If Gillis pulled the trigger on a big time move that mortgaged the future and went for it and we didn’t win I wouldn’t call for his head. I would call him the first GM in Vancouver for how ever many years to show some real stones.

Plus at the start of all this I compared us to the Yankees or Red Sox. Did you know that despite trading prospects for established players almost every year at the deadline they both still have 2 of the top minor league systems in baseball. Now its a little different but if we spend money on scouting and player development then we won’t ever have a bare cupboard. We will constantly be restocking it.

sorry, I assumed u know poker better

calling off your stack on a weak gutshot draw when you’re not desperate is not playing for the win, it’s playing to lose. And that’s kinda my point…the canucks are not in a desperate situation, they’re still very strong on paper and will be on the ice. Why risk all that on a longshot gamble? That was my point… so, I’ll stick with my metaphor… ;)

But if we are trying to pick up another winger then I think Cody starts on the third. Honestly he has this urge to shoot the puck that I REALLY like to see from someone in a Canuck sweater.

As much as I’d like to see Hodgson start on the 2nd line, he really doesn’t have the speed to keep up to Kesler. Can you imagine if he meshed with the Sedins though? Kes & Burr could play together again…

by splnwezel on Jul 19, 2011 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I know

I think Cody has a similar game to the Sedins. Slow movement, but great vision, passing, and an eye for the net.

There are two issues though:
1) The age gap means that the players will never be near their prime at the same time

2) Is putting a third Sedin on that line going to make it better? It’s Burr’s forechecking, tenacity and simple plays that help the Sedins in the areas they are lacking. Three Sedins would probably be easier to shut down.

I still liked the premise of...

The Blue Jackets deal for Jeff Carter.

Jakub Voracek, First Round Pick (2011), Third Round Pick (2011)

We can make a package like that with CoHo as the centrepiece, for a Jeff Carter type player. I was hoping it would be Carter though…

by T.Haynes on Jul 19, 2011 12:00 PM PDT reply actions

But then you have to deal with his salary though, which means getting rid of roster players

Yeah....

that’s the problem with Elite players…. not only do you have to trade away a bunch of young assets, you have to deal with their large cap-hit.

Canucks will be in a worse spot this time next year as there is no way Chicago will lose Game 7 next year. It won’t even get that far. Gillis/Vigneault (& Nonis/Burke) have built a team very difficult to like – soft & full of divers/whiners. There is no way they are going to win the Cup with The Sieve backstopping them (that contract was a tour de force Mike!) or with Thelma & Louise being their top line upfront. Best thing would be to break this team up & pretty much start from scratch. Until then, we might win a few regular season games, but will never be tough enough to hoist the cup. Chicago & Boston have provided the blueprint for anyone who wants to own Vancouver in the playoffs.

Comments on that Province article.

Hahaha, taking a quick look at them. You’d think we’re destined to finish out of the playoffs next year. The majority of fans of this team are a bunch of twats.

by stacie7 on Jul 19, 2011 1:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I can't stop now

Here’s some more choice comments:

The Canucks need strength down the middle somehow pass on Lou and the twins (talented but too passive for the game today) two players with toughness on each line would make playing the game a lot easier.
As it stands right now Canucks have taken a step back in the grit department and that was their undoing against Boston. If they expect to go into next years playoffs with the present team, they will go out in the first or second round.
We have no big wingers, now lack any degree of grit, and short on the blueline. Ballard, and Hodgson have got to go. We have 4.2 mil warming a bench, and a young star that is seeing stars. Signing Sturm is worse that kicking tires, I like my tires. ….We had our chance and did not even contend, nor did we deserve to win. I think if we are going to spend thousands of our hard earned peso’s to watch a contending team, then lets get off our duff and do what you have commited to do. Bring on the hardcore farm boys that will take care of their mates(??), and lets bring a cup home!
The Canucks need a lot more than another forward….as other teams have strengthened themselves considerably, the Canucks have gotten a lot softer, weaker, still leaderless etc if that’s possible..

This one takes the cake:

In my opinion there are still a lot of problems with the Canucks that will not help in their quest for The Cup:
ONE OF THE POOREST DRAFTING RECORDS IN THE NHL
MISMANAGING TALENT, LIKE GIVING AWAY GRABNER
FAILURE IN DRAFTING BC TALENT LIKE LUCIC.
TOO MANY SOFT GUYS AND LACK OF POWER FORWARDS
UNABLE TO COUNTER THE STRATEGY OF BRUINS IN CRASHING OUR NET AND THEIR 5 MAN TIGHT UNIT

OMG WE LOST BECAUSE WE DIDN’T DRAFT BC BOYS. Forget the fact that we didn’t even have a 2nd rounder that year

How many years does it take

to re-build an NHL team, in general? Something like 5-6 years?
So, we have a choice to be a contender next year, or we may or may not be a contender in 2017?
I’ll take next year, thank you.

The pinnacle of that comedy? “I actually got a couple of texts from friends with a picture of my face Photoshopped on Phil Kessel’s(notes) body when he got signed to Toronto,” said Stamkos. “It had my face, name and number of the back of a Leafs jersey. People actually thought it was a real photo.”

Someone at PPP made that photoshop.

I find this hillarious.

It poured all day and although the show went on as planned, it took a comical turn when the royal family arrived at the ceremony and mistook garbage bags placed on their chairs to keep them dry, as rain gear. Next thing you know King Carl XVI Gustaf is punching holes for his arms and head into a garbage bag.
