Canucks re-sign Andrew Alberts for 2 years, $2.45 million
That from Jason Botchford on Twitter. I think this is a good deal. After a rough start with the Canucks 2 trade deadlines ago, Alberts really settled into his role as time went on to the point where you can rely on the guy. Alberts was making $1.05 million last season, so this is a slight raise.

I hate this.
HATE it.
Never been a fan, never will be. He’s at best 6th defenseman, more likely 7th knowing AV’s motto of ‘when in Rome’. Spending that much on a scratch makes no sense, especially when we have a glaring second line gap that needs filling.
GMMG had better have some bigger and more confidence-inspiring moves up his sleeves than this…maybe a San Jose Sharks-patented sign-and-trade? Too much to hope?
They were about to dress Baumgartner in the SCF
You can never have too many Dmen. And Alberts made strides this year. 1.225 isn’t terrible for a bottom pairing guy
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
An Alberts-Rome 5th and 6th pairing….I can see it happening.

I love the depth too. Ballard replacing Hoff’s minutes is fine with me. If he can’t do it, you trade him to a cap floor team and get someone else.
I trust GMMG. Ballard is a good player that needs to show.

I thought Alberts was very poor in the playoffs, and isn’t that why we’re here? I’d have cut him loose and brought in another cheap vet, someone who would be happy to earn less but would die for 14-16mins a game. I just don’t get the feeling that Alberts is a 110% kind of guy.

Not many of those around
You either get a Mathieu Schneider type or a Nolan Baumgartner type who just isn’t very effective anymore.
If Baumer had been given a shot, he’d have been dynamite. Last chance at NHL action, Stanley Cup final? At his age? He’d have left it all on the ice, whereas AA (and admittedly half our roster) left only their pride behind.
Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate Alberts’s talents, but re-signing him doesn’t address our deficiencies…

I don't think it's that crazy
Baumgartner is a pretty underrated defenseman and is built exactly in the mold of “today’s” Dman. He’s the captain of our farm team and if he played for a team without as much depth as Vancouver would probably be playing in the bigs for a chunk of every season. To suggest a guy who’s been so loyal to the franchise wouldn’t step up given the opportunity isn’t really giving him his due. Now to suggest that he would be more stoked than Alberts to go in is a stretch but let’s not dismiss Baumer entirely.
by Canuckelhead on Jun 29, 2011 7:35 PM PDT up reply actions
I had a similar argument with someone a couple years ago
about Alexandre Giroux. There is a reason he is in the AHL. Simply out he isn’t good enough for the NHL. Baumer is a great AHL D man but time and time again it has been proven that he is out of his league in the NHL now. He would have been hacked to shreds. Especially to be dropped into that intensity level after time off. Would have been a bad scene.

It's also possible
That a guy with NHL level skills never gets the right opportunity. Alex Burrows was almost that guy and there’s a long list of guys who have just as much heart and more skill. Thinking it’s just as black and white as NHL level vs not NHL level is taking a pretty narrow view of the politics and chance that are involved for the average to below average NHL player playing in the bigs.

Call it what you want
but if a guy is good enough for the NHL he would be in the NHL. GMs and coaches want to keep their jobs. So if they have a guy who can help them do that they aren’t going to leave him buried in the minors. And if a guy can’t step up when he gets his chance then he isn’t good enough to be in the NHL either. It happens in every sport and particularly in baseball where they have what are known as “AAAA players”. Too good for AAA but not good enough for the big leagues. Alex Giroux is a great example of a ‘AAAA’ hockey player. Too good for the AHL not good enough for the NHL.
And you Alex Burrows example? Almost didn’t make it? Doesn’t make sense. He did make it. Cause he got a chance and he grabbed it with both hands and didn’t let go. He made himself into an NHL level hockey player. He got to the NHL by being good enough for the NHL.

You have to admit
That a guy like Alex Burrows could have never gotten his opportunity. In fact, if the lockout doesn’t happen he probably doesn’t. Disclaimer: I don’t know i’m right, this kind of discussion can never really be proven either way and I’ve had it many times and people whose opinions I really respect have come down on both sides, as a result my thinking can shift it’s always an interesting conversation and since you seem to know a lot about hockey I’m interested in your take. But, my opinion isn’t strong enough to get into an argument.
Now, the best example I ever heard, and the people discussing this were close to it so it still holds weight with me, it was when Cooke was coming up with the Canucks. At the time, as you may remember, the Canucks literally had at least two or three prospects who had roughly the same level of skill as cooke, guys like Schaeffer, Josh Holden and Harold Druken were maybe even a little more skilled. But Marc Crawford and Matt Cooke are both from Bellville Ontario and so Crawford took a shine to him rather than the other guys and gave him more minutes, more opportunity and helped mold Cooke into the kinda player he had been, an agitator. From their Cooke found a role on the team and the other guys never got the same opportunity. A player like Josh Holden never really got a chance to play like Cooke. Had he got that opportunity and tutelage at that crucial time who knows what his NHL career might have looked like. Some guys have to sink or swim and some guys get a hand under their belly. Cooke is one of those guys and there’s lots of them.
by Canuckelhead on Jun 30, 2011 4:28 PM PDT up reply actions
I just feel like if a guy works hard enough
and sticks with it long enough and has enough belief he will eventually make it if he is good enough. There might be a handful of guys who never had an opportunity to show what they can really do. But not that many. And the ones that don’t stick around long enough to get another shot didn’t have what it takes to make it either.

Without having been there
or having talked to Crawford I wouldn’t want to draw a conclusion from it. The mutual home town thing could be a coincidence. Could just be that Cooke was the one most willing to do whatever it took to stick.

not bad option
given that if Sami Salo gets resigned, he is generally only good for 75% of the season.
Alberts performed well enough in that 6 / 7 role and provides depth to the organization.
Alberts provides veteran insurance in the event that one of the prospects doesn’t blow the doors off the coaching staff in the preseason. I would prefer Alberts to be on the squad next year, as opposed to one of our prospects (i.e. Tanev) who would be losing valuable development time opting in as a part-time, bottom pairing defensemen.
Not a bad signing
Overall I find Alberts to be more consistent (and therefore better) than Rome at playing a safe game.
1.225m / year is a decent value. Montador would have cost around 2.5-3 on the UFA market, I’d think.
Rome
Was actually doing a very good job in the playoffs (surprisingly).

Nothing wrong with Alberts
We had him last year, and he was very useful. If we want to maintain the same quality defense corps, we need him this year as well. We know what he can do, and we get what we expect of him.
We still need to find a replacement for Ehrhoff, though.
Los Angeles, CA
Very useful? Really?
-8 in 9 playoff games, combined with (at best) mediocre play. He didn’t play enough to pick up injuries, so what was the reason for his cruddy playoffs?
Hammer-Bieksa
Edler-Salo
Ballard-Tanev
Rome
are the top 7 (if Salo re-ups), leaving Alberts at 8th on the depth chart. I’d rather carry Sauve, or get Stralman or Montador, than waste this cap hit on a non-factor.
Ho hum.
by Azzy Mahmood on Jun 29, 2011 4:40 PM PDT up reply actions
his cruddy playoffs
not playing for a really long time after returning from injury.
His -8
just shows how inaccurate +/- is.
I tabulated SCF Neilson Numbers (check the fanposts) for Alberts, Rome (for his 3 games), and Ehrhoff.
Here are the results:

Quoting the Edmonton Journal writers Bruce McCurdy and David Staples:
Defenders meanwhile, are doing well to break even, and stay-at-home defenders apt to score worse than that.
- Alberts did almost as well EVF as he did EVA. Alberts is a stay at home defenseman. Under McCurdy and Staples’ opinion, Alberts was pretty much at his optimum level.
- I would conclude that Ehrhoff’s shitty performance dragged down Alberts somewhat. They were paired together for the majority of the series after all.
tl;dr, from an analytical perspective, Alberts was one of our better defensemen in the finals.

This would be better if it had their minutes
I remember Alberts playing some pretty sheltered minutes and Ehrhoff being on the ice a hell of a lot with the absence of Hamhuis and the brokeness of Edler. Also, Alberts mostly played with Tanev not Ehrhoff, otherwise their plus minus would be nearly the same. It’s easy to be the “best” Dman when you only play 12 mins a night.
by Canuckelhead on Jun 29, 2011 7:53 PM PDT up reply actions
According to TimeOnIce.com
In games 2 and 4, Alberts and Ehrhoff were a pairing. (10.3 and 7.7 minutes, respectively)
Games 5, 6, 7 featured Alberts and Tanev. (8.3, 9.6, 10.5 minutes, respectively)
Game 3 was a mix and match between all 5 dmen because of Rome’s match penalty.
So you are actually right about Tanev being his regular partner. Thanks for pointing that out.
In terms of playing softer minutes, he drew the Kelly/Peverley/Ryder line and the Boston 4th line for the majority (about 60/40 between those lines)
But if I’ve learned anything last season, it is that teams need to have depth players excel in their given roles. Ballard is an example of this – he’s usually a top 2 or top 4 guy in the teams previous, and this year he was supposed to anchor the bottom pairing and wasn’t particularly effective in doing so. Alberts is always going to be a bottom pairing physical D – and imo, he’s effective at it.
I personally think he’s had a solid year. I would have preferred a 1 year deal, though.
Thanks for looking that up and sharing.
I think he had a solid year too and I think the signing was pretty fair. Not a good deal for the Canucks but they didn’t vastly overpay either. Especially given what’s out there and what UFA’s will be going for. I just took issue with the comment of Ehrhoff dragging Alberts down and Alberts being the best Dman in the finals, it looks like he wasn’t even playing 10 mins. Ehrhoff was playing with a bum shoulder and was asked to take on a lot more responsibility in the finals. I think it’s unfair that people are judging him on that last series. Especially given the fact that so many Canucks played far below their expected level.

I'm not judging him on that last series though
I’m judging him on the ones before it, which weren’t much better (Ehrhoff that is)
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
I know we can't afford him
and I don’t think that even if we could we should sign him for more than Bieksa made. But I stand by the statement that he’s the best UFA Dman this year and if it could have happened I would have loved him to be back as our fourth rather than what we have now.
by Canuckelhead on Jun 29, 2011 8:58 PM PDT up reply actions
I would echo that. I would love him back too. But he would have cost too much and messed up our D line spending for a while (with Edler needing a new contract in 2 years)
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
I totally get that
What I don’t get is the people that were happy he didn’t sign. I understand being happy he didn’t sign for 6, that’s too much. But to be happy he’s not coming back regardless of the contract? It makes no sense.

Depth. Well that depends on how you look at it. On paper it can look nice. But I’ll take a defensive guy playing with Edler so he can jump in the rush over another offensive defenceman like Ehrhoff. And I wouldn’t mind a guy that is bigger and plays tougher. Hmm..sounds like what Ballard could/should be. I liked Boston’s D. Not huge names beyond Kaberle and Chara but they got mean and dirty and got the job done. I really admired what Seidenberg brought too. We don’t need a $6 million D-man on top of what we have. The fact that Ehrhoff is the best D-man on the free agent list says how pathetic the list is.

I agree about the thin list
But it also speaks to the fact that we probably won’t be able to find another guy to fill those minutes. I also agree about Boston but my feeling was it was more about their team D in that series than it was about specific Dmen. It seemed like they defended so well as a five man unit. So maybe that should give me hope the Canucks can do the same with whoever replaces Ehrhoff. I’m just not confident that his name starts with a B and ends with an allard.

I think that if he is given decent minutes he will turn things around.
Might take him and AV (and/or anyone else involved in whatever the reasons are that he was not played) sitting down and going over why things went the way they did last year and what they need from each other to have a good season :)
I commend the dude for playing through a blown up shoulder
that is difficult. But if he wasn’t able to perform, why didn’t he sit out? We had a healthy body (albeit with a damaged pride) by the name of Ballard. Maybe these questions are better directed to AV and Bowness
Ballard was not getting back in
That’s why they called Baumer away from his family on vacation in Cali. and I can say with absolute certainty that was never the plan. He had no idea he might be called ahead of Ballard which is why he made vacation plans. I'm going to assume
The plan is to have Ballard step in to replace Ehrhoff, and hopefully get Salo to come back for one more year for a discount?
Juice / Hammer
Edler / Salo?
Ballard / Tanev?
Alberts / Rome
Seems to be a lot riding on Ballard I guess.

I have a hard time believing it’s AV’s plan to have Ballard replace Ehrhoff. In fact I don’t think there is a way to replace ehrhoff with who is available. I just hope we get a forward with that money. There’s a reason Gillis seemed pissed Ehrhoff didn’t sign for Bieksa money. He knows he’s the best available Dman. What do you do now? Overpay for Kaberle? Doesn’t make a lot of sense to give Kaberle 5.5 to me.

Hamhuis got the same treatment last year too. It is actually an honour that some teams want to waste a draft pick on a chance to talk to you before all other teams do. That’s why players with a no-trade-clause typically refuses to waive it before July 1st (not wanting teams to waste draft pick).
By the way, I have heard that Ehrhoff is a whiner in the locker room.

Anyone else thinking
this is the nail in the coffin to the idea Gillis would try for a PP QB UFA to replace Ehrhoff? Spots on D are running out fast. Plus Gillis seemed intent on convincing the press Ballard could fill in on the PP. Wouldn’t surprise me if we stuck with the D we have right now, with or without Salo.
true
if we’re gonna stick with Ballard AV better give him the ice time he needs to prove himself
Those guys were piled on by the fans
Not the coach. Big difference.
by Canuckelhead on Jun 30, 2011 9:38 AM PDT up reply actions
Because
you know, he has done it his whole career to some success, before arriving here.
Last year was his initiation, or something. Bam Bam was a defenseman way back when, more the quality of Rome or less ( AV only played 42 games for STL)…so he takes his blue line shit seriously. He knows you can have usually one “high risk defenseman” in your 6, and that was the Hoff.
I totally see Ballard replacing his spot because he can. You get a super motivated guy that wants to prove that everything he did last year was not what he has done the previous six.
I fully expect the same, and him having a big year, actually.

I worry about losing the Luongo insurance though – isn’t one of the reasons that we did so well this year was because Schneider played more to give Lu a rest? And Schneider did well in those games?

pretty sure I remember Gillis even saying that while he would like to see Schneider here for the next 5-6 years if the right deal came along it wouldn’t be out of the question. That’s what worries me lol
wait a sec
Parise is scheduled for arbitration. Isn’t there something saying that you can’t trade pre-arbitration?
I need clarification: I know you can’t move the player after arbitration, but if the Devils and Parise agree to a deal before then, do the same rules apply?

They become FA
instead of restricted. The Hawk guys wanted to stay “of course”, but the one act there panicked them into signing them to “above market” deals.
In other words, the worst the team could get in arb with their RFAs is a one year deal. The money is usually pretty fair.
If I remember correctly, the Hawks only did three. The Preds, if they did it wrong, seven!?
I want Ward. Or Spaling. I feel bad for them though. They just, at the minimum, cost themselves millions.
For a team that does not spend to the Cap…whoof.

I think you mean $4.5 million
cause $6.5 would REALLY scare me.
And yeah, you’re right, but keep in mind just how much the cap has increased since the lockout – from $39 million to $63 in 6 seasons, a 60% increase. It would make sense then that player contracts increase by about the same amount over that time, which is why >$2M contracts for third-liners and >$5M contracts for good defensemen are becoming commonplace. And in 5-6 years, assuming no major changes in the next CBA (which I doubt), those numbers could be paltry compared to what they’re getting paid then.
he was pretty pissed when Gillis one it
And I hope Gillis is not done pissing him off.

I'm preparing myself
for mostly an uneventful July 1st. I want it to be bat shit crazy like last year but I don’t want Gillis to make a move just for the sake of making one. It has to make sense and if he doesn’t see anything worth signing in the free agent pool then why not just let wisdom come to you, go via the trade route or something. Either way, he has the next 3 months to get his roster on lock.
