Around SBN: Yankees Deny Rumors That Team Is For Sale

@News1130Sports: Agents for Andrew Alberts, Tanner Glass and Rick Rypien have had NO contact with the Canucks with free agency 3 days away.

Their Twitter feed also is stating that the Canucks and Christian Ehrhoff negotiations are on-going today.
Update: Bob McKenzie tweeted that unless there is a new development Ehrhoff will hit the open market. He even went as far to say that "it's believed VAN is now asking other NHL teams if they have interest in acquiring Ehrhoff's negotiating rights prior to July 1." Apparently the Canucks were offering the Mad German Bieksa money. Now he can go be mad somewhere else. So...it seems we need a top 4 defenceman....or not?
Mike Gillis said today: "I think Keith Ballard is going to be a good player for us next year," Gillis said. "I think Chris Tanev can step up and play more minutes and have a more active role. Sami Salo we'll have for all of next season hopefully, not what we just had. We'll take it as it comes. I'm not sure if there will be a defenseman out there that can help us. We'll see what's available."

Might be waiting on the results of the Ehrhoff negotiations when it comes to Alberts, but it doesn’t look too good for those 3.

Mildly surprised that they aren’t interest in retaining Glass after all the 4th line issues from last year, although I’m certainly not crushed by the fact that it doesn’t look like he’ll be back.

Seeing as how the landscape is, I think Ehrhoff gets done, maybe even 4.7-4.8M, but 3-4 years, no clauses.

Everyone seems to be getting signed for higher than our expectations.

Also, possible, but that’s kinda why I said no clauses. Personally, I really think Ballard/Tanev is a solid enough 3rd pairing that i’d go into the playoffs with.

So down on Ballard right now.

Pair Tanev with Edler, sink or swim him! He played in the Stanley Cup final, I bet he’ll swim.

Gives Eddie a right hand shot., plus I bit it ends up a solid two way pairing.

I prefer to believe he’s still a top-4 guy, and given an entire off-season to heal, recuperate and a full training camp, he’ll be fine.

agreed. We were also so down on Juice as well same time last year, as an organization in salary cap era, the higher$ players must play bigger roles, or they must leave. To do that, they got to get the chance to reset and I think Ballard is going to be for us what juice for us was last year.

well...

glass is about as average a 4th liner as it gets. better than some (hordichuck), worse than some (lappy obviously) so he can be easily replaced.

i like rypien but obviously this team has no room for him.

i also like alberts but he might be out of our price range.

by Jevant on Jun 28, 2011 10:06 AM PDT up reply actions

Good start

but the 4th line needs a Chris Neil or a Shawn Thornton type. Playoffs proved that the refs aren’t going to protect the Sedins and they can’t go on taking that kind of abuse.
I still wish we went after Neil at the trade deadline, I really think he could have helped us win the cup.

by thegreek on Jun 28, 2011 10:18 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't agree

What burned us in the finals, and the reason the Bruins kept abusing the Sedins was because the power play couldn’t score. If you can’t score on the power play there’s no deterrent and the Marchand types will keep doing what they do.

We don’t need a goon around to “protect” them. How did that work for the Hawks with Scott, or the Sharks with Eager?

Scoring on the power play is enough of a protector, and it failed.

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

I agree and disagree. Would love a guy like Konopka who could play that 4th line role, win faceoffs, and punch Marchand’s face in when necessary.

I love Zenon for the same reason

Semi is totally right. The PP plays even half as good stats wise as we know they are, and the Bruins are bemoaning how the refs screwed them out of s Cup.

I didn't say we need a goon

Neil and Thornton play a role and are respected around the league, Eager and Scott are a joke.

The Bruins plan was to go after the Sedins whether the PP worked or not, we need a physical deterrent on the squad, just like every town needs a sheriff.

Every opponent the Nucks faced in the playoffs went after the twins and the physical pounding took its toll as the playoffs progressed which probably had a lot to do with their performance in the finals. By game 7 the Sedins and most of the team was too beat up to compete anymore. A good powerplay and a legit tough guy would be a better deterrent in my opinion.

I agree with what thegreek is saying. Sure, burn the fukkers on the PP but if that is failing they gotta produce 5 on 5. I’m still down with a bigger body with the Twins and Burr down to line 2..or at least having that option. If teams don’t hone in on the Twins all next season I will be surprised at their stupidity.

I agree with both

The thing is, we saw teams in the playoffs, and all regular season, change the way they played because the PP wiped them out.

Teams will always play that way against the Sedins, the white erase board always say “play physical” against them. Its nothing new.. But like I said above, even a modicum of success on the PP would have made a difference.

It works. AV is right that it is a deterrent. Just sometimes you need the Nu_Cle_Er option as well.

I like Ballard and Tanev, Edler and Salo. If Salo doesn`t come back we will need to find someone else. Alberts and Rome are good 7th or depth guys but I would want a better top 4 option with Edler.

Salo should not play any back-to-back under any circumstances, and should be playing only around 50 games, and hopefully all of the playoffs.

Detroit, which just lost Brian Rafalski to retirement, springs to mind. So does Chicago, which just dumped Brian Campbell’s ludicrous $7.1-cap hit. Or Minnesota, who could use Ehrhoff now that they’ve moved Brent Burns in the Devin Setoguchi deal. And Colorado, which just traded offensive D-man John-Michael Liles, and needs to spend big just to get to the salary cap floor.

by Wisp on Jun 28, 2011 12:31 PM PDT reply actions

Well, technically, the player should win out every time. ie: Bieksa probably left 1 year, an extra .5-1M/ year on the board by skipping FA. That’s pretty lucrative from the agent’s perspective.

But why would Ehrhoff be worried? Unless he really wanted to stay, and if he did, he would have taken the same deal Bieksa got.

Why would he care? Trade his rights and like Hamhuis last year he can stroll into FA at his own will.

Ehrhoff has spent his whole life waiting for the one moment where he can cash out playing the game he loves. Good for him, but the potential bidding war for his services will silence some of his faults. Someone is going to get a false bill of goods next week.

If that’s true, then every FA should all sign 1M/yr offers and come play the previous champion. I think there’s a lot of things that go into what the players want. For one, I’m sure pride has a lot to do with it. They all want to be respected, to be paid what they’re worth, and also for financial security. You might think 1M is nothing to laugh at, but at the same time, their knees can give way at any point during a season, and basically that’s 25 years of hard-work that disappears right in front of your eyes.

If you made 70K a year

it would take 14 years to make a million bucks. If a guy makes even 4 million in his career before injury he has more money than most people will ever make in their whole lives. Not to mention the insurance pay outs they would get if their career ended. And NHL pension if they played enough games. So I don’t think that extra million is really making that much of a difference in the grand scheme of things.

Ehrhoff leaving means cap space which means a more interesting offseason for us fans!

Completely support GMMG’s logical plan to offer Ehrhoff the same as Bieksa, the point is balanced salaries to permit a better overall team.

The week leading up to the FA opening

If you give Ehrhoff 4-5 years at 4.7 or so, you have 3 guys at 4.5 or higher. And Edler is going to command similar numbers and a long term.

And who the hell knows what is going to happen with the cap after the new CBA. I highly doubt it’s going to continue to spiral upwards by 4 mil a year

It's a bullshit sentiment.

These guys have a short shelf-life, and career-ending injury is always a possibility.

They have to make as much money as they can while they’re young and healthy if they want a comfortable life.

The idea that every player has to value the shot at a Stanley Cup over the comfort of themselves and their families is bullshit.

A comfortable life?

That’s a joke right? Ehrhoff has already made what? 8-10 million dollars in his career? He has already made more money in his career than probably 95% of the world’s population will make in their lives. He can afford to take less and still be “comfortable”. Just for some context, 10 million dollars is 50 years of 200,000 dollars a year. You can live pretty comfortably on 200,000 dollars a year.

But some want to maximize the amount of money they make in the, what, maybe 20 years they work. And of that 20 years, how much of it comes at their absolute peak, where they can demand top dollar? Maybe 5 years?

by mhsilver on Jun 28, 2011 3:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Well what I am saying is that

the difference between 4.5 and 6 million isn’t going to make much of a difference to the comfort of Ehrhoff’s life nor his families. So to make it seem like he is asking for the most money possible so he can be “comfortable” when he is probably already set for life is preposterous. If he wants to get paid cause he thinks he is worth it or even just pure greed I have no problem with it. Not even a little bit. But you trying to sell that tripe about comfort I have a problem with.

And some want to cash in. More power to them.

But Gillis wants to win, so who do you think he wants? I get the Hawk guys don’t like Gillis for things he’s said, but he’s a very competent GM and he knows the qualities to look for.

You wrote:

That’s true, but that statement doesn’t even get close to demonstrating the level of contemporary global inequality.

If you make $50K a year in income, you make more money than 99% of the world’s population. If you live (or were born) in the developed world, you’ve already won the global income lottery game.

Luongo went for big money/term, Burrows wasn’t going to get more on the market than he got from Gillis (he would probably be worth more now), and Raymond went to arbitration didn’t he? So obviously he wanted more than was offered.

thought it was rask wasnt sure tho

im not so concerned with the amount he was making, more that he had his job taken by thomas much like niemi took huet spot. and the idea of feeling awkward for getting a SC ring when you played for the stanley cup champs

Jobs don’t get taken in the NHL. You play better than the other guy. Also, if you do think Rask got his job taken away, then Rask took away from Thomas a year prior.

Nope

If they’re not playing, they’re not on the cap, from what I understand. Hawks still have to pay the salary though.

Oh, and they’ve kicked Kopecky out too, so that frees up more money too. Sharp will get is 5.5-mill payday…and it might be another (the 3rd) life-time contract.

But I don’t mind giving Sharpie a home til he retires. He’s a warrior.

It does
He has to go on and off the "Cap" again this summer.

Probably just papereork, but he has to be waived through the league again, and is technically part of the Cap again until that happens.

by JJ Canuck on Jun 28, 2011 3:04 PM PDT reply actions

Nah, he's a good puck-moving defensemen

He’s good at getting the puck out of the zone and to the offense, and he can join the rush to put extra pressure on the other team’s defense.

The issue is that Edler provides a lot of the same, and we’ll definitely want to sign him.

So I wouldn’t be surprised if they let Erhoff go.

Truth. Edler is better defensively, and still young, smaller cap hit.

They’re also both left handed.

I think Ehrhoff sees he's the best of a meh bunch and wants to cash in accordingly.

I can’t blame him, but he can get that payday with Detroit or a team with cap floor issues.

by jwolf0 on Jun 28, 2011 3:22 PM PDT up reply actions

I wouldn’t make that assumption he’s thinking that. Would make him a terrible person in my mind.

by Wisp on Jun 28, 2011 3:53 PM PDT up reply actions

That he's looking more at the money and not the Cup?

Obviously we’re all spitballing here. We don’t know for certain what Gillis offered, or what Hoff’s thinking is.

Just going off of what we’ve heard though? (That Gillis offered ~Bieksa/Hamhuis $$$ and Ehrhoff said no) I’d think that he’s looking at 5M+/year, and that’s more than I’d be willing to pay.

If he does hit the market Detroit makes a lot of sense – money to throw and a not insignificant chance at the Cup.

I'm saying the assumption that he thinks he's better then the rest of the D

while Ehr is busy making as sad

Here’s some feel good quotes of a loyal, awesome, true-blue Canuck.

“I never really thought about leaving Vancouver. If the opportunity was here for me to come back, I was going to do everything I could to make it happen. My family is very happy in Vancouver and I’ve been here my whole career. I don’t think there’s many cities in North America that can beat Vancouver.”

“I’m sorry to all the media members out there, specifically TSN, that’s made a living on some of these rumors the last couple summers,” Bieksa cracked. “All joking aside, I’m going to be here for five years and I’ll do my best to help this team win.”

“I probably didn’t make his job the easiest,” Bieksa said. “At the end of the day, I told everybody it wasn’t about money. That wasn’t a determining factor. I probably made his job a lot harder. But I think it was a pretty easy deal to get done and we got it done pretty quickly.”

he doesn't have to do anything with them

When Garth Snow calls he can just go “Lalalalalalala I can’t hear you, is it July 1st yet?”

I think it actually is a good move for the Islanders to try and get a word in before the flood gates open. “Listen, we’re rebuilding, we have a lot of young talent here, we’re ready to make a push, please give us a shot.”

by Wisp on Jun 28, 2011 5:33 PM PDT up reply actions

no I know

but I’m sure he would’ve preferred a trade to somewhere along the lines of Detroit or Tampa nonetheless.

If the Isles can actually get Ehrhoff to listen and offer him good money, it’d definitely be a good trade for them, no doubt. I just doubt Ehrhoff’s gonna sign with the Isles after turning down the President’s Trophy winners for a reasonable contract.

But if the Isles do get Ehrhoff, their D-core starts looking pretty damn good – Streit and Ehrhoff on the top pairing with Harmonic, de Haan and Macdonald in the pipeline.

Well that’s mostly because he’s from here… that’s where most of those rumours come from. There was a rumour 2 years ago Shaone Morrisonn was gonna sign here; not-so-coincidentally, he is also from here. Of course that may be a reason he wants to come here but from what I’ve heard it’s pure speculation.

90% of rumours are either misinterpreted speculation or people passing made-up crap as truth. My rule is if I hear the rumour a lot, there’s probably some substance to it (ie. Hamhuis to Vancouver, trouble in Flyers’ locker room).
