I've had it up to here:
with the silly canard that the Canucks are somehow the major culprit of diving in the NHL. Sure some Canucks do it from time to time, but I'm confident they do it on a comparable level to any other team. My big moment of rage came last night during a much-tweeted altercation whereby Henrik Sedin ended up toppling to the ice after a shove from Andrew Ference after a stoppage in play. The twittersphere and blogosphere all labelled it a clear flop, and after presumably butting in to rant about how something or rather "is a difference maker" as he always does, Pierre "Toews is so thick below the waste" Maguire outright called it a dive on NBC. NO ONE BOTHERED TO LOOK BACK ON THE REPLAY OF WHAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED IN THAT PLAY. Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!
So take a look:
Did you see it? Did you see that Chris Kelly makes a textbook two-handed slash on Hank's ankle barely a moment before the Ference shove? Check again if you missed it. It's hard to notice because Kelly is not the focus of the play, but it's clear as day if you pay attention. I think the likely situation here is Hank fell because his balance was at least momentarily all out of whack at the time of the shove as a result of the slash. If a ref sees that slash, that's a clear penalty 100% of the time (other than playoff overtimes against San Jose in which case nothing is a penalty). That slash, in my opinion, is a far slimier, dirtier thing to do than Burrows' om nom nom on Bergeron. At least that was a one-on-one "oh yeah?" "oh yeah!" "OH YEAH?" "OH YEAH!" girly scrum. What Burrows did was embarrassing. What Kelly did was blindsidedly malevolent. So where's the Chris Kelly "oh my god will he suspended oh wait this is the playoffs and no one gets suspended" discussion?
End rant. (Well, possibly to be continued in the comments).
