A Few Quick Canucks Notes On Game 4 Day
- Alain Vigneault is not tipping his hat on what his lineup is for tonight. But according to Dan Murphy, Sami Salo will play, as will Aaron Rome, meaning Andrew Alberts and Keith Ballard are out. Vigneault was asked why Ballard is not playing lately and he said: "You know what? Right now we've got eight healthy defensemen and I feel the six we're using tonight give us the best chance to win. We've got good depth there and we're going to use it." (Source). So the coaching staff is not into power Ballards. Huh.
- Check out Ken Henderson's latest masterpiece at the Georgia Straight. A "jab" at the Sedins.
- Pressure is on the Sedins now. (The Province) No one on the team is claiming Henrik is injured. Both Sedins got the day off from the media today.
- Daniel Sedin, Corey Perry and Steven Stamkos are the finalists for the Ted Lindsay Award, which is the MVP as voted by members of the NHL Players' Association. (TSN)
- Colin Wilson draws in for the Predators tonight in place of the injured Steve Sullivan. (On The Forecheck). Check out the analysis of Wilson at OTF. He has impressive numbers. He's a big guy. You will notice him out there.

I just don't get the Ballard hate
I haven’t seen him do anything overly bad that puts him into the Rome / Alberts category, and I’ve seen him do some good things that separates him from the other two.
Is it something internal, like he’s not a good locker room presence? Which would be odd since In all the interviews I’ve seen of Ballard he sounded like a stand up guy.
Oh well, as long as we win…
He has been making some bad plays in the D zone. I somewhat see why they don’t like him, but he seems to be on a much, much shorter leash than anyone else

Life in AV’s doghouse. SOB left a vacuum, Ballard fell into it.
Win it for Manny!

Or maybe it was just a very large dimple in space-time…

They’re the 6th d-man. Feelings such as love and hate are too loaded to use in this situation.

Seems pretty obvious
AV doesn’t like the way he plays. It’s just too bad were stuck with him. If that’s as a big a mistake GMMG is gonna make were in good shape

I think it’s that AV doesn’t like the way he plays as a 3rd pairing defenseman.

He isn’t going anywhere either. How the heck do you offload a guy who is being scratched somewhat regularly in the playoffs?
(Wait, you bundle him in as a salary dump in exchange for a potential Calder winner…nevermind!)

Sorry Johnny, what?
Are you implying that he would like him better as a first defensive pairing?
by Canuckelhead on May 5, 2011 3:22 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
1) He’s not going to make it into the top 4.
2) He’s not going to be let to play through his mistakes if there are better options to use in the playoffs.
He’d be a better fit in the top 4, but he’s not going to play there, and unfortunately he doesn’t fit very well in the bottom 2, either.

Why would he be a better fit in the top 4?
What are you looking for from your bottom 2 that you aren’t in your top 4?

Ability to create offense. Who can be a larger defensive liability, ehrhoff or rome?

I think most teams would be pretty happy to have ehrhoff in their bottom pair. He makes mistakes but he is also hyper aggressive which is what makes him a good Dman and I’m not just talking offensive output.

Ballard scratched again
what in the fuck

Because like all coaches
AV has guys he likes and guys he doesn’t. You could ask the same question about why Hodgson only gets to play 5 mins.
by Canuckelhead on May 5, 2011 3:28 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions
because
Hodgson is a rookie who would have to displace either the three-time selke nominee, hart & art ross trophy winner of last year and 3-rd leading scorer this year, or an experienced guy who’s played his role to a t these playoffs to get many more minutes. Seriously. Hodgson is losing out because of depth, not because AV “doesn’t like him.”
Now, if you want to put him on wing, again, who does he displace? Burrows? Hodgson doesn’t have the grit to make space for the Sedins. Daniel? LOL. Higgins? completely different players, no go. MAYBE Raymond, but Raymond is much better defensively and faster. MAYBE Torres on the third line, but again, completely different players. Hansen? Again, speed issue here.
Ballard’s scratching makes me scratch my head, since he’s better than either Alberts or Rome (they are sometimes infuriating to watch, Ballard’s defensive play is much stronger than Rome’s and especially stronger than Alberts’). But Hodgson is competing with WAYYYYY more depth and talent ahead of him.

Ballard is alot smaller than Alberts and somewhat smaller than Rome. AV seems to be opting for larger D men.

Thats what I thought too
Albie and Rome both did a good job against their matchup, the Tootoo line.
Mostly with their size making a difference.

I get all that and I'm not suggesting he plays on a different line
I just wonder why you would bother dressing him to play 5 mins. The chance of him being able to get into the flow of the game is next to nothing with 5 mins. Reskie was getting more time. Glass is getting more time. If he’s only going to get 5 mins put him in the pressbox.
good point

Any reason we haven’t seen him in this series yet?
