If this doesn't say "contract extension" I don't know what does
“Every year it gets stronger and stronger,” Bieksa says. “All of our wives are really close now and the kids have all grown up together and Burr just had his first child. I hope in the next few years our kids will be close to his. Kes’s daughter Makayla and my son Cole have been very good friends since day one and our families have been close so it’s great. Kes and I room together on the road. It’s a good friendship.”

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

"You can't come in my kitchen, kick my dog, and take a box full of ballpoints! Your ass must be crazy!"

sounds good, but i wonder...

how much does “hometown discount” average to. 10%? hard to get statistics, because whenever somebody signs a contract they always say “it’s not about the money” but at least on the canucks, look at hamhuis and sedins probably around 10%. i don’t think burrows was a discount because the time he signed it he just got moved onto the sedin line and kes… i don’t know if 5 mil is exactly a discount. today it is of course, but at the time it didn’t feel like a 10%.

4.5 might be a soft cap for D-man on the team, but i imagine someone is willing to sign bieksa up to 5.5. 10% discount means 5, which would be a 1.25 mil raise, probably borderline something we can handle. if ehrhoff get a 1.4 mil raise to 4.5, that’s already 2.65. estimates for increases in next season’s cap range from 1.5 to 4 mil, say we take 3 mil. 2.65 out of 3 mil is a pretty big chunk, not much left to sign the other guys. i imagine we’re losing higgins and alberts, but their replacements wouldn’t save us much—maybe 750k total. we’re really cutting it close (not that we aren’t this year) with guys like hansen needing new contracts. we’ll see what happens after the SCF.

Salo will come off the books when we don't re-sign him

and we’ll use his salary to pay Juice/Blasthoff accordingly and reasonably.

not quite

he’s responsible for us ~3.5 mil over the cap.

by Lingyis on May 30, 2011 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

Indeed

Salo’s money is virtually a non-factor, since it’s gotta be cut just to be spent.

If Ballard isn’t in the long term plans, the easiest thing to do would be to move him for whatever you can get, clear up that money, and then allocate that to Ehrhoff/Bieksa.

my mistake

move Ballard I guess.

If the cap goes up

you can still field basically a very similar line up, giving raises to basically the guys who earned it. A lot of the depth guys have played well, but not out of their contracts, so I don’t see huge raises to guys like Raffi or Lapierre.

This assumes a few things, that Bieksa and Ehrhoff will take a slight discount, that we keep Raffi & Hansen, Higgins and Lapierre, all solid playoff contributors, make modest raises. Don’t forget injuries also tend to help out a bit and I would never bank on an injury-free season, especially for this season.

I'd be okay

with letting AA go.

yeah

we could get someone like Tanev or Sweatt up there was well, so not really so bad, though AA does bring a certain presence that others lack.

That, and arguably, Hansen gets closer to 1.5, but I’m sure it’s doable.

Especially if that cap goes up to 62 or even 63 as there was talks about that number.

The biggest issue is whether Bieksa/Ehrhoff are willing to take below market value to stay here.

1.5 for Hansen?

Good lord I hope not. It seems he played to his contract level, tbh. Sure, he’s a heart guy and has great speed etc.. etc… and maybe even the possibility of some break through on talent. But the fact of the matter is, he hasn’t broken through yet. He’s making $850000 now, and I don’t see what justifies him bumping up almost double, when his play has been about what was expected of him at arbitration. 1.1. or 1.2 I can see, but 1.5?
