Around SBN: Shaq As Orlando Magic General Manager? Don't Bet On It

Yep, Oreskovich is back on his way up from Manitoba. Speculation is that this is to fill in for Mason Raymond, for whom we still have no update on that stinger he took in Anaheim yesterday.

I saw on the twitters that he’s practising with the team

yeah, but i just saw this:

I heard he was coming to PHX, but I personally haven’t seen him yet. RT @rockhound9: @sportsnetmurph has Higgins joined the team yet?

yeah

you don’t want to disrupt your third line chemistry right now, so I guess tambo replaces mayray on the second line? Could be good to shake things up and push Kes and Sammy back to the goal columns?

by Canuckles on Mar 7, 2011 11:54 AM PST up reply actions

This is Tamby’s chance to redeem himself to AV

He set the bar pretty high the first time Raymond was sidelined

by seedvt on Mar 7, 2011 11:54 AM PST reply actions

Here’s my question:
Why don’t the Canucks have the Moose play Cody Hodgson as a winger for the rest of the season? In fact, why haven’t they had him there all season? Clearly that’s where he’s going to need to play to crack the Canucks roster. The AHL is the opportunity to get him some experience.

by Beantown Canuck on Mar 7, 2011 11:56 AM PST reply actions

This particular callup? Cuz VO only makes 575K, and CoHo makes 3 times that. I suspect Cap played a part.

Why would you not want your best prospect to play the position he has played his entire life, and he is good at? Center is much harder…a smart young guy like him could move to wing if needed pretty easy.

Center is all about thinking the game, winger is just up and down the wing. I do remember when they signed Money them asking him about if he could play wing for CoHo. There is two thirds of your third line next year, with Money taking all the important draws.

The AHL though Bean, is a place where, on wing, it would be all about his size, and other teams running him more. Centers get hit too, but its on the first line of the job description for wingers…

Just my .02 cents

by vancitydan on Mar 7, 2011 12:14 PM PST up reply actions

the reason being

tehre is no centre position on the canucks. Period. He will not be a centerman on the Vancouver Canucks barring some sort of injury to one of our top 3 guys that no one wants to see. So if he’s going to be a Canuck, he needs to get experience being a winger.

by Beantown Canuck on Mar 7, 2011 12:25 PM PST up reply actions

But thats what I just said. There is. Money moves to the wing, but takes important draws. Its like having two centers in case one gets tossed. Money maybe even gets moved to double on a 4th line as the center for a super checking line as well.

Manny is bigger, and more suited to the wing. CoHo will be your 3rd line center next year. BTW…thats exactly how SJ used Money the year they had him…all over.

(Going by what they were supposedly planning when they signed Money )

i think it's just crazy

to ask the best faceoff man in the league to not be centre
but that’s just me

by Beantown Canuck on Mar 7, 2011 1:00 PM PST up reply actions

He would end up with almost as many draws. Maybe more if he doubled on the 4th.

Not saying its so…just that they have a plan for CoHo, and we can just speculate without knowing the blue print.

I think CoHo

Will become the 3rd line centre and then work his way up to the second line centre. Kesler will become the first line center at around age 27-30 and the Sedins will become the 3rd line in their older age.

I believe that is the current plan, but a lot can change depending on opportunities between now and then… therefore I see Cody staying at centre.

a ginger ball hockey player... no wonder I'm a Canucks fan

by SteveNux on Mar 7, 2011 2:08 PM PST up reply actions

Kesler turns 27 in 6 months…

by Beantown Canuck on Mar 7, 2011 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

I actually would think a Sedins-Kesler line would be a pretty good line. Not sure if moving Hank to the wing would necessarily be a bad thing. Then CoHo could center the second line and leave Malhotra to centre the third line and take important draws.

by marcness52 on Mar 7, 2011 3:34 PM PST up reply actions

Maybe in desperate times

When we needed goals badly – but I wouldn’t want to roll that all the time, as you’re really throwing all your eggs in one basket there. But it would be a sick line

by Semi_Colon on Mar 7, 2011 4:46 PM PST up reply actions

I think you’re understating the nuances of playing the wing in the NHL. Especially since the canucks play a first man back plays the “center position” defensively.

by Canuckelhead on Mar 7, 2011 12:58 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, the forwards all rotate on the forecheck. More the responsibilities in their own end I was referring to.

by vancitydan on Mar 7, 2011 1:10 PM PST up reply actions

Actually for the Canucks

I think the forwards cycle on the backcheck as well. My understanding is it’s not as rigid as it used to be and that whoever the first forward back is, he’s responsible for what used to be considered the centers duties.

by Canuckelhead on Mar 7, 2011 1:47 PM PST up reply actions

What about moving Kesler to wing

and having CoHo center him and whomever? Face offs aside, I think Hodgson could be at least as effective as Kes at center (he may have better vision) and Kes may be more suitable as a winger than as a center.

"Why are we so quick to blame? What is the attraction in that?" - Carmela Soprano

by Bobby Canuck on Mar 7, 2011 2:35 PM PST up reply actions

again

kesler is a top 10 faceoff man
and has proven himself in that spot
i don’t think you aim to change a part that works
you add parts around
either CoHo had to be a part that fits around or he has to be exchanged for other parts, imo

by Beantown Canuck on Mar 7, 2011 2:42 PM PST up reply actions

So let Kes take the fo’s. Why can’t he be a winger and still take face offs? CoHo could put in lots of work to be a good face off man in time. Nothing’s set in stone and the Canucks, under AV, seem to be a team of interchangeable parts. My instincts tell me that CoHo could be a better center than Kes.

Since when do injuries make a team better / the same? Nice job, Canucks!
