Lately we've seen the Canucks play 5 non playoff teams in their last 7 games. A lot of the time they seem to be coasting against inferior teams. I get this feeling that those kind of efforts are not going to fly against the Preds, who have won 6 in a row to solidify their playoff spot. These guys don't score a lot of goals, but get it done defensively, get great goaltending, and play disciplined hockey. I was a bit shocked to see them ranked 26th in the NHL on the power play and even 28th overall in shot-blocking (see above).
I mostly wish this f*cking regular season was over. I'm sick of seeing injuries and don't want to see anymore of them. The Canucks are going to clinch top spot anyway. All that matters to me now is Daniel Sedin winning the Art Ross trophy and if he is lucky, the Rocket Richard.

And agree with the main point, to a degree.
But, like it usually is with those fellows, a bit too sensitive. For instance, the bit about TSN spending an inordinate amount of time mocking the Carrie headline.
It was one line in the story. How long does it take to say one line. They laughed because it was funny, and he made it the main part of that point.
Or, the “velvet on the walls” of the Roxy. Anyone that has been to the Roxy know decor is far far down on the list of accroutrements of that place. It might even be called a “honky tonk” in a West Coast, never been to a real honky tonk way. The players and such go to private rooms, and I imagine they are splendid. I am sure “Tootsies” probably offers the same to their celeb clientele.
Its funny. I love most of the Preds fans I have talked to. They are as knowledgeable and passionate about their team as any other.
Got a huge chip on their shoulder about it though. Yes, the times when they were as sucky as the other “Southern” teams are getting in the rearview.
But its not perfect yet, they still need to get NHL help ( could be wrong there, if I am I apologize) in revenue sharing. The fact that some media choose to still remember when they were buying their own tickets to qualify for it, has Boots as an owner, and were begging for people to come is sad, and wrong.
But its a minority as well. Most articles I read are quite up on the upswing and puck excitement.
But then, I am not reading them with a “see what they said about us, those bastards” outlook.

I think Chris (and I’m not speaking for him – this is just my interpretation of the post) is pointing out that the “financial shaky” and “limited fan base” were always pointed out as what was wrong with non traditional markets (read Nashville). I don’t think he’s saying that you have to find out what’s going on with every team – but if you make a statement, at least have some facts to back it up, rather than an opinion that someone in the media presented to you.
No, you’re right – all I’m saying is that the finances have more or less been worked out in the last year and the fans are killing it attendance wise. There might’ve been in the past, but attendance is the least of the Preds’ problems right now.

Proof on MY part – how about that? But I will say that Pred’s game attendance is up this year (actual numbers), and it’s not due to giving away tickets, gimmicks, etc. The fan base is growing, and I for one, am glad that it’s growing. Gives us all more reason to enjoy the sport of hockey.

Weber ain't a sacred cow dude....
….and it wouldn’t be alltogether stupid for us to let him go. We’ve got two players better than him, Suter and Rinne who are also gonna command top dollar. I don’t like the idea about having $20 million tied up in three guys, and believe it or not, Weber is the least valuable of the three.
Just think about what I said when it happens in the offseason.
Who knows, maybe he’ll end up in Vancouver and we’ll get the Sedins? Or more realistically of course, we’ll get Kessler and a blue chip prospect.
And only a few people from OTF agree with me…the ones with foresight.

We LOVE Weber, and his play, and his skill set. But we don’t really HAVE to have him.
Between Edler/Hamhuis/Bieksa/Ballard/Rome and a prospect, that’s not a bad bottom 6. And that’s assuming we only resign one of Ehrhoff/Bieksa.
But, who doesn’t love Weber? A big physical #1 Dman with a big shot?

He’s our 3rd Dman pairing. I really like him a lot. He can take stupid penalties here and there, but I love his physicality. He bitch-slaps dudes in front of the net which is something we’ve been sorely lacking for years. He’s also an excellent penalty killer. Whether he did those things for y’all or not.
On the other hand, Hamhuis was our 2nd pairing Dman and we’ve replaced him with Kevin Klein and Bouillon/Blum. Blum is the heir apparent though. Both are better than Hamhuis. Easily.

Ellis is anything but
a sure thing at the NHL level though. Very good young player. We will see if he can be a Rafalski type or not. Can be hard to learn how to play in this league at that size and avoid injury.

And just because Karlsson has been good doesn’t mean Ellis will. Are you doing this on purpose to be an ass?

As someone who has watched a LOT of Ryan Ellis live and on television
…he has to be the shortest 5’11" I have ever seen.
He’s tiny out there. And I’m not saying that to try to incite anyone, but I have watched him for 4 OHL years now, and he’s always been one of the smallest guys on the ice, even now that he’s older than almost everyone else in the league.

Like I said he is very good
and he gets by in junior. So there is a chance he will figure out how to stay out of trouble physically in the NHL. He can certainly run a power play.

Well,
I guess it remains to be seen. Luongo’s done very well for us in the playoffs actually, but there’s no doubt…the past two seasons he did not do very well against chicago either time. Last season’s loss i attribute more to the whole team than just lu…but still, he didn’t bail us out when he needed to. We’ll have to see what this year brings.

When Lu has looked bad
the rest of the team has looked worse. So I find the whole “Lu chokes in the playoffs” a bit of a spurious argument. Last year I recall several instances of our third line basically handing the puck to the Hawks for odd men rushes, leaving for a change and then waving at Lu yelling “good luck with that!”

3. Finally, I woulnd’t say that we had serious financial problems. We just had an owner that wanted to sell the team. Balsille walks in and says he’ll buy the Preds, then the NHL says no and we get a private group to buy the team. Our movement was less imminent than you would like to believe.

I saw somebody refer to playing Nville in the playofffs as a physical series....
….but the Preds don’t play that way. It’s all about speed for us. Death by a thousand bee stings if you will. Tootoo, O’Brien, Smithson and Weber are the only people who go out of their way to be physical. And Bouillon too, but he’s on IR.

He’ll DEFINITELY knock your a$$ off the puck. You know, I’ve been noticing that more and more this year. When he wants the puck, be it in the offensive or defensive zone, he’s gonna take it from you. People win physical battles with him very infrequently.
And I don’t know this for sure, but the forwards Toews played against was probably mainly Legwand, Smithson and Ward. Smithson and Ward can be physical.
And in our first home game I remember Weber knocking Kane into the previous week. He really took Kane off his game (that one night). Frankly, I’d like to see him be more physical this year in the playoffs. We absolutely need that from him. For example, if we play your Nucks, don’t you think that making the Sedins fear for their health at Weber’s hands would throw them off their game? I think that Weber could become that elite Dman if he imposed his will on superstars a little more. Within the rules of course, but that’s the next step he’s gotta take in my opinion.

I agree that Rinne is a good choice for Vezina, because Thomas’ “dominance” is overstated and that Rinne’s stats are a lot closer than the numbers suggest.
Sorry I wasn’t more clear.
Just to be absolutely clear, I would consider Price as someone meriting consideration, given his success in conjunction with his workload.

You must be kidding. If you are going to include goalies in that consideration, the goalie you consider is Price, not Rinne.
Rinne, under similar workload last year, was just average (similar numbers) yet team defence ensured a playoff spot. This year, same deal. Rinne is one of 3-4 goalies I consider equally worthy of the Vezina this year. He’s played very well and would be deserving. I think the focus on a couple of stats skews the process against Rinne, when the difference is way closer than people like to admit.
The habs are easily contending for a lottery pick without Price this year.

Coaching – Very good and pulls all players up, not just a goaltender
Defence – Haven’t you been singing praise for your D here all day? Having a strong back end works wonders to keeping the puck out of the net.
The preds are not the most talented, but are well coached, disciplined and gutsy players who play a stingy and effective defensive system. That is the biggest component to success. The Habs are of a similar talent level with a weaker defensive core and worse coaching. Yet Price has kept them challenging for their division almost all year.

part of your lack of goal production is the system Trotz plays, not just lack of talent. The habs have a more offensive game (hahahahahahahahahahahaha). But their D is not very good and the coaching system isn’t as good either. Trotz is routinely, and justifiably lauded every year for his abilities. You are by no means relying on Rinne to the level that the Habs are on Price, and that is saying a lot in the East. Think about it. Without Price, the Habs are a shit-awful team in the East.

Factually speaking, there’s a pretty good argument for the Canucks being the best matchup for Nashville. I’d rather play the Coyotes, but I won’t whine too much if it ends up being Vancouver.

Yeah, I would, because as I’m sure you guys know, stats don’t tell the whole story. I’ve seen how the Preds play the Canucks, stats be damned. Both teams are fragile in the playoffs, though, so you can basically throw everything out the window.

Fair enough Chris.
Not that I’m conceding anything, but Nashville is probably the team that I’d least like us to go up against, other than Chicago. In games where 1 goal is probably all that separates 2 teams, Rinne and Trotz is probably enough to keep your team in any series.
But, still, there are no teams that I’m not confident in playing against, and our record shows this is not really over-confidence on my part.

Would think that the longer the series goes the more likely that the more talented team will win.
I’d have a hard time hearing argument that the Preds are more talented than the Canucks.
I would be very concerned if we were facing off in a best-of-3 (the Preds might scare me more than any other team if that were the case). But in a best-of-7, I’d be much more concerned with a team that has more actual scoring depth.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
There’s no argument that holds water saying Nashville’s “more talented” than the Canucks.
That said, I think the Preds’ defense is better, and I prefer Rinne to Luongo. If Nashville buckles down and plays Barry Trotz’s system to perfection, then you’re going to have a heckuva time beating them (anyone is, that’s how it’s designed).

I agree with you, Chris, except for the Luongo part..for now. I do love me a tight D structured team. Works very well in the playoffs. But then again, we are #1 in goals against and you are #2. So it’s close.

I don’t necessarily disagree re: defence, and I don’t necessarily disagree on Rinne versus Luongo. But I think both of those are “close”.
The forward gap is tremendous, and I think that will be displayed in a 7 game series.
But of course, anything can happen, and all it takes is a hot goalie and a cold shooting % for a couple games, and season over (see 2010 Washington Capitals).

Statistically the two teams
defensively are a wash. Luongo and Rinne this season stats wise are a wash. The only thing that isn’t a wash is the goals for.

is not based on your logic, which I think is fair. What i object to is the generalization of criticisms a la “Luongo suxorz” and “President’s trophy teams don’t win” and " Canucks are just going to choke so they will be an easy match" and “Canucks aren’t as good as everyone says they are because they are the canucks” (last one my editorial)
