No word on what is wrong with Hamhuis yet. I'm not seeing a head injury in that play. Maybe his shoulder...
Hope he's alright.
UPDATE: It is a concussion according to Vigneault post game. DAMN IT

To me, it looks like a knee injury. Bieksa’s 200 lbs and he falls awkwardly onto Hammer’s leg.

I would think

The symptoms would have to be pretty severe for a player to miss the entire playoffs for a team that’s not only a contender but a favorite to win the cup.

I dunno why

He seemed alright and there’s no reason to force him back into a meaningless game. The fact that bieksa was downplaying the retirement thing when asked makes me think it’s not too bad. When manny got hurt you could tell from what the players and av said how serious it was. I don’t think there’s any reason to assume the worst in this case.

by Canuckelhead on Mar 27, 2011 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

Hamhuis has said he would consider retirement if he felt he was risking his quality of life after hockey. “If there is more [concussions] to come, I think you have to take a look at what is important,” Hamhuis, the father of two, said after suffering a concussion last month when his head struck the glass on a heavy check by Ryan Getzlaf. “If I ever felt like it’s like putting myself at risk long term, then I’ll have to step back and think about things.”

Yeah, this is what the province has on that.

The whole ice time debate is specious as well.

Its only because he does not play PP time. He had over 20 minutes…still a little less than the others, but that is totally PP ice time.

Canucks are not playing a forward on ant PP configuration any more.

I am OK with Rome getting that time too. His shot is accurate, it was #3 in speed behind Hoff and Sami, and he will lose that time when Edler returns anyhow.

Ballard has been awesome. Today with the 5 Dee, he was on more than once with the Twins…and had another great game.

Speaking of Edler

And perhaps relevant due to the as-yet-unknown duration of Hamhuis’ injury…

Have we heard anything recently on Edler’s progression? It’s been near 2 months now since he went out, and at the time I’d heard 8-10 weeks for an approximate timeframe.

Good point

but you must be able to get some sort of salary relief if a guy is out long term and there are 8 games left. Otherwise that’s a huge disadvantage if a team is at the cap a guy goes down with 6 games left and they can’t call anyone up. Could theoretically cost a team a playoff spot.

He had the force of two guys go through him and fold him in half.

Its going to take anyone out for a bit.

If the docs prognose, and he decides thats enough, that is one thing. But not every damn player that gets a concussion, or two, or even the four in his career…

It depends. They have grades just like sprains of ligaments.

I take a more wait and see on all that. Every situation is different. Because he gets a “concussion” today does not mean he is Brett Lindros…

If he was hurt

somewhere other than his head I would agree with the first line. But all that happened to his head was it hit the ice. And not even that hard. And his helmet hit first. If that lead to another concussion it is getting into that territory where he should consider it. Even if it is just a mild one it shows that he is getting more and more prone.

Not only did the side of his head hit the ice,

he also had his head bent when it was forced between Nash’s sizable torso and Bieksa. Lots of potential for damage there.

by slackjaw on Mar 28, 2011 8:25 AM PDT up reply actions

I don't think having your head bent

(if it is possible to bend a head) would cause a concussion. Not enough force there to get your brain sliding around.

Well

I was reading somewhere (here?) a guy’s account of his own concussion experience. He basically said that he got a mild one (probably similar to Hammer) and then for about a year falling down and really hard hits triggered symptoms. He spent a year conditioning but no contact and came back fine for 5 years now.

Don’t forget he just had a concussion a few weeks ago and could be close to, but not at 100%.

Yeah see

Watched that thing a few times, and don’t think his head hit the ice at all…more his back.

I would think the damamge was from the force of two big men going through him, and the whiplash…I think I read somewhere that not all concussions involve direct contact to the noggin’.

Just sayin’, lets have some calm before saying…well…whatever about him.

is the word.

by AttilaS on Mar 28, 2011 11:48 AM PDT up reply actions

But I can also imagine

that Chicago will be perfectly happy with facing the Canucks, and somehow wiggle itself to finish 8th (if that’s possible). They may be thinking that they rather meet the Canucks, just for the simple fact that they may not be as good as the Canucks, but at least they may have a phsychological factor playing into their hands….while they got nothing over Detroit.

If they buy into that shit

They should hire Theo Fleury as a motivational speaker.

Every Canuck players says something about wanting to face the Hawks when asked…

If that team…THIS year, feels like it…well, bring it the fuck on!

by AttilaS on Mar 28, 2011 12:37 PM PDT up reply actions

I doubt the Hawks think that

I seriously doubt anyone wants to play Vancouver in the first round and I don’t think the Hawks are foolish enough to think they still have that edge with the huge step they took back this year. LIke i’ve said before, the guys that gave them that psychological edge are gone. Look at Buff the other night, Ladd? gone, Versteeg? gone. Duncan Keith? exhausted. Not to mention questionable goaltending. The Hawks are at the bottom of the playoff picture for a reason. They are one of the weakest teams and I wish everyone would start talking about them as such.

by Canuckelhead on Mar 28, 2011 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

The Hawks

‘weakness’ is overblown. They have the second best goal difference in the West. They are also 5-5 in shootouts. The teams ahead of them are:

Ana 4-2
Nash 6-4
LA 9-2

If the Hawks had say a 7-3 record in shootouts they are above Anaheim. A similar record to LA and they could be as high as 5th.

Oh and of all the players who could be in Luongo’s head Patrick Kane is top of the list and he is still there. If you believe in that type of thing. Which I don’t.

Yep

The reason they are doing so “poorly” is because of their record in one goal games. If you look at games that are won by 2 or more goals, without an empty net, you get this:

Vancouver Canucks (22-8, .733)
Chicago Blackhawks (21-9, .700)
Detroit Red Wings (19-13, .594)
Nashville Predators (18-13, .581)
Los Angeles Kings (17-13, .567)
Calgary Flames (16-13, .552)
San Jose Sharks (16-13, .552)
Phoenix Coyotes (15-14, .517)

If it’s the shootouts I can see the argument but you can’t take out close games. That would speak to quality of opponent and quality opponents are all you have in the playoffs.
Look, I’m not trying to say the Hawks suck, they don’t. All I’m saying is they get too much credit on these boards. They simply aren’t the powerhouse they had been and I don’t think anyone thinks of them the same way, especially not the Canucks. I would rather play the Blackhawks then any other current playoff team. Think about how we match up with them from position to position and I think you’d have to agree. GMMG built this team to beat the old Hawks and their style specifically, let alone the new not as good Hawks.

by Canuckelhead on Mar 28, 2011 1:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Top end talent

the Hawks are still as good as anyone. Toews, Kane, Sharp, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook, Campbell and Hjalmarson are as good as any team can put up there. It’s the depth where we have an edge. Of course top end talent can make life uncomfortable even without depth. Not that I am saying I fear the Hawks because I don’t. I think we would beat them pretty handily. But that does not mean they are not a very good team.

I understand

They are a good team, they have to be to make the playoffs. Like I said though we are specifically built to beat them. Which is why the Detroits and S.J.‘s don’t worry me either. It’s the teams we aren’t built to beat that give me concern and those are the ones everyone should be concerned about. Not the Blackhawks, that’s yesterdays news.

by Canuckelhead on Mar 28, 2011 2:01 PM PDT up reply actions

Just because we are 'built'

to beat a team doesn’t mean we will beat them.

So you are this year's Hawks

You may start the game winning, but just seem to lose it in the third. Built to win, but just lacking a little something. Lots of talent but not clicking on all cylinders.
