I suppose if you were shooting for a new record for wins in a season, you'd want your opponent to be one that you've absolutely dominated as of late. And the Vancouver Canucks find themselves in that very situation as they get set to hit the 50 win mark for the first time in franchise history with a win this afternoon over the Columbus Blue Jackets. As always, I like to mention the danger of complacency. Not that a loss hurts them, but it certainly would be better to get it out of the way today, and not be looking ahead to a showdown with Nashville Tuesday or Los Angeles at home on the 31st. So apologies to the fans of the Jackets, but it's gonna have to be like this.
Even though it's really looking like the Canucks are going to win their first President's Trophy in franchise history, there's still lots to play for. Daniel Sedin needs to put some distance between himself and the surging Corey Perry. By the same token Henrik Sedin might wanna make up those points and get back into 2nd place himself. Corey Schneider is starting his 20th game, looking for win # 15. He has a personal 5 game win streak on the line, and the Canucks have won 8 straight on the road, today's win will give them 25 for the season.
Quite a crazy night in the NHL Saturday, as we said farewell to the playoff aspirations of a couple teams. The New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs are done after losses last night, and Carolina and Dallas saw their chances hurt after coming up short. Calgary kept themselves alive with a 5-4 shootout win against Edmonton that saw the Flames score 3 in the third to send it to extra time. CBC's Mark Lee called it an epic comeback, but when you consider the AHL caliber roster the Oilers iced, anything less would have been embarrassing. The Flames are now 1 point back of the Chicago Blackhawks for 8th place. The Hawks couldn't hang on to a 1 goal lead, as Corey Perry tied it, then scored with less than 4 minutes left to give Anaheim the win. Big victory for Ray Emery in goal for the Ducks last night. I want to stress something here: the real story is the possibility of the Hawks missing the playoffs, not if the Canucks are worried about facing them in the first round... Los Angeles beat Colorado 4-1, but it was costly as they lost Anze Kopitar for at least 6 weeks after he broke his ankle. This could not come at a worse time for the Kings, who may find themselves in trouble come playoff time without their best player... Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings suffered a shoulder injury last night, and while it's thought not to be serious, I would imagine they are holding their breath in Motown awaiting news. Joey MacDonald doesn't seem to inspire their fans with confidence heading into the post season... Oh, and remember I said after the 7-0 blowout at the hands of the Bruins that the Montreal Canadiens should coach Jacques Martin before it's too late? The shutout streak is now at 3 straight games. Just sayin...

One of Norway's more prominent black metal acts, they've strayed a bit from the black metal roots of late, but are still putting out some kickass tunes. They were in the news recently when a Norwegian couple revealed their music was the only thing that kept their colicky baby from crying.
