The stats above do not include the Coyotes' game vs the Oilers tonight.
All the good news about the Canucks clinching the Division title was quickly squelched with the news that Manny Malhotra had an eye injury and that it was serious. And so it is the topic of the day, and rightfully so. Money Malhotra could be lost for the season or for several weeks. No one knows for sure. We just hope primarily that he'll keep his vision in that eye. But to be honest, I am hoping he can make it back as soon as possible. Losing Money Mo sucks. His faceoff and defensive prowess is going to be sorely missed. HOWEVER, this is the beauty of an organization with a massive lead on all comers and with all this depth. A window of opportunity is created. And if you're like me, you look at someone like Chris Higgins, who has been impressive so far, to get more minutes and be even more effective. You know, to show us what he's got. Maxim Lapierre can handle a lot more than 4th line minutes as well.
Alain Vigneault said today that he not sure what to do about the hole at 3rd line center yet. Didn't Higgins play center in the past? Only a little it seems. In 2008-09 he took 57 draws in 57 games and won 50.9% of them. That's about as good as it got for him at the dot. Maxim Lapierre is the most natural fit on the current roster for that 3rd line center spot. But then Vigneault had Mason Raymond practicing there on Thursday. Maybe he knows something we don't. Raymond has taken 31 draws this season and only won 35.5% of them.
Aside from the faceoffs, I've seen great checking abilities from both Lapierre and Higgins. I'm not worried about that at all. It's just that another terrific quality about Malhotra was his great leadership on the team. That is hard to replace, even though the Canucks have a lot of leadership in the room. Great guy. Hope he is well.
So..trying to stay positive.
The Coyotes are rolling. The last game they lost was against the Canucks on March 8. They are 3-0 since and look to dispose of Edmonton tonight.
-Is this the first time New Westminister native Kyle Turris gets to play in front of family and friends? I think so.

That’s not what I said.. I was merely refering to Stacie’s powers of predictions, and what happens if they DO come true.
I think the series would probably go differently this year, although I still don’t want any part of Toews the way he’s playing right now.
It’s also imperative that Malhotra comes back, he anchors that third line and lets Kesler play way more offensively.

Love the pics and comments guys… I wish Five for Howling was this lively. I feel the Yotes matchup well against the Nucks when healthy, except against the twins (nobody matches up well against the twins)… They scare me to death every time they are on the ice. I only like the Yotes chances if they stay out of the box, 10 penalties last night… That would be 4 goals against if it were against the Nucks, but luckily they were against the Hell-less Oilers, and were able to squeak out a victory even after playing so poorly.

I just don't get how anyone
thinks their team matches up well against hands down the best team in the league. No on has scored more goals and only the Preds have allowed fewer, and just by 1. In terms of goals for per game and goals against per game we are first in both. 5 on 5 gf/ga we are 2nd best in the league and our PP is 1st and our PK is second. So in other words we are the best team on special teams in the league by far and the second best at 5 on 5. Why would anyone think their team matches up well with that?
Plus we are doing all of this without, arguably, our top 2 D men. Or at least 2 of our top 4. When our D get healthy no one wants to play us in the playoffs. No one.

could be a relative term. Maybe they match up better against us than against another team, though neither might be “positive” matches from the other side.
That is, if you put any stock in the concept of teams “matching up” against each other.
In terms of stats, the Coyotes do not have the greatest line… They are only a +5 on the year, have been outshot, and have struggled on the PP and PK… However, that doesn’t tell you the entire story. In terms of “matching up”, 5-5 I think the Yotes can skate with anyone dues to their depth and chemistry, but when the ice opens up for the opposing team such as in OT and on PPs, I think this is where the Yotes struggle. Open ice is such an advantage to teams with talent like the Sedins and Kesler. The Yotes have a wealth of talent, as each line can contribute on any given night, but they lack the upper tier talent like Vancouver and San Jose. The Coyotes by and large are a product of hustle and their system, not individual talent. They really need to stay out of the box and decide games in regulation. In a generic way of thinking, speed dictates play in OT while systems dictate pace during regulation.

Have you watched the season series? Aside form the blowout loss that we Coyotes fans have long since forgotten, the series is 2-1 in favor of the Nucks, and the other loss came in OT… The two non-blowout games were competitive and could’ve been had by either team. But yes, like I metioned, the Yotes need to stay out of the box to even stand a chance, and no, we do not want to play the Nucks in the playoffs…
OK so where do you match up well?
You have D men that can stop the Sedins? You have a physical team that stays out of the box? Even if the game is played 5 on 5 the Canucks are better. Do you have a dominant shut down line? Do you have a second line that can compete with Kesler 5 on 5? Is your goal tender better? What about the Yotes matches up well with the best team in the league?
The season series part is laughable as well. Take out the blow out and claim the other games could have gone either way. But they didn’t.

but they don’t. I hear this from fans of the Ducks, Flames, Hawks etc etc etc. No team matches up well against us. The Avs game the other day was close. Do the Avs match up well against us? What about the Yotes matches up well against the Canucks? Their PK is one of the worst in the league. Our PP is the best. Their PP is 23rd. Our PK is 2nd. Our goalies have better stats than Brzgalov. I guess I just don’t get why someone would think their team matches up well against us. 2 close games and a blow out in the regular season doesn’t show that they match up well.

again, stats don't give you the whole picture...
looking solely at stats, the Yotes should be no better than a .500 team, but they are not. I like the Yotes chances 5-5, they have 4 solid lines that can contribute. Are they top-tier lines like the Sedin line? No, but that doesn’t mean much. “Match-up” is not a relative term like it would be in a boxing match. I think you are reading way too deep into that phrase. If the Yotes were to win tonight, the season series would be tied. Does that mean I think they are equals in terms of talent? no. This is even the second night of a b2b road game, so I think the chiops are stacked in favor of the Canucks, but that doesn’t mean I am going to throw in the cards. I think Bryz can be a game-changer when he’s on the top of his game, and he’s been really solid in the current winning streak. The Yotes have guys contributing that wouldn’t have even made it in the scouting report last year, so anything can happen…
You still haven't
explained in what way you think the Yotes “match up well” (your term) against the Canucks. The season series has nothing to do with how well a team matches up with another team. What about your D matches up well with our forwards? What does your PP do that matches up well against our PK? What does your PK do that matches up well against our potent PP? Why is Ilya more of a game changer than Luongo who has better stats? Which one of your lines matches up well with the Sedins and why?

come on… I’ll quote stats for you if it makes you feel better. The Yotes held the Sedin’s scoreless in the first game, win. They held them to one point, blowout loss. they “held” them to 6 points, OTL. If you want a reason why I think they matchup well, its because Bryz is a stud, they have 4 solid lines, the defense pairings have finally meshed (Jovo-less, two new additions, one call-up), and Tippett is an excellent coach that has made a less talented team than many, very competitive. In a skills competition, the Canucks win, no contest. I think the Coyotes style of play is what creates issues as far as “matching up”, not player to player. The Canucks have scored one PP goal against the Coyotes this year, and have allowed one themselves, so the body of work over the seson doesn’t translate necessarily to these teams. I think the Yotes can matchup against anyone, while you believe that nobody matches up against the Canucks. Differing opinions, and differing ways of viewing the game. I am done, sorry for stirring up this bag of emotion for you, I was not intending to come here and start an argument, simply wanted to say that I hope its a good, clean, COMPETITIVE game (meaning I hope they match up well against one another).

To the contrary, I actually am praying that the Yotes finish off strong so I do not have to come here at all during the first round of the playoffs:) I’d hate to have a 7 game series (well it would end in 5 or 6) against this team. I think the Yotes are going to be tough for any team come playoff time, especially if Jovo gets healthy enough to play… The D are starting to look comfortable with each other and the addition of Jovo would solidify that spot and be tough for teams to get rolling… Who would you guys like to see matched up against the Nucks come playoff time?

I’m with you, somewhat. We almost always get played tough by the Coyotes, and Bryz can single-handedly keep teams in game all by himself. They’ve got some scoring depth, and are by-and-by fairly consistent.
But, playing LaBarbera tonight doesn’t bode well for you guys.

Sidenote: While I think we’d beat Chicago in a series (any team could win a one-off game), I will wish them a single victory, to be used in a game of my choosing, due to the kindness of the Duty Free guy working the other day who sold me a 200 ml Johnnie Walker Blue Label for $9 (That is a very good price, it goes for $240 at the BCL shake fist at lousy BCL pricing) He was from Chicago, and we got to talking hockey some. He said he’d cheer for the Canucks if (once) the Blackhawks were gone; I will reciprocate in this way.

Agreed. Our 3rd and 4th lines were looking so strong. Better than the top two with momentum changing hard working shifts. Hopefully that keeps going, but Manny was a big part of it. We have depth in all positions, so we will manage… but he will be missed. Hopefully he has super healing powers and comes back soon and with the vengeance of an angry pirate!

I’ve been a big fan of Manny since he’s got here, and I think we are somewhat undervaluing the leadership he brings to the room. The guys have sounded pretty bummed about it, hopefully they can win this one, and many more, for Manny
