We should offer Blasthoff 4.5 mill. If someone offers him 5 mill then let him walk. Ehrhoff’s defense will need to improve though. He’d have to work on that in the offseason.

Edlers only a year younger then Weber. People forget how young he is cause he’s been good for so long. The problem is it’s going to be very difficult to sign Weber unless we can make room for him. Dumping Ballard would be a good place to free up some cap room that isn’t doing much.

Sure he’s only 675, and he’s a great depth guy, but i’d be happy as a pig in shit if we didn’t need him for another game all season, and frankly I like tanev more. Having said that, i’m glad Rome’s here to fill in, but he’s just not that awesome.

Rome makes mistakes, but they all do. Its mainly because of the spotlight where everyone watches his every move, especially since the media speculation about ice time vs. Ballard.
Never said he was perfect. But with people bitching about Ballard not being worth his 4.2, the way Rome gets judged for his 675 is funny.
He is one of the very best bargains in the NHL for what he has given this team.

I hear what you are saying, Rome is a very good depth guy for the Canucks. But that is what he is. He’s already playing at the top of his game and quite honestly, he’s not the best on the team. Have you seen him try to jump in the play?
I don’t think we are bashing Rome so much, but rather we wonder why he seems to get more PP and PK time than Keith Ballard, who has looked so much better this year. It’s not about earning his worth, Rome does that for sure. But he is not the best option in certain circumstances and so we wonder why he is being used over better players. I can understand the limited ice time it if Ballard is playing injured, I can understand if the focus is on mentoring Tanev while he is here. But these ice time issues have existed before the injuries and persist through other roles, like the PK and PP.
So no, it isn’t really about Rome. Yes, he is good value and a great depth guy. But the criticism isn’t about Rome, it’s more about Rome being preferred over better players, when he hasn’t been out performing them.

Rome brings different things than Ballard. I thought it was pretty well established that Ballard has some lingering injury issues he is playing through.
I’m not saying Rome is this amazingly talented guy that should be in the Top 4, etc. Just that he seems to, in some eyes, have earned the same whipping boy status as others have….where every minor mistake is amplified and played back with the “Ballard is better, why is he not there” filter.
To me, we have the #1 team, and part of that is AV knows his team and plays the guys he wants to that get the job done the way he wants.
Not saying anything about the guys’ ability to do that job or not.
And if we were on a 7 game losing instead of winning streak, I might give it more credence….
But really, whether Rome plays a bit more PP and /or PK time, and AV feels that is best…I am going to trust it.
Rome jumps into the play less. Maybe that is part of the point?
I get the question, just don’t agree that it needs to be asked when the team is being so well coached ( by results!).

what your point is in all of this. Would I get rid of Ballard to get Weber? Sure. Is that going to happen? No. Ballard is playing very well of late and I expect next year he will be on one of the top 2 pairs and playing big minutes for this team.

Why assume he’ll be on the top two pairs next year? Especially with all the young talent we have coming up and we’re certainly not gonna get Weber as long as were paying 4.2 mil for our 6th D.

I don't want Edler vs Weber
I love Edler too, but comparing the ppg of Dman who plays for the Predators vs the Canucks isn’t exactly fair and when that Dman leads ALL the preds in points you can start to imagine what he would do with the Canucks talent
But really I want both and without Erhoff, Ballard and Salo we might be able to afford both. Imagine Weber and Edler as our top pair leaving Hamuis and Bieksa as our second pair, maybe Tanev and Sweatt/Alberts/Rome as the third pair?

Ballard will only get better though. His contract is still in the albatross range, but he should play better next year. He had a pretty rough start, and I don’t think that offseason surgery helped

Somehow between now and next season he’s gonna have to do something to change AV’s mind about what kind of player he is because it’s pretty clear what he thinks now.

Ballard may not have been 100% healthy at any point this season and right now is paired with a rookie whose minutes are being sheltered. I think it says a lot about what AV, and of course since AV doesn’t run the D when I say AV I really mean RB, thinks about Ballard that they are using him as the guy who rides shotgun with the rookie. They obviously like his positioning, his reading of the ice, his communication all of the things that a veteran go use to help a rookie make his way in the NHL.

I don't think he will
be mentoring him for that long. In fact I could see Ballard and Edler being the top pair next season with Hamhuis Bieksa as the second pair and some combination of Rome, Alberts, Tanev, Sauve or other random UFA D man pick up as the third pair.

That the Canucks could “decide” who they play in that last game of he year? Depending how things go of course but they might have a chance to knock the Flames out or somehow pick seeding. Personally I hope they knock the flames out in that last game. It would almost be like an extra playoff series where we knock the lames out all in one game.

I’d hope they’d play the same regardless of whether they could… manipulate who they play in the first round or not. It just wouldn’t be honorable to do otherwise.

Personally, I think they’ll be sunk before it gets to that… but it’d be immensely satisfying to strangle their hopes and dreams in the last game!
