Much like a summer blockbuster, the NHL trade deadline seems so exciting in theory. You watch the trailers and think "you know, maybe this won't be a huge cocktease this year." That is until you pony up the $15 bucks at the AMC and realize that - just like last year - your feelings have been crushed under the weight of your own lofty expectations.
Stupid Xbox, trades are so much easier on you.
This is the third Mike Gillis trade deadline and he has only Andrew Alberts to show for his efforts. Maybe find some fourth line help if possible. Maybe a spare part if the right deal comes along. In all likelihood it will be more interesting to see what other Western teams do to prepare for the post season. To all of them I say: please run trade approvals via Dale Tallon. He's friggin' aces.
On the chance a prospect bids us farewell let us say now: "we'll miss making nicknames for you and we apologize for the sudden dark embarkment of your career."

You are much better at the numbers then I am, for sure!
I just think they compliment each other perfectly. Marty is the quiet
leader on that team and for Stamkos to have a mentor like him=
the perfect match. They compliment each other well.
Just like Sid, Stamkos will get better and better and improve different
aspects of his game. Hopefully, when Sid returns, he and Stamkos
will be neck-and-neck in great competition. Probably next season
for Crosby. I just don’t see him coming back anytime soon.

…I will be absolutely and utterly shocked if we trade a d-man that is higher than 12th on our depth chart. Maybe we trade someone like Oberg or Connauton. I cannot see Gillis dealing anything away from his defensive depth unless he is getting a better d-man back. Chances of that happening are nil.

3 Thoughts:
1) Expectation: Konopka or Reasoner to Vancouver. One of the two will be our 4LC by the end of the day.
2) Hope/Dream: Hemsky for Raymond/Hodgson/Oberg. If this was available, I think you have to take it.
3) Wild Hope: E Kane for Raymond/Hodgson/2nd. The thought of E Kane with Kesler makes my heart stop every time.

I would like to win a Cup this year. Hemsky is a bigtime upgrade for L2. We can deal with the farm system later on.

Naaah…gotta agree with Sean. That deal is a no. Take out Hodgson and add a 3rd…and that would be OK.
But adding Hodgson is way too much, and GMMG has already said he is like…almost untouchable.

They can do that then. I, for one, am not as impressed with Hemsky as everyone else. Would welcome him on the team, and he has some talent, but not emptying the gun for him. The guy is in his last year and you have to sign him,

We can agree to disagree then, I guess. Hemsky setting up Kesler and Samuelsson would add a nice dimension to that line. And he’s never played with good linemates before either. I think he could easily put up a PPG the rest of the way, or close to it.
IE – much better than MayRay is going to do.

Even the best teams in the league don’t win the Cup every year. The best strategy is to have a really good team over several years. Otherwise it’s more of a fluke (see Tampa Bay, Carolina, Anaheim).
Gillis is right in patterning the Canucks after Detroit.

That Pittsburgh game was pathetic. Similar to the Rangers loss, they effectively silenced the top two lines and muddied up the neutral zone. Both of those games had zero flow, it was tough to watch

It’s true that he’s been very hot, and that is good to have…but if he slips even a little in SV% – say to the numbers Lu is putting up (.924 which is still damn good) the Bruins go from 2.31 GAA to 2.7 GAA which would put the at a very average 15th.
I know that’s a lot of “what ifs”, but they’re basically relying on Thomas to carry them

has been………..the Red Wings. Every other team that won the President’s has
LOST THE CUP.

although I philosophically agree with you
the odds really aren’t the same no matter where they finish; it’s not a static even playing field, and even the pure team rankings aren’t a static measure. Team A could be in 16th and have the number of Team B who’s in first due to a playing style or some kind of strategy, for example. But yeah, I don’t think the position alters the Canucks chances much this year.

surely the higher your ranking the better your odds purely due to home ice advantage? All other things being equal, home ice advantage is going to give you slightly better odds.

Well obivously the odds
fluctuate depending on how good you are and where you finish and home ice and all of that. But the team that wins the cup is the team that plays the best in the playoffs. And that could be anyone who makes the playoffs. That is all I was saying.

Yeah I’m not crazy about him. I wouldn’t compare him to Raymond at all. He only had 17 points last season. That being said he has 23 points this season so for 4th line duties he’s an upgrade.

He is on a pace that would net him 19
goals over an 82 game season. He has scored 20 goals 3 times in his NHL career. And he is on that pace, where if healthy he would have scored 19 goals, without any PP time. He is sure as fuck better than what we have on the 4th line now. Quite a bit better. And how knows maybe he clicks with Kesler on line 2. Or maybe they put him in front of the net on the PP instead of Kesler who can drop down and help out the second unit while also skating less than 26 minutes a night.

He hits at a reasonable rate
can play anywhere from line 2 through 4 if the needs comes up. Has decent hands and can put the puck in the net. I don’t see the downside.

No downside. I’m not thrilled with either of the trades but they certainly didn’t make the Canucks worse. I think I had a secret hope that they would trade Raymond and i’m a little disappointed. Hopefully Raymond shows me why they kept him come April-June.

Having watched this team play over the last couple weeks
We could really use a player like Alex Edler, and perhaps even a guy like Kevin Bieksa. If we can add players of that sort to our roster prior to the playoffs, I think we’ll be in pretty good shape.

That looks like
a pretty solid 4th line to me. I might say we overpaid a bit if Oberg weren’t redundant in our system. This gives us the kind of insurance up front that we already had on the back end. Apart from our top few forwards, injuries in the playoffs shouldn’t kill us. Another solid day for GMMG. And Gillman. That guy kicks ass.
