Excerpt from Beantown's fan Journal: The Epic Flames Rivalry!

Hey gang! So I don't know if I mentioned this before, but for Christmas 2009 my parents got me this super cool Canucks journal for a gift, and I've been using it ever since to keep a diary of my thoughts on every Canuck Game. And I was thinking, one of my favourite things about being a Canucks fans is all the awesome and tough rivalries we have and how great it is to play against all of our tough, big rivals. Since we just played the Calgary Flames, another Northwest elite team and perhaps our biggest divisional rival of all time, I thought it might be fun to take a stroll down memory lane! Who wants to come with me!? I can only imagine how fun this will be, with all the back-and-forth tough play, there's sure to be plenty of grind-it-out wins and heartbreaking losses, because it's such a big and elite rivalry between two perpetually solid teams! Here it goes...

Excerpts from Beantown’s Canucks Journal

December 27, 2009

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 5-1! SPLENDID! And MayRay had hat-trick! Isn’t that awesome! Haha, and Calgary had to yank their goalie! Still, despite this aberration, it’s always nice to beat our tough, divisional rivals. Can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry!

January 9, 2010

Nice try guys! Well the Flames managed to "win" in a shootout 3-2! Oh well, those shootouts sure are pesky. But that’s the way things go in tight rivalries! lose games that no one really wins except with Bettman points, right? Canucks are sure to get their share of those too! Can’t wait for the next game of such an awesome rivalry!

March 14, 2010

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 3-1! SO COOL! Haha, and Calgary had to yank their goalie after a horrible start! Still, despite this aberration, it’s always nice to beat our tough, divisional rivals. Can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry!

April 10, 2010

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 7-3! THIS ROCKS! Haha, Calgary had to yank their goalie! Still, despite this aberration, it’s always nice to beat our tough, divisional rivals. Can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry!

December 1, 2010

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 7-2! SWEET!!! MayRay had hat-trick! Isn’t that awesome! Apparently it’s his second ever! I wonder when he got his first? Still, despite this aberration, it’s always nice to beat our tough, divisional rivals. Can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry!

January 5, 2011

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 3-1! AMAZING! Aww Luongo lost the shutout with 11 seconds left, still impressive considering all the amazing firepower the Flames have! Get it? Firepower? Flames? Haha! Flames are part of fire so it’s funny! Hahahaha! Anyway, can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry!

January 22, 2011

Nice try guys! The Canucks came back to tie the game with less than 10 min to go in regulation, but the Flames managed to "win" in a shootout 4-3! Oh well, those shootouts sure are pesky. But that’s the way things go in tight rivalries! Close games that no one really wins except with Bettman points, right? Canucks are sure to get their share of those too! Can’t wait for the next game of such an awesome rivalry!

February 12, 2011

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 4-2! SOLIIIIIID!!! Can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry! Oh man it’s great to have tough divisional rivals, must be so exciting for their fans too, huh?

March 12, 2011

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 4-3! KICKASS!!!!! Can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry! Man this rivalry has been so tight forever! Two elite Northwest division teams! So exciting to play our tough, tough rivals!

April 9, 2011

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 3-2! WHAT A COMEBACK! Despite being down 2-0 going into the third period on the road, and despite the fact that the Canucks already had clinched the President’s trophy and had nothing to play for, our boys still managed to pull off the victory! Can’t wait for the rivalry to resume next season!! What a tight rivalry!

November 1, 2011

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 5-1! SO AWESOME! Haha, Calgary had to yank their goalie! Still, despite this aberration, it’s always nice to beat our tough, divisional rivals. Can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry!

December 4, 2011

Yay everyone! The Canucks beat the Flames 5-1! SPLENDID! Haha, Calgary had to yank their goalie! Still, despite this aberration, it’s always nice to beat our tough, divisional rivals. Can’t wait for the next game! What a tight rivalry!

Oh wow… so the Canucks record against the Flames has been 10-0-2 since I started my journal, with Calgary yanking their goalie 5 lopsided times in the 10 losses? Crazy, considering it’s such an even, close, tight, tough, bitter rivalry of Northwest division powerhouse elites! Wow!

they can certainly be compared

but to conclude as a result of the comparison
that they are of comparable ‘badness’ is just analysis with blinders on, imo

they look awfully similar to me.

by Passive Voice on Dec 5, 2011 2:52 PM PST up reply actions

booth is being partially physically ridden by the defender the whole way

you can see how his skate slips out a bit because of the jousting, and the defender is right on his back when he hits the goalie
tootoo, meanwhile, is skating in freely and is merely poke-checked, is not being touched as he head into the ned and he looks up at miller and jumps off his feet

i think booth is clearly a hard-to-net goalie interference incident
while tootoo is far more reckless

the one legit knock on Booth is that the team was up 5-1, no need to be playing so aggressively… but with that issue aside, i can very comfortably say i think Tootoo’s is a worse act.

by Smoboy41 on Dec 5, 2011 3:50 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah I agree completely. Tootoo just skates straight into him on his own free will at top speed. Booth is trying to come to the front of the net in front of the goalie and the defender angles him into Kipper. Booth probably should’ve let up but he doesn’t come in with nearly as much speed as Tootoo. Tootoo loses control of the puck and doesn’t even bother trying to stop to get it.

by marcness52 on Dec 5, 2011 4:53 PM PST up reply actions

the puck goes all the way to the net with Booth.

He could have stopped, and probably the same thing would have happened with the defender piling him into Kipper anyhow.

Ahhhh, the code. Its why I am still wondering how running a guy outside the crease like Looch is not penalized, this one is going to result in a suspension, and the Booth one will just be thought a hardnosed hockey play.

Smo is right. I thought as a fan that he could have let up in a 5-1 game. But you play 60 minutes, and fuck them anyhow, its the Flames. ;-/

Kind of like the Sedins

you think?

Is there two cities that could do that?

If they can keep the stain that is Phx where it is I guess you could put in a 2nd team in T.O ( the Leafs will want to get PAID!) and one in QC…where else? KC has an arena….and there are others that would want a team.

I want healthy teams. The NHL evaluation in Forbes went up specifically because Winnipeg replaced Atlanta. If Phx can fill the house, fine, but they have not shown much propensity for that, you know?

Holy crap!

According to Bob this is the new playoff format:
First two rounds of playoffs are strictly within conference — 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3, winners face each other. Just like old Divisional format.
then;
Four conference winners are seeded on total points, 1 vs 4, 2 vs 3, so an all-East or all-West final is possible.

That’s crazy!

by Canuckelhead on Dec 5, 2011 6:48 PM PST reply actions

cut a couple pre-season games, then add 2 games (theoretically—might end up slightly less in practice) to each playoff round and you basically haven’t lost anything.

that's the way it used to be

back in my day, we used to wear an onion on our belt…. no, wait. anyways, it actually was that way, you played to win the division, then the conference, then the cup. The downfall? There’s always at least one brutally bad team that gets in, and a really good team that gets squeezed out due to numbers. It’s gonna be from our division a lot, I bet…

I also remember the fierce rivalries it created. If people think we have rivals now. Wait until we have to play the same team to get out of our conference for the next 10 years.

by Kent Basky on Dec 5, 2011 7:03 PM PST up reply actions

I totally see the upside to that, and maybe I'm just not a change type person...

But I really don’t know how I feel about potentially seeing LA and Van or Boston and NY in the finals… I really liked the East/West thing. My earliest recollection was two divisions per conference, but it was still the top 8 teams that made it and inter-divisional match ups were possible. Plus, if we only play Detroit and Chicago 2 times each a year that’s a major bummer.

by RogerFenway on Dec 5, 2011 7:05 PM PST up reply actions

instead of four times now?

the trade off Roger, is that you will get to see every team back east in your building once a year.

I do think that maybe having called these 4 groupings divisions and then its top 8 in the conference would have been better, but I get how they want the divisional thing for the first two rounds.

That could have a long term positive affect. Say some team like Florida kicks T.O or Montreal out of the playoffs a couple times. That will sure put a jolt in that market!

I think the NHL

got that one exactly right. Put those two teams with the teams with snowbird fans, and your rinks will be full all the time!

my only regret is that they didn’t fuck with the East Coasters a little bit more. Put a fucking team in Rocinha and make the Flyers go there a couple times a year.

The Florida teams should be put together with Carolina, Anaheim, Dallas, Columbus and Phoenix.

Once that’s done the entire division can be eliminated.

that second west group with Chi, Det, Min could be a tough one.

My guess is Quebec and a second team from Toronto will eventually join the #NHL to equal out the four conferences having 8 teams each

that the plan for phoenix (if they have to move) is not quebec city, but somewhere out west…like seattle maybe.

last time i went to a bar to catch an unknown act in seattle was about 4 years ago…but it was definitely metal bands. Some little hole in the wall right downtown, can’t remember the club name. It was pretty awesome tho.

Exactly

The city just recently coughed up for football and baseball stadiums. Nothing for an arena, hence the Sonics move to OKC.

150 mil for a team and 350 mil for a stadium? not bloody likely.

by Justin Azevedo on Dec 7, 2011 6:31 PM PST up reply actions

I would love this, it means I can actually watch more than one Canucks game a year. And maybe if fans in the Pac Northwest area caught on to hockey I wouldnt have to hear about the Portland Trailblazers like I do now. Seattle LOVES its Sounders…could it do the same with hockey?

Now that's a real goalie controversy.

When the fans don’t know which goalie would best help their team win, since both of them suck. Whereas in Vancouver, we have 2 real good ones.
