Canucks should trade for Hemsky

Hemsky to the Canucks for Sami Salo. Hey one oft-injured forward for one oft-injured defenceman (and defence is what the Oils need) seems like a good trade. Both are power-play specialists. Salo's got that booming shot from the point that would make the Oils second unit a lot more dangerous. For the Canucks, a lot of forwards are going down, Higgins was a great addition but is in and out of the line-up, Booth won't be back for another month. It would help both teams. Canucks could throw in someone like Max Lapierre and get a veteran defenseman from the Oils minor league team to stick in our minor league system.

That’s just about the dumbest thing I’ve heard yet, unless you’re an Oilers fan. Do the Canucks seem to have a problem scoring?? Or in killing penalties? Enough said, except this: You need to keep your day job as a milk hotdog because you’re not going to make it as a sports analyst.

That seems a touch on the unnecessary side.

Absolutely not. We don’t look as good without Sami in the lineup and he’s on a good contract. Good defensemen are too valuable to give up these days, that’s why so many are getting overpaid.

I'm convinced that Salo is retiring in a Canuck uniform.
For the Canucks, a lot of forwards are going down, Higgins was a great addition but is in and out of the line-up, Booth won’t be back for another month.

The only injuries at this time of writing are Higgins (day to day) and Booth (will be back in early-mid Jan, according to schedule). Guys like CoHo, Hansen, Weise, Ebbett, Lapierre are stepping up nicely to fill the middle 6 spots.

Canucks could throw in someone like Max Lapierre and get a veteran defenseman from the Oils minor league team to stick in our minor league system.

No thanks.

And also

Solving minor injury problems by adding an incredibly injury prone guy is not the greatest idea

yeah

Lapierre is not a throw in in any trade, by any stretch of the imagination. The guy is a bottom-6 rock.

Salo might be our best dman

When we lose Salo to injury we all should pray for a short recovery cause he might be our single most important dman. I recently saw a stat showing our win loss record with Salo in the lineup vs out and I don’t remember the specifics but it was overwhelmingly convincing

by Canuckelhead on Dec 30, 2011 7:15 PM PST reply actions

he's so good at all aspects of the game

both Defensively and Offensively.

Totally

And consistent. Hell, he’s even consistent getting injured.

TEAM

recently had a poll of best D’man. The first three callers and DT said Sami, even though ( I think it was Patterson ) seemed nonplussed by it.

He won.

Wow, you guys are so very against this!

@Canuckelhead Salo is at best our 3rd or 4th best D-man. Consider that Bieksa, Hamhuis and Edler are arguably better than he is. Do you remember last year? Salo was out for the first 2/3rds of the season and we played the best hockey of franchise history. We didn’t need Salo then and we don’t need him now.

@cyxj Yeah D-men are valuable but we do have a glut of both centres and d-men, with some very good D-men in the pipeline. Tanev, for example, needs to play more at the NHL level if he’s going to be any use to us in the playoffs.

@Vancitydan So does Salo. If Sami sneezes to hard he’s out 3-4 weeks.

@Semi_Colon Hemsky’s injury-filled days are behind him. He’s all healed up now and it’ll be a couple of years before he will have another season-ending injury.

To all of you against trading Salo away. Look the guy has done some wonderful things for the Canucks, but those days are fading fast. He’s healthy now and his stock price is high, which is the perfect time to sell before the bottom drops out on us. What happens when Salo invariably gets injured which will happen AFTER the trade deadline? We will then have an ok D-man on injured reserve hurting us rather than having an above-average forward in the lineup helping us win the Cup. Think about it.

by Seth Deth on Jan 4, 2012 1:42 PM PST reply actions

The guy

will be a Canuck until he retires.

He took millions less to play here this year. Salo is our best defenseman. The record with and without him is proof ( with him they are many, many games above 500 )

Salo makes Hemsky look like an ironman.

How do you know it will be a couple years? They guys record indicates otherwise.

Lastly, it makes zero sense hockey wise. We don’t need a pass first guy that treats the corners like a no fly zone. And give up a big weapon on the power play? If we want anything, its a bigger forward with some jam, not a guy that makes RNH look like a body builder. Sorry…

You seem to think that Sami will be hurt like its a certainty. You do know this year, except for a few games missed for a strain here or there, that our best defenseman has been in there all the time?

They don’t call Salo ‘the Fragile Finn" because he’s an iron man! He’s bound to get hurt again it’s only a matter of time. People like Sami so it’s no wonder people think he is our best D-man, but you’ve got to look at the facts. The first 55 games of the season last year we played the best hockey in franchise history. Where was Salo when that happened? On IR! So for you to say that we will lose more games than we will win without SS then that is just plain false. Hemsky is young still and entering his prime. When he is on his game, he produces high-light reel goals by the dozen. If he were to become a Canuck it would only be a matter of time before AV got AH’s game together. That is why I say that his injury days are largely behind him. He’s young, entering his prime, and he’s got over the worst injuries of his career. I say it will be years until he will have a serious injury again, because he has learned how to take a hit, how to avoid a hit, and won’t be hit seriously because of his speed.

No

but hey, I am not going to continue calling you wrong when you are.

welcome to your opinion, you know? but the rationalization for a guy that gets injured even more than Sami getting traded here…and giving us a floater that does not go in the corners…just …no.

Thanks for playing though!
