Good things come to those who...
play the Calgary Flames. Well the Vancouver Canucks anyway. The Canucks are 8-0-2 in their last 10 against the Lames, outscoring them 38-20. Total domination. The Flames beat the Oilers 5-3 tonight, even without their stud d-man Mark Giordano in the lineup. Cue newbie Derek Smith, who scored a goal and added an assist against Edmonton. Watch out for him Sunday night.
Calgary is 1-1-0 in back-to-back games this season.
It will be exciting to see Mason Raymond return to the ice, and also interesting to see where he will slot in and if there will be any hesitation in his game. I seriously doubt it. The guy is tough as nails. Will he reclaim his spot on the 2nd line?
For the first time in weeks Roberto Luongo is starting a game! No pressure, Lou. Yeah right. Life under a microscope. And it's a really big microscope right now.

STATS / BRAIN CANDY
- Roberto Luongo is 21-10-2 with a 2,59 GAA, .918 save percentage and 1 shutout vs Calgary.
- Mason Raymond has scored 8 goals and 15 points in 19 career games against the Flames. 2 hat tricks. Killer. Oh hey, both hat tricks came in December. Continue the trend MayRay.
-
Daniel Sedin has a whopping 23 goals and 65 points in 63 games vs Cgy. He's the real Flames killer.
- Henrik Sedin is 11-44-55 in 63 career games.
- Jarome Iginla has 27 goals and 68 points in 81 career games against the Canucks. Imagine that. He has played the equivalent of a full season AGAINST us.
- Tim Jackman......screw Tim Jackman.
- Henrik Karlsson is 0-0-1 career vs Van.
- Alex Tanguay is 18-37-55 in 57 career games against the Canucks.
- Damn it. Covers.com site is down. So much for the wacky insane team stats.

I haven't guessed in a while
since we were on that streak and I didn’t want to jinx it. But screw it, it’s the Flames dammit!

Keslord ftw. Seriously, fuck the flames. Nobody in the NHL I hate more. It’s completely insane how much I hate that team. Even when they’re bottom feeders and suck so hard they could be a porn star, I just can’t pity them. Blame their fans.

I think as a younger Canucks fan I have far more hatred for the Blackhawks than the Flames.
Set your sights to improve...And rest inside the flames.
Same. Dislike the Flames, but it’s Blackhawks as the undisputed #1. I hope they lose every single game for the rest of this season. : )

Well for starters I was born in 1989 lol. I do have vague memories of the 94 finals, as a little dude,. I went to Vancouver that year to visit family and I got my first Linden T-shirt. But how do you think those two losses to the Flames compare in magnitude of back to back losses to the Blackhawks? I get the BC vs Alberta thing. But I mean, in back to back years, that has to count for something! I think my generation of Canuck fans will wish unspeakable evils on the Hawks for a long time. Not to stir the pot on bad memories, but I wouldn’t mind being taken to school either…
Set your sights to improve...And rest inside the flames.
Well, Calgary is in our division, so that keeps the fire going

True, but they dont represent much of a threat now. How big can a rivalry get if you usually handle playing them well? I think right now, especially with the history form the last 3-4 years, the biggest rival is the Hawks. God I hate them (that includes you too Byfluglien). As for someone older than me…well obviously their opinion will differ.
Set your sights to improve...And rest inside the flames.
I agree on the Hawks thing. While I don’t like Calgary, at all (2004 is not that long ago), and their fans can definitely be annoying. I suppose it’s just sort of the direction (LOL) that team has been going in the last few years that makes it tough to truly hate them.
Edmonton definitely has been grinding my gears this year and I think they’ve surpassed Calgary on my shitlist. Combination of Taylor Hall being a baby, Hordichuk/Eager well… existing, and the continuous knob-slobbing from CBC all the time.
San Jose, for a team that I actually liked at one point has sure shot up the “dislike” ranks quickly on account of their overall whiny bitchy attitude.
I dislike the Hawks a lot, including lots of their fans and media, but I respect them at the end of the day and I absolutely LOVE the rivalry that’s developed between the two teams. It’s just fantastic.
As far as I’m concerned though, #1 for me is the Bruins and it’s not really close, at all. Part of that is bitterness, part of that is I just hate everything about them. I don’t feel the need to explain myself further on this.
the rivallry certainly hasn't been all that much lately
when Calgary was a better team early 2000’s the Canucks were abysmal. Now the Canucks being so dominant and the flames are the laughing stock of the NHL.
But as Sean posted, for a lot of us, there were epic battles between the flames and canucks in the 80’s and 90’s. They were probably even more heated than the current Canucks/Hawks rivalry of today, which is also somewhat drummed up by the media “Kesler do you hate Chicago?” “Toews do you hate Vancouver?” “Luongo is Chicago in your head?” “Kane do you think you’ll score a billion or two billion tonight?”
The old rivalry was based on fucking wars on the ice every single game.
<3 Boobies!
notafullcolon CS: Well obviously I meant we were snorting blow off hookers at the time of the goal
Well I'm an 89 as well so I can't really vouch for that.....
But as far as “fucking wars on the ice”, the line brawl a couple years ago, combined with “questionable” hits from Torres, Mitchell, Eager, Ladd, etc… I just think the overall combination of fantastic games, great talent on both sides, an openly expressed hatred, and enough cheap shots and questionable shit make this such a good rivalry.
Food for thought though; imagine playing the Bruins three consecutive years in the playoffs. Just think about that.
When I say battles
I don’t mean stupid line brawls etc… I mean the hockey equivalent of trench warfare. Every last inch you have to fight for. Blowouts weren’t common occurances. Remember last year that 4-3 game we won, where Lu was amazing, the sedins were passionate etc…? And the Hawks never giving up? That’s the sort of game I’m talking about. 60 mins of intensity. Imagine that every. single. game. No quarter asked and none given.
They didn’t run their mouths off the ice, they left it all on the ice. Not saying today isn’t a good rivalry, but you have no idea what those years were like.

yeah all the rules and penalties nowadays make the game wuss. Back then you lost your teeth and played on wrecked legs.

5-2 Nucks, Danny with the GWG.
Let us hope Lui gets it done. How many other players in hockey and other sports consistently require a certain length of time AFTER training camp to get into shape? Whaddup wit dat?
Occupy Vancouver!
you mean?
the entirely increasingly untenable heights we expect of the guy kinda “game shape”?

4-2 Nucks.
Raymond will score in his return — GWG.
5-3 Canucks
Dank ftw. MayRay, Kesler, Salo and AMFB also score.

I was watching the g7 video Sean posted
and Canucklehead will understand what I’m saying here, but the way the Canucks back then battled back after a kind of weak goal on McLean and never gave up is something I just don’t see our team now doing. Back then every player kept going and they were never out. Even when they gave up the lead and went to OT, they just kept battling. Think about SCF G7. The first BOS goal bounces off a skate in an unpredictable manner and in the net. And that’s it. After that, the team just looked shaken and unable to respond, as if they didn’t know what to do if they weren’t winning. They need a very serious attitude adjustment now. The talent level on this team is way over and above what that 1994 team could put out, and yet the 1994 was even closer to a cup.

Even Bure, reputedly the one with no heart
just seemed to give 120% no matter the situation.

Heheh, you’re continually angered hey? Yeah, I wonder about that team’s mindset as well. I think they lost the mental war to Tim Thomas and his horde of defencemen in front of him.

Fuck yeah I'm angered
You know, the goal was a fucking fluke. it happens. Pucks bounce in and even the best goalies can’t know that all the time. So get your heads out of your collective asses and put your heart into the game. Give it 110%. Throw the body. Go to the net. Fight for pucks. Even Lui looked a little rattled. They just sort of threw in the towel after that one goal. It was as if once they realized that they weren’t entitled to the win, they questioned themselves and gave up. Boston was the better team that series and deserved to win. But they weren’t the better team in the grand scheme of things. The Canucks imploded, something that 1994 team was incapable of doing.

Hey Sean
you should post that Video of Iggy leading his team out to shake hands with Linden after his last game. Honestly, I cannot hate Iginla, no matter how hard I try, after he did that. It was pure class. On every level. The Canucks better do the same for him when he retires. The guy may have battled against us and broken our hearts in the past, but I have nothing but respect for a guy who played with the class and heart that Iggy has over all these years.
