Volpatti Done For The Season / Luongo and Salo Updates / More

Aaron Volpatti tore his labrum (shoulder) last game against the Predators and requires surgery. The Canucks page on Twitter is saying he is done for the year. On a related 4th line note: Byron Bitz (hip surgery) skated for the first time today. Mason Raymond was going to bounce Volpatti from the line up anyway I'm sure, even though Voltron scored a his first goal of the season last game. So who's the new 13th forward? Victor Oreskovich? Mike Duco? Obviously The Stanchion would love to see Mark Mancari called up. Lots of options there.

The Canucks' Twitter page also reports that Roberto Luongo and Sami Salo (phew) will play against the Flames on Sunday.

Harrison Mooney at Pass It To Bulis theorizes that Cory Schneider is getting so many starts because the Canucks are showcasing him, and that he gets moved by the trade deadline for a top 4 defenceman. I say this is quite likely, even though Mike Gillis says otherwise. Mooney also thinks it is quite possible that Keith Ballard will not be wearing a Canucks uni by season's end.

Ballards what? a 4.2 million hit a year?

I am surprised he hasn’t been moved yet. He hasn’t done a lot yet, last year he was crap and this year he is sometimes showing a hint of what he could be but I doubt it will go anywhere. He costs too much for what he is.

He's a bigger dissapointment for me than last year

Last year was an injury year. This year, he’s just not going. That being said…

Rome’s “run” has screwed over Ballard a bit. Rome got a bit of luck, and is now a real sweetheart, seeing PP time and top 4 roles etc… But he’s not doing particularly well in those roles. I mean, he’s not awful, he makes the simply plays… but for once, I would like to see Ballard given some PP time to see what he can do. He’s been billed as a guy with offensive instincts but we don’t get a lot of looks…

The offensive looks we do get, he always impresses me. When he’s on the ice with the Sedins, that line looks way better. Ballard has great reads on the play, he’s fairly good at holding the blue line (I think the pinches a lot better than Bieksa) and is a phenomenal passer and skater. He seems to compliment Sedin hockey really, really well, as he can hold the puck in and participate in/maintain the cycle – something Rome really can’t do.

I also did some research a while back, so I would need drance or Cam to look into it more. Ballard’s Corsi, Fenwick etc… numbers are average/not so hot (possible understatement?) but he has a lot of D-Zone starts and even more telling, he has a really good Starting zone/Ending zone ratio (+10%), in fact the best one on the team D. I don’t know if that is at all meaningful, but it seems to me to suggest that he moves the puck forward a lot.

I agree with you.

When I see him with the puck, he doesn’t inspire much confidence (to me anyways). He also makes some risky plays that could hurt the team. Not contributing offensively either with 2 points on the season, yuck.

He’s getting paid like a #2/3 and playing like a #5.

Haha, should’ve been more specific.

I also agree with the Rome ‘run’ and D-zone starts parts.

I don’t think he makes the Sedin line better, compared to the Edler/Salo combo.

I suspected they were showcasing Cory when I heard he was playing against Columbus.

Luongo was allegedly healthy and needs/wants lots of ice time. All the “doing whats best for the team” talk may mean more than we think. If true, seeing him traded is going to be difficult. He may be a better goalie than Luongo in the long run. Really do need another (healthy) Ohlund-type D-man though.

I tend to agree (though losing CS wouldn't cause me to loose faith in the season haha)

for two reasons:
1) Luongo is a goalie who immensely benefits from the odd spell. Part of the problem last year was AV refusing to take charge of the goalie situation. I realise I was quite wrong in some of my assessments about not pulling Lu etc… Some of the spells he got in the playoffs steeled him into some great performances in the playoffs. Had AV realized that early or even late (ie after seeing Lu’s R1G7 performance and R4G5 performance) he could have used that to his advantage (R4G6) to reset Lui for key games. Instead he let things get out of hand. I still think Lui wanting to stay in games where the team quit was a character move for him (My guess is a. he felt responsible and wanted to share the blame with the team and b. not dump CS into awful situation) but AV needed to be stronger and say “Look, I know you want to go down with the ship, but I need to shake things up and get Cory in.”
2) I think Lui feeds of Schneider. With Cory as his backup, Luongo seems a bit more comfortable. He had a career year with the guy and was completely consistent for about 6 months straight. My guess about this is, he and Cory work really well together and get along really well. Having a good guy you work with and trust really helps you focus on your task at hand. Maybe it was the Captaincy thing too, but I think Cory had a great stabilizing effect on Lu, not just for being able to spell him, but as having great chemistry as well.

If he does get move, you gotta think it’s going to be a Godfather type: offer-you-just-can’t-refuse. If it helps the team, I won’t hesitate to move Schneids.

Toots

After watching 4 replays and 2 different camera angles. He is definitely pushed which affects anyone’s skating. Then he jumped to avoid miller, where he could have just plowed through him. Then Miller throws 10-15 punches and gets nothing.. I don’t see Toots getting suspended and if he does its cause "we are nashville."

i only have 2 reasons for supporting the Flames in this game.
1. i have kipper in a fantasy league
2. oilers are annoying this year.

Mark Lee

must be beside himself, with no RNH inspired squealing tonight.

Warm winds blowing, heating blue sky, and a road that goes forever...

by Smoboy41 on Dec 3, 2011 9:38 PM PST reply actions

I love the play

Where Bourque held him off in the slot, got a shot off, and RNH hit the ice.

Lee was wondering why “RNH was dumped with no call”…when he was the one that was a child on a man’s back trying to check him and fell down.

It was ludicrous, but I think I heard a frustrated tear in Mark’s strained voice. Poor guy, watching his young “friend” and not being able to help him, or maybe just give him a hug cuz he looks like he needs one….

The kid's

had a great start, but I think he’s going to wear down as the season goes on. Still a boy playing against men.

by Smoboy41 on Dec 3, 2011 9:48 PM PST up reply actions

Yep

as much as they tried to play up his goal as some great thing, it was a good bounce of the puck and a lousy rebound by the goalie.

Other than that, he was almost invisible tonight, and showed that when teams lean on the kid, he is still a “kid”
