20 Years Ago: Pavel Bure Played His First Game As A Canuck

Canucks.com has a video up of it today. Damn. I am getting old. I was only 17 years old when Pavel Bure played his first game in the NHL. I remember the hype. I remember the show he put on in that first game. I remember so many of his goals and plays. I'll never forget his performance in the 1994 Playoffs, including the "mother of all elbows" on Dallas Stars' Shane Churla. I'll never forget the ugly circumstances under which he left Vancouver either. His number is heading to the rafters one of these days. If you are too young to remember Bure...you missed out on a "rock star". The video below is a pretty sweet tribute by Squire Barnes. Enjoy!

I remember

he was deceptively strong on the puck. While I find the Sedins are more intelligent players with slightly better hands, Pavel was able to blow throw defences and fight off clutching and grabbing which would have totally ruined Henrik and Daniel’s game. He was so fast and so hard to knock off the puck and had such a great shot.

He was a little tank

I remember hearing when i was younger that he had one of the highest bench press on the Canucks, and he was all of 5’10 180 or so around then.

I was not at that first game as so many "were", like donny Taylor always says, "I was there, with a million others"

But I did get to see him against the Calgary Flames. Not in the playoffs, when he slayed them and forever go into the mythos.

Every time he had the puck…in all the hockey seen with others in a crowd, you only see it with the really good players…the quiet and conversations dropped as you watch it.

Collective gaps were pretty commonplace with that guy. I remember him out with Momesso for some reason that game. Probably to protect his little butt.

Not that he needed that. Had a mean streak too.

Russian Rocket's red glare

Amazing player … I would vote him as the greatest Canuck of all time, had his career with the team been longer. (for that reason I put Linden and Smyl ahead of him slightly)

There were faster players in the league such as Mike Gartner … but nobody … NOBODY was faster ‘with the puck’ than Pavel Bure. Or as creative. Not even today … Crosby and Ovechkin are great players, but I’ve never seen the explosive, jaw-dropping moves I’d seen from Bure. He was devastating.

The only player close to Bure’s explosiveness was Bobby Orr, maybe Yvan “The Roadrunner” Cournoyer …

He was, and is

my favorite player of all time. As a kid I hero worshiped him. The Canucks could be down 4-0 in the 3rd and I’d believe that Bure could pull the Canucks through. One year for my birthday ALL I wanted was the same stick Bure used, even though I didn’t play ice hockey. I got 2 of the street hockey equivalent from Bauer (5001?) and I was thrilled. I did his puck to skate to stick goal hundreds of times in the driveway. Naslund had an electric shot, Linden had Vancouver’s heart, the Sedins have chemistry and creativity and Luongo has the fastest glove in the West but, Bure, Bure was the single best player we have ever had and possibly ever will have. I’d do anything to have a player like that again. Can you imagine?

thing is

is there going to be another small guy like that? Kane is small, but he aint close to him in more than one facet of the game.

Perhaps Skinner? The kid has some speed and some moves, we’ll see.

I remember ( I want to say in fall of ‘95 ), at the booths that were there at the time ( maybe still are, the Roxy is not big on renos ), myself, a friend, and two smokin’ female friends were enjoying the evening festivities when a commotion through the door occurred. My Molgilny and Mr Bure walked in and took the booth beside ours.

It was surreal. Molgilny spent the next 15-20 min or so hitting on the ladies and talking hockey with us guys. Excellent guy. Pavel was more…well, he said a few words here and there, but mainly preened and smiled at the inevitable attraction and stir he was creating. Definitely had the superstar vibe going on. Our lady friends ( yes, just friends!) enjoyed the rest of the evening at the next club down the road. Alex was charming enough….

Yes, one of my fave players, not just Canucks, of all time. Retire the #10….or #96 though? ;-/

Kane is a similar player and probably the closest in the league right now

but not as good. He’s a Bure-lite. He’s fast, strong on the puck with a good shot. But he’s not as fast, not as strong on the puck and not as good shot.

Radulov? hehehehehe *ducks when a Nashville fan throws a chair

You DO have a player like that again.

His name is Sedinery and he brings the same special presence to the team as did Bure, who to me was the single best player we’ve ever had. I was at his first game (one of the few games I’ve ever attended live) and his rushes were so special that every fan was on their feet when he flew north and south. We knew that a new era was a-dawnin’.

Yep

That “WE have a superstar now” look at one another when he would do jawdropping moves like it was no big thang.

For a couple years there, the Canucks had about the best player in the NHL, or at least one that would make every top 3.

I agree on the Wonder Twins though. For me, itd hearing the genuine awe in the voices of Higgins and Lappy last year ( and Booth just recently said the same thing)…when they talk about watching them on the power play from the bench.

Always followed by a variation on “I knew they were good, but…damn”. As someone that has mainly been a fan ( even though I will freely admit to screaming “SHOOT” at the TV or in arena on occasion ) of the Sedins from the start, watching them attain these heights is satisfying.

The same awe you hear in the voices of opposing fans now, when they were all about the “Sisters” is nice too.

He’s one of the big reasons I am a Canucks fan. Retire his number, please.

The most

electrifying Canuck ever. His acrimonious departure from Vancouver will probably keep his number from being retired, but I could see him being put in the Ring of Honour.

I'll do it tomorrow, that seems like a pretty good idea to me
What's wrong with tomorrow, I'm watching him but who's watching me?
