Zach Parise a Vancouver Canuck. I have heard that rumor/wish since last year. But the realities of the salary cap always slap us in the face. But with the Devils on the brink of bankruptcy, it could be a possibility. (1% chance is high) Here's how:
At the end of the year, the Devils sign Parise to a multi year deal trade him for Schneider and Hodgson. Of course there would have to be changes to the Canucks bottom half for this to work. The fourth line would be the salary dump line except for center (Malhotra or Lappy). I see maybe Jensen getting a shot with Weise. MayRay is a RFA and could be traded for a draft pick The defense would have to resign Rome and Sulzer to the same amount as this year. And Tanev would have to stick.
I think the question becomes, do we sacrifice a half decent 3rd/4th line we have this year, to make sure our second line is secure? Do we give up on Hodgson? Can we risk losing Schneider? Is Parise worth it?
Will we have to worry about any of this? I still have the sinking feeling that a lockout is coming? Please pat me on the head and tell me everything will be ok. I don't believe you. Teams that are losing money are forced to spend to the cap floor. The Devils, Coyotes and Stars are in financial shambles. I am sure the owners will find a way to say that contracts are again too high and need to be dialed back. And the players response will be that the NHL has had record revenue for 5 straight years. Did you know Brad Richards will make $12 million this year? I think there is something wrong with that. But not as wrong as Ehrhoff making $10 million.
I think I will try and enjoy more hockey this year. Who knows if we will see it next year?
