And Boom Goes the Dynamite (Now with more coaches fired)

This is the only picture I can find of Volpatti being useful. I wanted a picture of Cory Schneider staring at a puck but alas it was not meant to be. (Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images)

As I was typing that, three more NHL coaches were fired. In case you didn't hear, this morning the Capitals fired Bruce "I eat my feelings" Boudreau and the Hurricanes fired Paul "I'll be back" Maurice from their respective head coaching jobs. Who replaced them? Dale "I'll **** you up if you look at me funny" Hunter gets the job in Washington, while Kirk "I have no funny nickname but I'm a really good coach" Muller finally gets his shot at a head coaching job with the Hurricanes.

Oh, there goes two more coaches. I am sure TSN is ecstatic about the latest news, they can always use more panels, with the ultimate dream being a panel that discusses their panels, so let's all wish TSN well in their dreams this holiday season.

Star-divide

And apparently today is "cyber sale" Monday, not "cyber Monday", which means some e-mails I just sent are going to confuse an awful lot of my co-workers.....

Big congrats to the BC Lions for winning the Grey Cup last night, by the way. It's always nice to pretend that a Grey Cup is just as good as a Stanley Cup, and good on the Lions for not choking the game away. When Winnipeg looked to have recovered the onside kick at the end of the game, the only thing that kept me sane was me screaming at the TV pointing my hands yelling "NOT TEN YARDS, NOT TEN YARDS". It's nice to know that no matter what changes in life, BC will always beat Winnipeg.

Anyways, let's see what's been happening around the NHL!

Vancouver Canucks News:

  • Iain Mac Daddy has done a story about the important role assistant coach.....wait, no, that was scratched? Oh we're talking about the goalies again. Yay. Also of note, Edler is still injured. It's about that time of year again, the defenceman starting to drop like flies is right on schedule. [Vancouver Sun]
  • McGinn is a Canuck hunter. This is discussed in a non-whimsical way by someone at NBC. This article is barely worth your time. But you're going to have to read it anyways. [CSN Bay Area]
  • Pavel Bure has an amazing interview where he confirms that I still really don't like him as a person. Things to note: Bure has gotten into Ju-Jitsu (He apparently trains with Oleg Taktarov for any MMA historians out there , he still doesn't really cheer for the Canucks, and he really really hates playing hockey. [Canucks Army]
  • Since we're low on Canucks news, here is a story I did on Chris Higgins on the weekend. [Off the Stanchion]
NHL News and Notes:
  • BAM. Boudreau fired. [The Star]
  • BAM again. Maurice fired. [Globe and Mail]
  • NHL rankings according to the National Post. They have the Bruins tops in the league. Excuse me while I punch my wall repeatedly. [National Post]
  • Montreal is turning on it's own kind! The Montreal Gazette calls for Pacioretty to be suspended. Of course by suspended, they mean a light spanking. [Montreal Gazette]
  • The Toronto Sun talks about how NHL superstars need to play well at both end of the rinks in todays game. Somewhere Markus Naslund is weeping and screaming about this. Why did I pick on Naslund you ask? Because I'll never forget him leaving the puck at center ice on a penalty shot. [Toronto Sun]
  • They now have an all-star game to select the kids who get to go to the all-star game. No longer can you win free tickets, you have to earn it now. [York Region]
  • This article discusses goal differential and shows what the standings would look like based on that. The part about this article that shocked me is that Anaheim is worse than Columbus. Geezus. [Edmonton Journal]

Putin

The propaganda machine surrounding Vladimir Putin is just phenomenal, of course they had to laud his new found hockey skills in the Bure article linked above. Then the players let him score 3 or 4?

by CdP on Nov 28, 2011 9:42 AM PST reply actions

As much as I loved Bure

from the old times, it is frickin’ annoying when I see his aloofness and indifference towards the Canucks. The Canucks helped him to become a hockey superstar, and now he is acting like they don’t even exist. Well, F*** you too, Pavel. If you choose to play this way, I hope you remain a contender for the Hall of Fame, for a very long time.

by AttilaS on Nov 28, 2011 11:34 AM PST up reply actions

You should read up more on the situation and no a lot of the stuff that’s come out recently about it before you jump to the conclusion that it’s all on Bure. From what I’ve read about the way management acted with him, it’s a wonder he stayed as long as he did. It could be false, but teams that are god-awful and irrelevant for 30 years tend to be run poorly from the top down.

by RogerFenway on Nov 28, 2011 1:07 PM PST up reply actions

That may be true

but come on, it’s been almost two decades since he was drafted. Can’t he just be a little generous with his feelings and not hung up on past grudges. After all, the Canucks represent more than one or two people from managment who may have pissed him off. It’s much more to this team than that. It’s 40 years of hockey in Vancouver.

But if the organization really did screw him around financially to the point that's been reported..

I wouldn’t really have anything to do with them. He strikes me as kind of an aloof, disinterested sort of guy to begin with. Shit gets personal, and shit got really personal and nasty in this situation.. So I don’t entirely blame him.

by RogerFenway on Nov 28, 2011 3:10 PM PST up reply actions

For the record...

I figure the truth is somewhere between the two sides. But given what’s happened, I don’t blame him for not being super-nostalgic and twinkly-eyed when talking about his time here. Remember, we only see the on-ice product. We don’t know how these guys interact with each other behind the scenes.

by RogerFenway on Nov 28, 2011 3:13 PM PST up reply actions

I am sure

that the management did something that upset him very much. I have no doubt about that.
My point though, is that no mater what they have done to him, the Canucks of today has different personnel, different management, different owner, different players. Only the name is the same. I don’t mind if he still hates the Griffith family, or Pat Quinn. But Gillis, and Aqillini, and the fans have nothing to do with it. And the fans are still excited when they remember Bure. He should honor that, by being proud of his own career and achievements here in Vancouver. When looking back at his career, he is remembered not a Ranger, and not a Panther, but a Canuck. He should be proud of that and appreciate the great moments, not the bad ones.

Not Overly

surprised by Boudreau being fired. I’m sure he was on thin ice after the play off failures the last couple years. Is it the coaches fault when the goaltending is poor and stars like Semin seem the lack the ability to take it to the next level in the playoffs?

by ktownfan on Nov 28, 2011 10:14 AM PST reply actions

Boudreau got fired because

Ovechkin got tired of playing defense. He played the “system” last year and hated it. No glory in defense. Boudreau wanted players to buy into a ice time reward system and it was too late. Coaches have to start that at the beginning of their tenure not the middle.

Simple math: Ovy quit + Semin quit = Boudreau canned

Finally

the Canucks we all know, have arrived.

We have the injury caroussel going, as some injured players (mostly defensemen) going out and others coming back through the constantly revolving door, and the Canucks just keep winning, because they are not quite within their confort zone (due to a few top players missing all thet time), so they have to work a little harder. And when they work hard, WIN THEY DO. Same old same old, from last year. I’m lovin’ it!

It should only get better now, since we’ve got TWO great goalies, instead of one.

Boudreau

is a great coach, it’s hard to blame him for anything. But this age belongs to the players. The stars are calling the shots, and the coaches are commodities. Is this good or bad, I don’t know.

But I am sure that he will find another good job if he wants to keep going. Good luck big guy!.

Naa,

he practices hard every day.
He will have plenty of chances to get hot again. If Schneider didn’t get “rusty” in the past, why would Lu get that way?

There is also another thing with Lu. We all talk about his mental fragility in the past. When that happened, there was a great pressure on him, because he was the only guy the Canucks really trusted. The pressure may have gotten to him. But now, we got the luxury of two guys. Which means less pressure on Lu. This could be what he needs, to get over the phychological baggage from the past.

It's quite inconsiderate, no doubt.

But in a market like this it’s sort of bound to happen.

From Ryan Miller
“I don’t know for certain what it was. I took a good impact. It definitely felt that way. I had some symptoms in my neck and I had to wait and let that settle down.”

… “I feel good symptom wise. It was more neck and something where I aggravated a disc in my neck pretty good and we had an MRI and CT-scan showing that which kind of backed that up and was the source of a lot of the tension and a lot of the discomfort. It definitely was limiting my range of motion.”

“I talking to the doctors they felt it was important to let it settle down, so we let it settle down. I’m trying to improve some strength in that area, get my endurance and some strength back, and get back to where I need to be.”

So,

Ryan Miller aggravated his neck when Luongo was caught with another woman? What was Ryan doing there? I’d rather not have that question answered.

I think he reefed a game with us in it but it was on the road.

by RogerFenway on Nov 28, 2011 4:25 PM PST up reply actions

Reffed*....

Or Reefed, if we want to start another rumour.

Sources: Stephane Auger may or may not use illegal narcotics. Safe to assume he does.

I guess they don’t hold any refs accountable. If they did Auger would’ve been gone long ago. Not just for the Burrows incident. This guy just can’t ref. Either he doesn’t know the rules of the game or just has a personal vendetta against most hockey players.

Yeah it’s funny seeing an article defending Auger. He’s flat out terrible at what he does. Most people get fired when they’re terrible at their jobs. Not refs. They just get a longer vacation in the summer.
