Stifling defence, opportunistic goals and exceptional goaltending from Mike Smith have the Coyotes
ranked higher in the standings than most people would have thought. They dropped Ilya Bryzgalov, Ed Jovanovski and Vernon Fiddler in the summer and added Smith, Dave Schlemko and Boyd Gordon. Looks unimpressive and like a recipe for failure. Except Gordon has 10 points in 20 games, Smith has been stellar, and Schlemko is a +7 and checking other teams' top lines. More on the Coyotes' early success here.
The Canucks managed 2 goals 5 on 5 and none on the power play in their 3-0 win over the Avalanche. That was backwards from what they have been doing, but also a welcomed change. Ryan Kesler scored an empty net goal to relieve some of the pressure he is putting on himself to score. We'll see if that load is off his shoulders.
