Chicago Wolves Update - Grading the Canucks Prospects through 7 games
What a difference seven days and the addition of two experienced defensemen makes. The Wolves finally notched their first win of the season in a shutout victory on Friday night with Eddie Lack shining in net. Not to be out done, Matt Climie turned away 47 shots at Rockford the following night in a 4-1 Wolves win. The weekend ended on a sour note in Peoria, with a 5-2 loss, but two out of three isnt too bad. I have gone through the roster and graded the Canucks prospects thus far this season.
Victor Oreskovich A When Victor is playing hard he has a physical presence that makes him a player you want to watch on the ice. I hope he stays with Chicago all season, but something tells me if he can consistently be physical and put in full effort, he will be called up to the Canucks in the near future.
Eddie Lack B Recorded a shutout on Friday night, but let 5 get by him on Sunday against Peoria. He cant seem to get a shoot out win, but admits to be working on it in practice. Hopefully we see a bit more consistency from him as the season progresses. (2.33GAA/0.926Save %)
Adam Polasek B One of my favorite d-men on the team. He has a 0 +/- and never seems out of position.
Yann Sauve B Off to a nice start. Hes a solid defenseman and his +1 rating is tied for best on the team.
Bill Sweatt B Sweatt is a pure effort guy who you always feel is just on the cusp of breaking out, he creates a lot of scoring chances and I think hell be in the NHL in the next year or two.
Mark Mancari B Mancari has a great shot from the point (he won the hardest shot contest at the AHL all star game last year.) and is going to contribute a lot to this offense as hes 2-2-4 through 7 games. Grade moved down to B due to his -3 rating.
Matt Climie B Climies first start left a lot to be desired, but he turned away 47 out of 48 shots on Saturday night and set the tone for a much needed second win. (2.51GAA/0.939 Save%)
Kevin Connauton B Kevin has been pretty productive this year (2-2-4 through 7 games)
Mike Duco B Duco is a another pure effort guy, he flies around the ice and never takes a shift off. The points are starting to show up (1-2-3) and I think hell have a nice season if he keeps up the effort.
Darren Archibald C Scored a goal in his first pro game, plays with a nice physical edge, but it hasnt translated to a large number of points (1-0-1) through 7 games
Nolan Baumgartner C Has only played in three games at this point, his positioning and passing was good over the weekend, but hes currently sporting a -2 rating.
Sebatian Erixon D He shows flashes of nice play, but his -4 rating is tied for lowest on the team.
Dustin Friesen D Has one goal through 6 games, but has done nothing to stand out.
Jordan Schroeder D Not a bad start with 1-3-4, but his -4 rating and underwhelming play dont warrant a higher grade. Perhaps Reinprecht, a true NHL center, can act as a mentor for Schroeder this season.
Ryan Parent I Incomplete, only played in one game with 2 SOG.
Anton Rodin I Incomplete, only one game with 2 PIM.
Chris Tanev I - Incomplete, only played in one game (shutout victory on Friday). I am hearing trade rumors sending him to Phoenix, which would be a shame since he did play great on Friday.
Ill be back with an update next week, if youd like to see any more Chicago Wolves news before then, follow me on twitter @Ggooglyboogly.

Sweet!
Is Ggooglyboogly the new man on the farm for the year? Nice to have someone reporting on how the kids do
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
This is twice I have heard
Tanev to Phoenix. For whom would he be trade for?
Now that Sammy is gone, who will tell Sweden to fuck off?
No one. Those rumours need to die

Hopefully the Booth deal will calm the rumor mill for a while. Can’t see any way there would be a deal for roster players now and no way in hell Tanev goes for picks/prospects.

Thanks for the update!
Great to hear about the progress of our prospects. Only question I still have: do Chicago residents have any qualms about cheering for prospects that may one day play for the Canucks against the Blackhawks?

Honestly, some do, people were griping about it when they announced it, but most of the true wolves fans dont. To tell you the truth, vancouver has so far been a lot better us than atlanta and we’re pretty excited about this team

Don't get me started!
There are so many different Wolves fans you need a freakin’ supercomputer to keep track of the allegiances! Old school IHL fans, Thrasher fans, ’Hawk fans who could care less, ’Hawk fans that spit on our arena, you name it.
I don’t think the team will have any issues with it. Minor league hockey lives by group sales and casual fans, and they seem to do just fine keeping the seats full on weekends.
AHL teams are always more accessible for the fans and sometimes it doesn’t matter where your NHL allegiances lie. I’m really excited to hear about the Wolves this season and from the first post it looks like Googlyboogly is just the man to keep us updated!
Sweet, thanks for the update, Ggooglyboogly!
My biggest interests lie in Tanev, Connauton, Mancari, Duco, Sweatt and Sauve.

I'm betting
reports of him crying when he heard about the trade were greatly exaggerated. (read as: made up)

Meanwhile, Alex Ovechkin scores the dramatic winning goal in overtime of the Olympic final, then puts his copy of NHL 11 back on the shelf next to Guitar Hero.
A lady reporter asks him to confirm or deny it.. Sounds like a bit of an odd way to ask someone if they cried about something..
Booth explains that most of his family was down in Florida and he lived with his brother so it was an emotional surprise for him
The whole question is stupid because the whole report was stupid. No shit people cry when they get traded. I can’t believe people read more into it than that

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Not surprised.
It’s just sort of dumb that certain people are questioning the guy’s commitment and desire to win based on some report before he even set foot in Vancity.
yeah

well...YES
in regards to the Canucks, they are so hungry for stories of any little thing that if they thought the public wanted to know about their eating habits, they would be going through their trash tomorrow.

You guys
if no one reported that story and it came out a year later you’d all be pissed that the media didn’t do it’s job and find out that he cried. You can’t have it both ways.

sorry Mike...no
But I am glad its not just me ( you guys! LOL )..There is going to be plenty of coverage regardless, you know? Its the only game in town sort of thing.
I was commenting more on the lower levels they seem to be happily willing to sink to.
The Province “editorial” smacks of the old tabloid days of that paper. Say whatever the fuck you want, and get people talking about you.
They obviously don’t think that people will punish them by not reading or buying the paper!

It's a dying industry
so I am sure they know what they are up against. You make great points about the tabloid aspect of it and the depths they sink to but, I am sorry, reporting that a guy cried when he found out he was traded isn’t even in the same country, let alone ballpark, as the Luongo for LeCavalier debacle. It’s actually newsworthy and interesting. And if at some point he asks to get out of here in the future or signs somewhere else as a free agent because he never settled here or something along those lines then it is meaningful context as well. This isn’t Gaborik bought a house in Vancouver because it actually happened. It isn’t tabloid journalism to report things that actually happened. That’s just journalism. And I think, actually I know but I don’t want to come across as arrogant here, that the disdain on this website for MSM clouds the judgment on issues like this regularly.

I get where you are coming from
I was never comparing the two. I was just saying that if they thought they could sell more papers by going through their garbage, they would send an intern out tomorrow!
I don’t find it arrogant at all. I like some of the stuff out there. Botch is usually pretty good. McIntyre, while I hated, and said so, his “outing” Ryp about mental issues when they were not quite there yet in talking about it, while he did that, I have loved some of his stuff since then.
Hell, I get it. The “crying thing” was a minor story that got lots of pay because of the market.
The editorial though, I agree, and am totally on the Gillis side there.
So, I was just comparing that. The editorial smacked of something that they would have done readily when there were two owners and a real competition between the Sun and Province, once upon a time.
Now, it just smacked of the editor being bitchy because Mike did not shake his hand…

Honestly
I don’t think its that Newsworthy. A young guy cried because he had to leave behind everything he knew and start again. It happens all the time.
But you are right Section, its not tabloid journalism. Its a story about the human aspect of the league, something that is newsworthy.

As we’re all still learning the new players, most of the reactions so far are based on me saying “hey that was an awesome play, what number was that?” checking the roster and seeing the name, right now i just dont remember him doing anything to stand out. Lack should have got an A
He let the 5 in on purpose so the Province wouldn’t suggest replacing Luongo with him.

Could you tell me who the woman is to the right of MacT in the photo? Kidding. Great job, thanks so much. I didn’t think you guys would have someone to fill us in on the farm team and it’s really my only way of keeping track on a regular basis. Thanks.
