If you are complaining about Luongo, have a look at this

Goalies_medium

I know it's a little hard to see, but this is a list of every goalie to ever play a game for the Canucks. It's taken from a Sporcle quiz I did (go give it a try!) and is listed in order of all-time wins (can't believe I forgot Felix Potvin!). Following vancitydan's post about the Vancouver goalie graveyard, there are a lot of mediocre to poor goaltenders on the list and some pathetic statistics:

  • Alex Auld is our 7th winningiest goalie of all-time. With 39 wins.
  • Cory Schneider would already sit tied with Peter Skudra for 19th with 19 wins if this quiz was up to date. That's the same number of wins as Kevin Weekes, Sean Burke, Johan Hedberg, and Jason Labarbera had combined for the Canucks. Some of those goalies were acquired to be our starter.
  • Mika Noronen was once considered to have a future with this organization.

Oh yeah, nestled right near the top is our much maligned starting goalie Roberto Luongo. With 154, now 194, wins. He will almost certainly move into the #1 spot this season ahead of Canucks legend Kirk Mclean. He is far and away the best goaltender the Canucks have ever had. And we should take a minute to remember that and be grateful every once in a while

When you look at this list, you realize how lucky the Canucks are to finally have some stability between the pipes. Yes, Luongo is prone to some spotty play. But if you watch this team game in and game out, like many do here on this blog, you recognize how many brilliant stops he makes and how much of a difference maker he is for this team.

We are lucky to have Luongo. Let's hope this year he proves that to the rest of Canucks Nation and shuts the hater up.

he needs to win a cup

I hate to say it but as long as Luongo is minus a SC ring he’ll always have his detractors. In fact if he won the vezina this year critics might say Tim Thomas got sick or Jimmy Howard was robbed. I disagree

Luongo is the best goalie we have ever had

and losing in Game 7 is the best Stanley Cup Run we’ve ever had. Doesn’t mean I should be satisfied with either. Yeah this city has had bad goalies. And having one that isn’t bad is really great. But I mean I can make a great Steak at home. I still go to the Keg sometimes for an even better Steak. Know what I mean?

Yeah I gotcha. I’m not saying never complain, it’s natural for fans to get frustrated. But it needs to be rational. I feel like at this point a lot of people are just waiting for Luongo to screw up so they can jump on him or undercutting him because of his relative lack of playoff success (though he’s accomplished more there than say Miller or Lundqvist, two of the best in the league IMO). He could get 5 SOs in a row and still get criticized because he “hasn’t proved anything yet”. I just think we should recognize how good a goalie we have and appreciate it once and a while. I know, having been a fan since the days of Steve Weeks (yes, Steve) and Troy Gamble as backups and every other goalie since, that we may not have as a good netminder as we do now for a long, long time.

Different fans have different breaking points

I get frustrated after one back goal and want to throw my controller through the TV pretty much every time Luongo lets in ANY goal. So I can only imagine how frustrated I would have been if I had shelled out money to see that Rangers game. Some fans are over Luongo and his sometimes erratic performances. A day will come when you are as well I am sure. It happens with every player. And I swear to god if he makes one more save where he ends up face down on his stomach while the rebound goes in I am going to absolutely go ape shit. How are you supposed to make a second save if you are on your effing belly? Every goalie I have talked to says the same thing. No one can figure out why he does it.

I think the falling forward is a weight issue

I don’t mean he is fat, I mean that his transfer across the crease has his weight moving over his feet instead of backwards. A lot of goalies end up on their butt when they push off from one side to the other, but not Luongo. Lu wants to grab the rebound with his glove instead of just creating that barrier infront of the net and letting the puck hit him. It will be hard to stop that instinct.

I’m sympathetic to what you are saying and I also agree that just because he’s the best we’ve ever had is somewhat irrelevant to the argument.

My grind with the Luongo hate isn’t people like you or Shifty who sometimes pull their hair out because Luongo is practicing his belly flops when he should be playing hockey – I really do get that- , but with how a lot of the Luongo hate takes on a really nasty tone and is based not on rational arguments, but on some goals he surrenders because the entire team has stopped playing long before he has, snowballing an amazing amount of hate in the fanbase.

You are right, he hasn’t won us a cup. But he is one of only three goalies who has taken us to the finals, one of two who has made it to game 7 and the only one to have posted multiple shutouts there. He’s given us the best chance to get a cup and proven he can do it. He’s shown us he can improve his game and work on problems.

What I am saying, is that he’s earned a bit of trust and faith from us. Sure, he has awful octobers. Yes, he lets in some real head scratchers, and yes, sometimes I want to go apeshit when I watch him shit out of his ears. I know this sounds shocking, but he has flaws in his game and I accept that. Part of my frustration is based on the fact that a lot of fans DON’T accept this (or don’t accept that he does). But all goalies do have flaws. Tim Thomas has some flaws in his game too, but fans in Boston embraced Thomas and all his warts, even when he hadn’t won a cup.
Thomas could have looked equally silly if the Sedins had actually played their game and not AVs maddening “safe” game. Part of the reason we lost there was Boston exploited Lui’s weaknesses while the Canucks failed to do the same with Thomas.

I just think that at times like this, when the season is young and he hasn’t seen all that much action in the pre season, he’s earned the right to be cut a little slack and that fans need to have some faith in the poor guy. He’s done a lot for this team and has shown he has the ability to do a lot more. It wouldn’t hurt to get behind the guy a bit.

To each their own though.

Every goalie I have talked to says the same thing. No one can figure out why he does it.

Same here. Talked to goalies and they don’t get it. I just talked to a guy who said he’s making a desperation save then going off balance. He also has to work on his rebound control.

I have a theory on that

after watching a bunch of guys play recently, and taking notes.

Its timing. He is getting across and making that save, but when he is locked in, he is thinking the game better. He does this every year I swear, but people have somehow made this a new “thing”.

Fine. He gets across, as do they all. The ones that are up a little longer are in a sense lunging at the shooter. They’ll be in the same place as Luongo a second later.

Its partly in the way he comes across, and partly because for a 6’3" guy, he has long legs. But mainly, it is not anything more than rusty timing. Like everyone else on this team, he will get locked in, and they will go on the same as in years past.

Once he is locked in, it helps them get locked in. When they all have swagger a top goalie brings.

In closing, we are just noticing this more this year. Its because he is struggling with his timing. Once he has that, I expect he goes right back to the same style he has in the past, being up longer.

Sometimes, the shooter holds onto the puck a couple seconds longer. Its what the Twins do a lot, for instance. Kane is great at it. That can make a goalie look foolish too. But I have seen the same “falling forward” from everyone from Fleury, to Ward, to of course Thomas. Pavelec was there when Kessel beat him just last night.

The rebounds will come from the timing too Sean. Like how Lundqvist smothered them last game. That is a hallmark of Lui’s game when he is on.
