"Vancouver was not a destination point for really high-level free agents for a variety of reasons. Anywhere from taxes to rain to travel, you name it," he said.
"I felt if we were going to be a competitive team and organization, we had to change that mindset. We did it by approving a plan that was in place to redo the dressing room facility.
"We did it by initially offering more money to certain players we felt would legitimize our team in the short-term for others, one of them being Mats Sundin -- he made a significant difference in our organization -- and we tried to provide a guarantee we were going to make players better by every means possible."

Although, I don’t think Gillis gets enough credit for some of the off-ice things he’s committed to.
European scouting, AHL depth, physios/sleep doctors/psychlogists and other professionals are stories we don’t hear about that often, but it might mean the difference of 3 or 4 points by the end of the season, and given how close the teams in the Western conference are, that might be the difference of the 3rd seed and the 5th seed.

Got the call to the big leagues!
Better than Simmons. In the same paper, basically saying Gillis is much like Bowman Jr, coming in at the last minute to get the glory.
This article acknowledges that, but also acknowledges the thing Gillis has done.
Good read

Agreed
Gillis has really caught on to the off-ice moves that can contribute to a team’s success.

Excellent article
I was also shocked to see that Samuelsson was the only skater over 30. Admittedly, the Sedins ARE 30, but I thought that was an interesting and encouraging comment to see. This team shouldn’t completely fall apart after the next season or two.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
Yeah, I was actually surprised by that too. I thought we had a couple over 30, but I guess I was including the Sedins in that number. It is good for the future – the majority of the core guys are right around their prime now, so there should be a couple good years ahead before we have to start raiding our “bare cupboards”

Amusingly, most of the “bare cupboards” comments come out of the Toronto media. I guess they know what it’s like to have “bare cupboards”.
That was an awesome writeup on your road trip, btw. If you are ever interested in going to a game in Detroit or (maybe later this spring…Pittsburgh or Philadelphia), let me know…I’d definitely be up for carpooling, etc. That goes for anyone in the Ontario area that wants to do a Canucks roadtrip.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
I was going to suggest that the Eastern contingent should go to a game in Detroit or somewhere close. There is that last game against them in March, I think. Or the playoffs if we meet them

March 23
I’d definitely be up for it. And I’d definitely be up for a playoff game as well.
I’ve already told my wife that if we make it deep into the playoffs and are playing a team in our time zone, I’m going to try to go. She countered with a trip with her cousin to Chicago for March Break, and we were able to come to a happy arrangement. Have to cram in as many of these sort of activities as I can before my future Canuck fan is born in July.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
Congratulations, Jevant.

Sorry but just because
Gillis says it doesn’t mean it’s a fact. It’s his opinion. Maybe his clients and some of his friends clients didn’t want to come to Vancouver. That doesn’t mean no high level free agents wanted to come here. And just cause he says signing Sundin helped change that doesn’t make it true either.

I can’t argue with that. I guess since we never signed a big name guy it means none would come here. There’s probably no other reasons for it.

Perhaps that's true
But I am not so sure we ever really tried to get any that we didn’t get. Maybe I am wrong. On the other hand high priced free agents rarely pay off.

I think it was just before we signed Messier in 97(?). There was a meeting in Seattle or something.
I sort of thought at the time he was just using the Canucks to get a better deal down south, where ALL the big money endorsement dollars were rolling in …but there are some that still think we had a real shot at getting him instead of Mess’, but somehow screwed it up…

Oh, as for Cup win…he almost made the Conference Finals with the Blues, and then had shitty luck with the Rangers instead…
But hey, he was Wayne Freaking Gretzsky… you know we would have won at least 2 Cups.

Well maybe I missed it
but I don’t remember Gretzky ever being a real possibility. There were reports that he wanted to play with Bure and I do remember something about a meeting in Seattle. But I don’t remember a contract ever being offered and rejected.
