I would pick Hank first if I were an All Star captain

I imagine by now that most of you are familiar with this year's novel All Star format.  The fans picked five "starters" in a ridiculously stupid vote, and then the NHL filled in the rest of the spots to leave 42 players selected in total -- enough for two teams.  But the kicker is that those 42 players will elect two captains, and each captain will then have a schoolyard type draft where they alternate picks from the other 40 players to pick their teams.

So if you were selected as captain, and you got to pick first, who would you pick?  Whether Crosby and Ovechkin are both captains, which is what I'm guessing was the design and I'm guessing a lot of people presume will be the case, or whether the players might select veteran leaders instead out of respect  (Lidstrom likely and perhaps Iginla?) my strategy would be the same.

Pick Hank first.

Here's why:

1. The Sedins are a more valuable pair to have than any other pair available.  The only way to guarantee that your team is the only team that can have both of them is by picking a Sedin first.

2. The other side will then either have the choice of picking Daniel with the second pick, in order to prevent you from getting both, or choosing someone else, in which case you pick Daniel with your second pick and you get to have both.

3. If the other side picks Daniel, well then you've not lost out at all because you still have your pick of everyone else you could have picked instead of Hank with your first pick.  And I think Hank without Dank, being the better setup man, is more valuable than Dank without Hank... at least there's evidence he can put up numbers as a solo act, which remains an open question when it comes to Dank.

4, If the other side lets you have both Hank and Dank THEN FUCK YEAH YOU OWN.

Nice Bean.

I’m hoping that they end up on different teams just to see what happens. I say they force them both to be on the ice at the same time so that they can intercept each others’ passes all the time

OK first of all

If the captains aren’t Crosby or Ovechkin then those guys will go with the first picks. Stamkos as well will probably go before the Sedins if he is not a captain. If I was Ovie or Stamkos or Crosby and I was picking I would take Hank so he could set me up but there are other very good set up men available if you miss on Hank. Like Brad Richards. So I don’t think the desire to get a set up guy is higher than the desire to get a game changing sniper.

And I am pretty sure they won’t care if they get both Sedins or one or none. I doubt Crosby is worried about losing the All Star game because he didn’t get the Twins.

To be honest

I would maybe take Kesler before a Twin. An elite shut down center who can score and has amazing wheels? Could play well in an All Star game if you actually want to try and play hard and win.

And let’s not over value our own players. The Sedins are great and top 5-10 players in the league. But they aren’t Crosby, Ovechkin or Stamkos.

If it was just for the next three seasons I would rather have Henrick then Ovechkin. Saying a player who won the Heart and Art Ross a season ago and leads the NHL in assists by 11 might only be the 10th best player in the league seems like undervaluing a bit.

Just for a season? You think it's that crazy?

I’m not saying everyone would or should, but who won the Heart last year? Who has more points this year? Sometimes we have a tendency to take our own players for granted, especially players as understated as the Sedins. I like how Hank makes the players around him better I don’t know that Ovechkin does that to the same degree. Now long term I take Ovechkin in a heart beat but short term I don’t know how you can argue that Ovechkin is any better then Hank. The stats and trophies don’t support the argument.

by Canuckelhead on Jan 13, 2011 5:21 PM PST up reply actions

Well let's not get into the whole Henrik Hart thing

Ovie was better last year. 109 points in 72 games. You think Hank makes his twin brother better? Ovie is just as good at making his line mates better. Arguably better at it considering he doesn’t have a twin brother on his line that he has played with all his life. Ovie is having an off year but that still doesn’t change the fact that he is the best or second best player in the world. And he is only a two week hot streak from getting right back on track. The stats and trophies do support the fact that Ovie is a better player. Right now this very minute Hank is probably playing better but that doesn’t mean he is the better player.

Yeah but how many

of the other top 5 or 6 players in the league play with another guy who is in that category???

Put Ovie with Stamkos and let them play together for 20 years and I bet they would be pretty good. In fact I think you could argue that St Louis and Stamkos are right there. They have the same number of points combined as the Twins and they don’t have the benefit of being freaks!!

You're right, obviously Ovie is a great player and transcendent talent

I don’t think anyone is disputing that at all. I’m certainly not, and in the long term Ovechkin is certainly a better pick if you’re drafting a team. All I was saying was, if we’re talking about this year or even a couple years from now it’s difficult to say Ovechkin is without a doubt a better player. The reigning Heart trophy winner who currently leads the league in assists has to be in the conversation at least. Sometimes when we’re so close to a player we lose sight of how good they really are.

by Canuckelhead on Jan 14, 2011 9:41 AM PST up reply actions

I’m not sure I agree… For one single game (no cap space) and stonge linemates, maybe Ovie shines.

But if you’re building a team in the cap world, the Sedins allow for better linemates with their cap-hit

by SteveNux on Jan 18, 2011 12:04 PM PST up reply actions

Last year I’d agree with you but this year I’d take Henrik over Ovechkin. Ovie is still really good but he’s definitely having an off year.

In the scenario you described Hank is a captain which means if healthy 2 of Stamkos, Crosby and Ovechkin won’t be a captain. And you think the other captain will take Daniel Sedin first?? I realize they are great players but that’s ludicrous.

Let me ask you...

If you had the choice of picking Crosby/Stamkos/Ovechkin first and possibly another one of them second vs not having to face TWO sedins and only getting one of the other two (or all three; in the wierd situation where neither crosby nor ovy is a captain), would u not rather have one less superstar and the knowledge that you’re not going to face the most feared duo in the league? I guess in the end it comes down to how serious you are about winning the game vs keeping dank and hank happy, and it is the all star game after all.

This choice wouldn’t be about having the best players, it would be about creating the better team. Frankly, I can’t see Sid and Ovy (or any two random superstars besides the sedins and st. louis/stamkos) playing all that well together for a one game shot.

Um if I was Stamkos, say

I wouldn’t give two shits about if the Sedins play together or not. Whether on my team or not. And I wouldn’t be putting much thought into building a winner. It’s the All Star game. I would be picking the guys I most want to play with. Maybe Stamkos has the center ice package and stays up late to watch the Canucks so he can watch the Sedins cycle. But I doubt it.

I noticed you sporting your grumpy pants

I agree though. It’s an All-Star game and if it were “Build the Best Team” for a cup run then you’d probably work on formulating a gameplan to land both Sedins or most likely take a guy like Lidstrom or Doughty but in the spirit of an All-Star game the Malkins, Ovechkins and Crosby’s will probably go ahead of the Sedins. And really, who are we kidding, I’m taking Yandle, Enstrom 1-2 in any draft haha.
