Canucks 4 Islanders 3 In A Shootout

Thanks, KesLord!

I don't care how they win one. I really thought the Canucks would open a can of whoop ass in the 3rd period but they did not. I thought they were just toying with the Islanders. Nope. The Islanders played a decent game behind a stellar effort from rookie goaltender Kevin Poulin. But despite a colossal 51-41 shot advantage in Vancouver's favor this happened:

MayRay you DOG!!! Hey Isles you may bow to Robbie Schremp's shootout skills but Raymond f*cked your shit up didn't he?

Call it a dumbed-down effort against the Islanders or not it was a win. Vancouver now holds a 3 point lead for the Western Conference over the Red Wings. I don't care how

Star-divide

the wins happen anymore. We got 2 points and that is the bottom line.

And I just want to include this:

Tanner Glass can take a lot of punches.....but he also can dish them out apparently:

Woo!

Just a vague perception, but Jeff Tambellini has cooled off to the point where he is no longer a fixture on the Canucks' 2nd line. Need some proof? Well here ya go:

Put Tamby on the 4th with Volpatti again. Bolduc sits. Beaker up. AV went to ol dependable 36 late with Kes and Mase any how. But Tamby is playing well enough, just not scoring at the same pace. Let him go make that 4th line go with the two Ivy Leaguers.

AV put it best. Thats the 2 best teams in the last 10 games playing and it was a hard game.

Win’s a win. Look for the above change versus the Rags though. Truculence needed there vs a Torts team. Like to see the hometown boy versus MegaDouche as well.

That is good, isn’t it?

We’ve just been playing like that a bit…longer. Isles started just 10 games ago!

Apparently Poulin wasn’t too happy about MayRay’s move in the SO. Anything to make a shootout more interesting is fine by me, plus if it helps you score why not do it?

I think its only showing off if Raymond would have scored anyway with a more “standard” attempt. If the goalie is saying he couldn’t have stopped said standard attempt, fine. Otherwise, Raymond just did what he needed to to score.

With style.

Lots of Islanders were complaining about the referees. Seeing as how Auger was one of them, I wouldn’t be surprised about bad reffing. Anyone have thoughts on that? I’m especially interested in that Torres hit on Grabner in the first, but I can’t find a video.

As for the shoot out. Well, we lost one against the Red Wings and complained about it. The sting is less when we win, but I still don’t care for it.

Catching up on last night's action now...

I surrender – so it’s not OK for Omark to get fancy against a hapless Ellis in a shootout (rookie v. vet) and now Raymond can’t get fancy against rookie Poulin (vet v rookie)? Why is trickery frowned on in these situations?

by Yankee Canuck on Jan 12, 2011 8:11 AM PST reply actions

At least Raymond’s move was constructive towards the eventual goal.

Omark just spun around while he was skating towards Ellis, and his move served no purpose on the eventual goal. If anyone has a problem with these moves, it should be that.

I loved what Ray and some other guys said. If Ellis was confused by the spin-o-rama like 40ft from the goal, then he really isn’t qualified to be a NHL goalie anyways.

Some people were saying Omark’s move altered his speed, which would’ve messed with how fast the goalie backs up. Not that I’m a goalie or shoot out specialist, but it makes sense. Sort of like what Kesler did to slow down so much, but with added flair.

I think it’s because the rules are not very clear in this situation (who would have thought??). The rules say you aren’t supposed to stop your forward progress in a shootout/penalty shot, yet there is an exception for a full 360 degree spin, but sometimes people do it too slow…it’s a pretty big clusterfack, but then again so is the entire shootout

Right

We heard that last time Raymond (I think it was him anyway) did the spinorama. Saying Raymond is a show off may be true, but it’s clearly his right if the NHL hasn’t bothered to change the rule. Go bitch to the league and water the damn thing down to where everyone has to take a Hudler slapshot if that’ll keep delicate egos in check (and VAN would still lose too…ugh). Besides if he screwed it up he could have cost Vancouver a point; it’s not fool-proof.

His real anger should be at Tavares because his SO shot sucked.

LOL
because i hate shootouts and afford them little value i’m not going to spend the effort looking up this rule,

I had to crack up at this because it’s exactly how I feel, even on the other end of last night’s rooting interests. I don’t care what the players do in the shootout (as long as they don’t bullrush the goalie — that “move” is straight B.S.) — the whole premise of using it to “decide” games is ridiculous to me. So players might as well try whatever trick they can to get a goal.

The NHL has invited this. If the circus moves and “hockey isn’t actually like this, but ooh, look a bird!” moves are what gets the NHL on Sportscenter (U.S.), the NHL deserves the lowest-common-denominator attention that will follow.

Halifax here

I didn’t see the game. Why were shots so high? Did the nucks just suck last night allowing 40+ SOG?

And how did we manage to allow them to get three goals in, with two in the third?

by Sareon on Jan 12, 2011 9:21 AM PST reply actions

It was,

because the Isles played their hearts out, dominating the Canucks in the second and most of the third. The Canucks (reluctantly) had to keep up with them.
Vancouver had a good first period (lots of shots), and a great overtime, but they pretty much sucked in-between. They looked like they were trying to win without putting in the effort, and it almost backfired.

But I don’t want to complain, they’ve earned the occasional stinker, in my book. And they are still winning, while giving 50%.

Yeah, as long as they can flip the switch to 100% when they need to. Like they did in the last minute of regulation and the OT.

Yes, that’s the key, to step up when they need to.

And it looks like they did it yesterday. No matter how much their game sucked, as soon as the Islanders scored a goal, you could see the Canucks surging and coming right back. It was quite interesting to see the radical change. And the overtime was the best example, it looked like a long Canucks power play, 4 minutes out of 5. Raymond missed a gaping net in the last minute.
