THN 2010-11 Ultimate Fantasy Pool Guide
I went to Chapters today and took a look at THN's fantasy pool guide. Some observations:
- Darcy Hordichuk was on the depth's chart third line with Manny Malhotra and Jordan Schroeder. The fourth line was Cody Hodgson centering Tanner Glass and Jannik Hansen.
- Roberto Luongo is predicted to have a league-high 44 wins to go with 6 shutouts, a 2.37 GAA and a .920 save percentage. Jimmy Howard and Mike Brodeur (just kidding) are tied for second with 41 wins.
And point predictions...
- Henrik Sedin: 25-65-90 in 82 GP
- Daniel Sedin: 34-55-89 in 81 GP
- Alexandre Burrows: 30-30-60 in 80 GP (does not take into account current injury)
- Ryan Kesler: 25-34-59 in 82 GP
- Mikael Samuelsson: 28-29-57 in 79 GP
- Mason Raymond: 25-25-50 in 78 GP
- Alexander Edler: 8-35-43 in 80 GP
- Cody Hodgson: 17-21-38 in 72 GP
- Raffi Torres: 17-18-35 in 70 GP
- Manny Malhotra: 11-21-32 in 77 GP
- Kevin Bieksa 8-24-32 in 75 GP
- Keith Ballard 7-25-32 in 82 GP
- Jannik Hansen 12-19-31 in 75 GP
- Dan Hamhuis 7-22-29 in 80 GP
- Sami Salo 10-18-28 in 65 GP (again not taking into account current injury)

Yeah I just got that today …… (not that I need it for the upcoming NM pool)…….. haha, anyways, I find some of the rankings off, like Kesler. And the depth chart is laughable.
Sami Salo 10-18-28 in 65 GP (again not taking into account current injury)
Yet they still knock off 17 games. Haha. Typical Salo.
Darcy Hordichuk was on the depth’s chart third line with Manny Malhotra and Jordan Schroeder.
You take that back right now!
Hordi on the Canucks roster is vomit-inducing.

Seriously,
What are those guys smoking? While I would love Lou to rebound with that great a season, I’ll have to see it to believe it. I doubt he would get enough starts to get 44 wins, unless somehow they win over 50, which would be pretty swell.
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
I do not think that 50 wins is an unreasonable goal for this year.
In fact, I think that should be the target. I assume it is.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
Still, assuming they are going to start Schneider a fair amount, I don’t see Lou getting to 44 wins.
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Fair enough. I actually hope Lu doesn’t start enough to get there.
I suppose I was surprised at your use of “somehow they win over 50”. I think that is a very reasonable and attainable goal for the year.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
I like to be cautiously optimistic.
And I guess 54-55 would be more in the range of wins needed for Lou to get 44 and Schneider to get a good number of starts (seeing how Raycroft got 9 last year in 14 starts, and I imagine they’d be looking to start Cory a bit more)
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
You don’t think he’ll start 55 games? I think he’ll hit that pretty easily, barring injury. Schneider getting 20-25 starts would be typical rookie & veteran numbers. Next year that could change, but I think Lou hits the high 50’s this season.
44-10 is 54 starts. That leaves 28 games for Cory, and that sounds about right for me. This way, Roberto gets two-thirds of the starts.
I believe our fearless leader was prognosticating 20-25 starts for Cory.
I won’t say 44, but I would make book on 40. Lui is too proud, and too talented to not come back with his best.
They say they don’t read the papers and whatnot…
But I imagine everyone else in the family does….you cannot totally hide from it.
Can you imagine 44-10? That sounds like a Vezina season right there.

If he comes back with a 44-10 everyone who ever said anything bad must wash their mouth out with soap. But that seems quite optimistic

40 and 14?
Are you guys out of your minds? His best ever win percentage was .626 and you think this year he will get to a win percentage of roughly .741?? If he plays 54 games and matches his career high win percentage he will get 34 wins.
I would predict something more like he is going to get roughly 60 starts and win 37-40 of them.

This is line with my thinking
There’s no way he goes 40 and 14. That’s pretty unrealistic. 37-40 sounds very reasonable as a starting point.
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Oh, dear.
That looks like he’s going to start 77 games and not do very well… Who is he, latter-day Grant Fuhr?
?
How would that imply he’s going to start 77 games? I was working under the impression that Schneider was going to start at least 20
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

Jeeze, can you tell this thing gets written way before it’s published?
Luongo could pick up 44 wins this season, but he’d have to have one brilliant year to do it! I could see Schneider with anywhere from 20 to 35 games, depending on how well he starts. Hope he does well enough to let the team sit Lou for at least 10 games in March/April. On the other hand, there’s only one back to back in both of those months, so that’s nice to see, too!
Scheider will hopefully get 30 starts
Like it or not, Lou hasn’t been that great near the end of the year lately, which is a shame because when he’s on he’s one of the best. Plus if Schneider is as good as advertised why wouldn’t you play him? At this stage in his career you risk him never developing further. He’ll be behind 1-6 one of the best D’s in the league ( Bieksa as a number 5? Jeez) and he’s got a few years of pro behind him now.
You pretty much have to play him, and wether Lou likes it or not, he needs some games off. History seems to be prooving that.
I refuse to have a sigline included with each of my posts. You can't make me!
Everyone keeps saying
the Leafs have the best 1-6 defense. I call bullshit.

Not exactly the best, but damn close.
A top six of Phaneuf, Schenn, Komisarek, Kaberle, Beauchemin, and Gunnarsson. Throw in Exelby and Lebda, and… OH make Gunnarsson the seventh defenceman, because I forgot about their superstar Dman, Jeff Finger!!!
That is a pretty good D corp
if you don’t mind your top 3 D men being bad at actually playing defense. They should have a decent PP though.

I’ve been getting it from some Leafs fan who think their D is better than the Canucks’.
Poutine & Meatballs
I don't mind the leafs D
Some pretty good parts, and certainly not a stinker in the bunch.
Mind you those pretty breakout passes to the 11 third liners (and Kessel) are going to make for some brilliant highlight real saves and and shots off the post.

Schenn is still a stinker compared to others in his draft class
even some of the ones taken after him until he proves he is a top 4 D man which he isn’t yet. And Finger is garbage.

Schenn is just massively inconsistent, right? Work ethic issues and whatnot or other reasons why Wilson sits him.
When you’re comparing against Stamkos and Doughty the 2008 draft class will look like garbage. It’s been only 2 seasons since then. Defensemen aren’t even supposed to be good until around ~22, if not later like ~27.

I have my doubts that he will ever be
a top pair guy and when your drafting a D man 4th or 5th overall that is what you are expecting.

Looking around the league I don’t think there’s even a “top pair guy” per team so I’m not sure that’s completely fair. The stats I’ve read on draft picks point to early defensemen being safe for long NHL careers, and there’s little doubt Schenn is heading towards that. At any rate I think it’s too early to say whether a guy is top-pair good before his hits UFA years. At the moment the only RFA year guys I can think of who are top-pair good are Doughty and Green. Letang will probably join that list as will Bogosian. Greene could be, arguably (I think his RFA years are running out, though), as could Subban, McBain, Hedman, and Karlsson. Only two guys and a bunch of maybes, though. Thin list, that.

Tyler's a good one
…but he’s a rare bird and he’s stuck on a team with four number fours behind him. He’s going to try ( or be asked)to do to much. I’m a big fan of Gillis’s philosaphy of having 6 number 2/3 guys and letting the chips fall where they may.
With good coahing everyone brings something to the party that way . Of course I wouldn’t be mad if Pronger came here, but I’m also not mad about pretty good players like SOB and Rome fighting it out for the #6 spot until (if?) Salo returns. And even then that means Bieksa is the #6? That is some serious defesive depth.
No offence meant to Nolan Baumgardner, but I’d rather him not be the best #7 in the system.
I refuse to have a sigline included with each of my posts. You can't make me!
I love it too.
But I can definitely see Section’s point. The Cup winners since the break had teams both ways ( Carolina did not have a #1 )…but most the rest had a Neidermater,Boyle,KiethLidstrom as a #1.
It is a big weapon.
I do think that the Canucks defense has many guys that can rush the puck and carry the play on occasion…like Ehrhoff, Edler,Bieksa, and..from what I have seen from their highlights…Ballard and Hamhuis can do it too.
As long as they learn to do t at the right time ( and it seems to be a core tenet of our system anyhow…they’ll get a lot of coaching on the subject)…I think the Canucks coming at teams in waves will overcome that #1 thing.
Hell, did not even mention Salo when he comes back, and even SOB if he continues to improve. Hands of fucking stone, but he can rush it pretty good sometimes.

SOB can also rush the dance floor at the Roxy fairly well
I’m hoping that we’ll go the Carolina way (a committee on D) – where no pairing is that dreaded 3rd pairing you hope doesn’t get lit up when it’s out, and all pairings are fairly solid.
As long as Ballard/Hamhuis try not to hipcheck everyone into oblivion

But I hear you VCD...
…generaly having a true number one is the way to go, but can that happen in the cap world with a team as deep as the ’nucks? The top paid D guy is BobblyLou.
You have eiher a top netminder or you have a top defender, I think there’s bit of balance needed, and god help Gillis if Schnieder starts stealing games….cause Lou is here…umm forever…. wether we need him or not.
Don’t tell me that people will be in love with Lou if Edler and Erhoff have to be moved to pay Lou’s contract if it’s proven Schnieder can keep the pucks out of the net just as well for $2 or 3 million a year less.

We'll be keeping both
Blasthoff, Salo and Alberts come off the books next season, should free up enough cap space to sign him. Edler isn’t a UFA till 2013-2014. Other than that we only have to worry about re-signing MayRay.
