Well, at this point you never know what can happen (trades, buyouts). B-Mo is a UFA so he could play for well under $1 million this season as his value has dropped.

I always liked B-Mo. Maybe he can play top 6 while Burrows is out, or line 3 if somebody else gets promoted to the top 6.

i love it

if hodgson or any rookies fail to impress to make the team, we have morrison that can slot in with spot 3rd line duties and 4th line centre position, as well as play on the pk

this just further improves our depth on our bottom 6… especially if he does make the team and signs for 750k or less

by vancitydan on Sep 16, 2010 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Morrison was really streaky for the Caps last year

I believe he had a 14 game point streak and then went 22 games without a point streak, which is rough on the caps. If he’s 3rd line or 4th line center I am down for it. I worry about trips down memory lane for guys like this. He’s a quality guy, tons of heart and wheels but after a few seasons of injuries the chances of him regaining 50-60 point seasons are slim… (on the plus side he did play 74 games and was scratched a couple of times)

Looking at this makes me thinks management didn’t see any of the center rookies pushing for a 3rd/4th line center

by Vokail on Sep 16, 2010 11:21 AM PDT reply actions

Almost agree. We’ll see with Hodgson. But it costs nothing to have Morrison try out here. And you never know…more injuries could happen. If they don’t, I don’t see Morrison even making the team. In fact, I’d prefer Peter Schaefer in there over B-Mo at this point.

If CoHo doesn’t get any preseason games in I think they run him on the farm until he begins to light it up. Then they’ll make room for him.

I don’t get it. What the hell is Washington doing about centre? After Backstrom, they have crap, they don’t have a clear 3rd line centre, let alone a second line centre. Why would they just let both Belanger and Mo go like that? Weird.

That seems like a rather risky and odd plan to me. Clearly both Belanger or Mo, inconsistent or not, are better than any of their current centres after Backstrom. And if Mo is willing to work for low $$$, it just seems very strange to me. I can’t imagine they saw him as a problem player or anything. Maybe under-performing, but still better than what they got left.

by Beantown Canuck on Sep 16, 2010 11:53 AM PDT up reply actions

But in all seriousness

I was wondering that too. Most of the guys at Japers seemed to be really wanting a good 2nd line center over the off season, but they don’t seem to have even thought about it. Or picking up anyone else really

by Sean Zandberg on Sep 16, 2010 2:18 PM PDT up reply actions

For centers they have:
Fleischmann – 51 points in 69 games
Mathieu Perreault – AHL 56 games = 50 points NHL = 21 games = 9 points
David Steckel – 6’5" 222lbs monster with the an great face off %
Boyd Gordon 3rd/4th line center who’s back better be healthy

Then they have a series of long term good talent prospects
Anton Gustafsson
Marcus Johansson
Dimitri Kuznetsov

by Vokail on Sep 16, 2010 12:13 PM PDT up reply actions

Isn’t Fleischmann primarily a winger though? Or did they just have him at wing last year because they also had Mo and Belanger?

And Japers folk complain about him all the time anyway!

by Beantown Canuck on Sep 16, 2010 12:40 PM PDT up reply actions

He had a 43.1% face-off winning percentage last year, and primarily played wing. You want that for your second line?

By comparison, our current line 2 and 3 centres stats from last year:
Kesler: 55.1%
Malholtra: 62.5%

by Beantown Canuck on Sep 16, 2010 12:46 PM PDT up reply actions

Belanger last year was 56.4%
Morrison was 51.2%

by Beantown Canuck on Sep 16, 2010 12:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I would not want

A 43.1% as my second line center. Of course, Malkin is pretty shit in the dot too but whatever, he’s a bit better than The Flash

71 will be playing wing this year

by adiderek on Sep 16, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

If you’re a shity face-off man, but an otherwise passable offensive player, that’s called a winger :)

Only if you’re really spectacular at the other aspects of being a centre (i.e. setting up your wingers) should you still get the centre gig if you’re shit in the dot.

by Beantown Canuck on Sep 16, 2010 1:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Which he will be this year. But he still took a lot of draws at a shitty percentage

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

I actually don’t like bringing in 542 players to gun for roster spots. It seems like almost noone gets enough time to showcase anything in the preseason because it limits everyone’s playing time.

Same thing happened last year. When we pulled in anybody possible as reclamation projects. Probably even invited Krutov. These things pan out 1 in 40 and I just don’t see how it’s worth the effort.

The odd guy here and there is fine. But it seems like it makes almost impossible to get a solid read on someone this way.

of course

something i was reminded of on twitter this morning: next tuesday, we have 2 games at once against the flames. one game in calgary at 6:00 pm, then another game at 7:00 in vancouver. this means both teams are splitting their squads in half.

Disregard previous comment then. People think the league is watered down with 30 teams. Let’s make it 60. Great way to gauge NHL abilities. Play them against ECHL opponents.

by kesrows on Sep 16, 2010 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree

there are WAY too many preseason games for most teams anyway. I mean we know who our top 8 forwards are and our D is pretty set and in goal we are set as well. So if there are only really 5 forward spots up for grabs there is no reason you can’t bring in 10 or 12 guys to go for those spots. There is more than enough time in camp and preseason to see them all a couple of times.
