The Votes Are In & The Exposed Are Out
For the SBN Mock Draft that takes place tomorrow, James Mirtle and Gabe Desjardins (GMs of Winnipeg and Quebec City respectively) can choose from the following unprotected Vancouver players as voted on by you: Glass, Oreskovich, Rypien, Hordichuk, Perrault, Tambellini, Salo, O'Brien, Rome, Alberts & Baumgartner.

Zero comments?! I guess people said their piece over the last few days. All I’ll say is I’m glad the Canucks aren’t run by this committee. Democracy is clearly not the solution; give me a brutal dictatorship any day!
agreed
Some other blogs said the same thing. We’ll see what happens…it’ll be interesting if someone grabs someone like Salo (I doubt it) as it would theoretically give Vancouver some cap flexibility to move. If Salo and SOB move, then we could get another UFA is needed (or keep it for Hodgson if he made the roster).

Um…you do know it’s a hypothetical project that can offer analysis after the team is picked, just as it did before the list of protected players was voted on?

My fuck, those teams are gonna suck cock. Those are the leftovers from, I think it’s fair to say, one of the deepest teams in the league: one good but perpetually broken dman, a bunch of kinda okay bottom-pairing dman, and not a single forward that belongs in a top-nine on an average team.
Probably have a first overall pick though
so that might help a bit.

I think that's the point of an expansion team though
You don’t get to come into the league ready to kick ass.

Free Agents
20 years ago when the league was expanding there was no free agency, so what was expsosed was of higher quality. Now with the salary cap, teams are exposing players that are both not very good, and likely not very good value either. Over at M & G my Flame friends were salivating with the possibility that we could be rid of Kotalik and Staios and their poor value contracts; however there is no guarantee that any expansion team would take them if they felt they could sign a free agent at a better value contract.
Haven’t seen the unprotected lists in the emails…yeah, the Jets and new Nordiques are going to suck. Phoenix left some interesting people available, but Vancouver’s is a collective puke.

I don’t know how any expansion team wouldn’t. The 1-5-9 model basically lets you save everyone except for a backup, #6 Dman and bottom line, which are all pretty replaceable for the most part. And that’s not counting the prospects not eligible.
If there was an actual expansion draft, would the expansion team(s) get to draft in the entry draft at the top of the pool? Maybe if they gave them an additional first rounder at the end of the first round as well it would help kick start it.

I don’t know about an extra draft pick but they get a plum slot. In 2000 the expansion draft for Minny and Columbus happened one day before the entry draft. Minny had the third pick (Gaborik) and Columbus was fourth (Rostislav Klesla).
Fun facts for the 2000 draft: DiPietro went first Torres went fifth, both to the Isles. Guys they could have taken instead, including Gaborik of course: Scott Hartnell, Brooks Orpik, Anton Volchenkov, Alexander Frolov, Kurtis Foster, Antoine Vermette, Dan Ellis. And Nathan Smith!

Beat me to it! I was distracted looking over the 2001 draft… Wow, that sucked! We got Bieksa in the 5th, but other than that…
Another SBN mock draft project idea: create revisionist history and play Mike Milbury at every draft where he made poor selections.

Where can we see the list of who is exposed? And the rules about how they’re going to get picked by the two expansion teams?
by Beantown Canuck on Sep 2, 2010 12:04 PM PDT reply actions
Let’s start guessing who they take.
My guesses are Oreskovich and O’Brien

Is it definite that they take 2?
I think SOB is definitely gone, he’s the only legit fulltime NHLer we left out there. The next closest to that description might be Alberts (lolololol)… Oresko meanwhile is young and perhaps potential… then Ryp has name recognition. So I think SOB for sure, and then should there be a second one out the door, it’ll be down to those other three, depending on what those managers have in mind.

Well there are 2 teams, and to fill out a full roster, each team would have to choose at least once from each team. I agree with O’Brien gone for sure. If this expansion draft is taken serious and injuries are taken into consideration, then Salo probably won’t be drafted and I would put my money on Rypien or possibly Glass as the 2nd. However, if it’s a theoretical exercise, then Salo would be the second player leaving with O’Brien.
