Will Smaller Pads Result in More Leakages for Luongo?
The NHL 2009-10 rulebook reads that there is a 38-inch height restriction on all goalie pads. However, the form-fitting direction the NHL is moving to next season means each goalie will have his own pad dimensions, i.e., smaller goalies will have smaller pads.

Didn't know where to post this as there was no daily thread today. The article mentions that smaller goalies will be more affected by this. I know Luongo is a fairly big guy, but is he big compared to other goalies in the league (I don't really know myself)? How do you think Luongo will adapt to these rule changes compared to other goalies?

I don’t think so. This is to take away the advantage from smaller goalies who were wearing the longer pads because they could. It gave them more 5 hole coverage when playing the butterfly.
Lui is 6’3", which seems to be about the average. ( Cory Schneider is 6’2" )
I went through the current rosters online ( I know…bored right?), and it seems that most goalies are around the same size. Of the starters and backups from last year, the only little fellers I could find ( under 6’) are ;
Tim Thomas 5’11", Turco , 5’11", and two of the guys who benefitted the most from that outdated rule on size, because of the butterfly style they use , Osgood is 5’10". Halak might suffer a little too, as his five hole might gets a little bigger too. He is 5’11".
There are a few monster goalies in the league now too.Kipper’s new back up, Karlsson, is 6’6". Deslauriers in Edmonton is the same.
Pekke Rinne is 6’5", and there are more than a few that are 6’4"( S. Mason, Lehtenon, Dubnyk, Auld, and Mike Smith ) The rest are from 6’3 to 6’0".
Bored? No…I definitely would’ve done that myself. I found this article with less than an hour to go before my final exam, so I might be the bored one here =P
Glad to see Lui isn’t too affected by this rule, as I recall that he had spoken out against reducing pad sizes in the past.
Turco is 5’ 11"?! Excellent.
I could be wrong but
didn’t the league make the dimensions of the padding slightly smaller a few years back, just about the time Luongo started playing somewhat average?
His only year of being average was last year. So if it was a few years back as you claim, then that doesn’t add up.

I doubt a 3 time Vezina finalist
is just good cause his pads are big. But that’s just me. 30 or more wins all 5 seasons he has been in the league and a career.918 save % with a 2.33 GAA. Probably just the pads.

And plus
he’s on the goddamn Rangers. Who are paying Wade Redden 6+ million dollars.

My point wasn’t to attack to the ability of Lundqvist as a goaltender. Rather, I was saying that the Rangers, who face many problems as it is, have another one to worry about.
I don't get what you are saying
if every goalie faces pad reductions in varying degrees then why would this impact Lundqvist and the Rangers more than any other team?

Unless you think he is only good
because of his pads.

I suppose the argument could be that the Rangers rely on their goaltender more than most? I don’t know if any facts can back that up though.
(note: I disagree with the premise… Lundqvist is excellent and I expect no change in that)

I don’t disagree that Lundqvist is a great goaltender. Saying that he’s only good because of his pads would be equivalent to saying the same about Luongo as they have about the same height and probably use similar pad sizes.
Do they Rangers have problems? Yes. You could argue that all teams have some problems, but not every team (except the Flames) has someone like Sather managing the team. That’s mainly what I’m getting at here. The Rangers’ problems will be compounded by the rule change, which probably will be minimal in the end anyways.
Do they rely on their goaltender? Sure, but more than most? I’d wager no, given that their goals per game is around the middle of the pack. I could’ve checked to see which teams in the bottom of the league for goals per game had an elite goaltender, but I wasn’t quite that bored.
So perhaps it was unfair to single out Lundqvist. I can agree with that. The only reason I pointed him out in the first place really was because he was on the Rangers, and their problems are, at least in my opinion, quite laughable. I didn’t expect my comment to be taken so seriously in the first place, and perhaps next time I’ll reserve judgement before posting in haste, especially during final exams.
Well it just came across
as a slight on a great goalie. You made it seem like his pads were so big and that was the only reason he was good. Obviously that isn’t what you meant though so I think we are all good.
