Well, yoata can be funny to. The difference is that what people interpret as anger from you is usually just heavy sarcasm, whereas I get the impression yoata actually is genuinely angry a lot of the time.

I’m fine with leaving Salo and Bieksa unprotected because I doubt a expansion team would take an oft-injured Sami Salo near the end of his career.
As for leaving Bieksa unprotected, I’m fine with letting go of his $3.5M cap hit and keeping the cheaper, but still servicable, O’Brien.

…is going to have the best season of the bunch, but he’s also on the last year of his contract. I wonder if that’s weighting people away from him as a choice?
Certainly possible. I’d imagine he would get picked up too. Not a bad addition for your first year in the league.

I don’t think there’s much doubt that Bieksa is better than O’Brien. Is he $2M better, though? And for a team that’s either right up against or over the cap depending on how long guys are on the LTIR? If you keep Juice, you will very possibly have to move him when guys get healthy anyway. Lose both him and SOB, and you’ve got major depth issues. Let Bieks go now, and you’ve got room to keep O’Brien when Salo gets back. Or look at it much more simply: Do you really want to be paying your 5th (6th when Salo is healthy) D-man $3.75M?

See, I have never totally understood that.
And I do it myself all the time.
Would Ballard and Hammer be that much better if they were signed in the 3 mil range? I read comments from other fans saying we overpayed, but did we?
Its all about what the market is at that time.
I am OK that we got two quality, durable all around defensemen that will be given every chance to succeed.
Both come from places where either circumstance or others on the roster precluded a full exploration of their talents.
I think both can get more points this year just because they are Canucks. We ( well, the players…we just sounds easier sometimes ) play a system that demands the defense to play offensively as the situation dictates. Jumping up and thinking the game.
I respectfully disagree on the heat being on though. I am loving our defense this year. The way AV will have matchup nightmares for other teams.
Any way you slice it you have a talented defenseman on the 3rd pairing. Every way you have guys that are responsible at both ends.
Who’s the #1 though? None. But there are guys that can play on the first pairing quite well. Or well enough anyhow.

This Year
It was all about the defence. Those guys were the ones everyone was going to be fighting over, so to get them meant overpaying. In a different year, it’ll be goalies, or third liners, or power-play specialists. It’s cyclical. Heck, look at the bidding war (called it!) that came up for a defender that missed the end of the season with a serious concussion! That’s a lot of guaranteed money for a physical player who might be one hit away from retirement.
I’m not too happy about the length of Ballard’s and Hamhius’ contracts at that price, but that’s what it cost to get them, so… shrug
Bieksa is a far better player than O’Brien, and would be an instant pick-up for any expansion team. I think Salo’s better than Bieksa, but I became convinced last season that he just can’t be relied on: you put him on the ice at his own risk!
