Mock NHL Expansion Draft - Canucks 9th Forward
We got the ball rolling yesterday and have the protected roster almost set. But we need to figure out who the last forward is that gets protected. Speak now or forever hold your peace.
Voting ends Thursday morning.

Switched my vote from yesterday
I’m now on the keep Oreskovich train.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
Are you sure it was the video?

Poor Glass
As of this moment (Aug 31st, 9:10am), despite the previous mock expansion post where some were willing to protect Glass, he doesn’t have 1 vote in this pole. Probably transferred those to Oreo.
;-P
They’re guys who can offer the team similar things: big hits, occasional fights, eat up 8-10 minutes. Oreskovich is slightly less expensive and younger if we’re examining everything.

Seriously?
13 votes for Rypien???
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Some people vote with
their hearts and not their heads. That or they are stupid. Either or. The whole point is to leave guys exposed that no one would want. ie Rypien.

I just don't get it
Sure, he’s a fighter. What else does he do? I know that it’s beating a dead horse, so I’ll stop.
But if he beats Oreo I’ll throw a fit

I am pretty pissed that Hansen
is winning. I mean we know what he offers and it’s not that much.

Yes
I believe that is what I am hearing in my head.
I wish there was an app that would find me a song that I’m thinking of. That would be really useful
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
And I now suggest
That song is played whenever Oreskovich does something awesome

Look at how much Boogard got as a UFA. Rypien is a much, much, much better hockey player than Boogard.

And your point is?
He is still a player that can be easily replaced if he gets picked. Which he wont.

That I think he’d get picked.
He’s better than the average 4th liner and has a low salary.

Teams can only take one player from each team
though correct? And is a team gonna take a Rypien when they can get a serviceable NHL D man like SOB?

I’m pretty sure since there are two teams, they both get to pick a player from us. So we will lose two Canucks likely. So might well be both. I’m pretty sure that whomever of Bieksa/SOB is left available will be gone. Possibly also Salo (hehehe), but otherwise certainly one of the unprotected forwards. And I’m willing to guess that the whomever does the picking is more likely to have heard of Rypien than Hansen or Glass or Oreskovich.
by Beantown Canuck on Aug 31, 2010 6:01 PM PDT up reply actions
Obviously at least half the teams will lose 2 players, since you need to fill out a 23 man roster and there’s only 30 teams…

You have to think there will be better
players available for them to puck than Rypien. I mean he isn’t that good.

Dude, how many good players are lower than top 9 forwards or top 5 d-men depth on almost any team? And let’s not forget, most teams have 1 or 2 of of those top 9/5 slots available to d-men, so often it will be more than top 9/5
by Beantown Canuck on Sep 1, 2010 7:47 AM PDT up reply actions
See I think what is happening
here is you are blinded by the fact you love the Canucks and you love Rypien. But honestly he isn’t that good at anything other than fighting and I think if an expansion team needs a fighter they can do better than Rypien. There is no need to protect him.

No he really is good at stuff other than fighting. Like forechecking. And playing both wing and center. And there is no better fighter in the league.

There are plenty of better fighters
just none as good as him at his size. But there are better fighters. And he doesn’t forecheck that well. I am not sure where you are getting that from. He plays several positions mediocrely? No thanks. I’ll keep a specialist winger who can play a little hockey.

Well, there’s no way I call Oresko a specialist winger who can play a little hockey… yet. He’s a work in progress. His number were pretty dismal on a dismal team last year, but again, only his first year. Mostly he’s a big question mark, whereas I agree I don’t see Ryp getting that much better.

In terms of stats
Oreo and Ripper are pretty comparable – Rypien got 8 points in 69 games, Oreo got 6 in 50.

I've never disliked Hansen as much as I do now after seeing the current results of this poll...haha
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
The uneducated masses want Hansen. The vocal minority wants Oreskovich. Please tell me this isn’t a true democracy: these polls aren’t binding, right?

Oreskovich
Great hits last year (two a game? Yeeeeeah!) but was there anything else? His +/- was the worst among Florida’s forwards, and that was in only 9 minutes per. I’m a bit concerned that he may pull himself out of position to get the hit. Not an insurmountable flaw by any means, but… I do like that he picked up a couple fights last year, but still only had 26 minutes in penalties in his 50 games.
I want to see him play here before I slot him over Hansen.
But what does Hansen bring to the table that’s unique within the organization? His size and skill set aren’t far off from the likes of Hodgson, Schroeder, Shirokov, or Sweatt. He has experience on his side, but has far less upside at his age (with the probable exception of Shirokov). I think we know what to expect from him: third line mediocrity. What this organization doesn’t have a lot of is guys with size and speed who can play limited minutes on the fourth line and wear their opponents down. I don’t expect more than that from Resko, but I think that’s precisely what we need to get to the next level. I’m tired of a fourth line full of guys who just aren’t good enough to play on the third line.

(not sure where I’m going with this, though, just wanted to have a ‘so there’ moment)
by Beantown Canuck on Aug 31, 2010 4:25 PM PDT up reply actions
Exactly. Oreskovich looks a lot like Ben Eager to me, a guy who had a real impact on the Hawks’ run last year. Top nine type players who aren’t in the top nine on the depth chart belong in the press box or the AHL. The fourth line is for a different type of player altogether.
by Canuckle Head on Aug 31, 2010 5:14 PM PDT up reply actions
Fair enough.
I fully expect both Hodgson and Schroeder to be ahead of Hansen, I’m not convinced that Shirokov can make the NHL, and Sweatt isn’t going to be on the Canucks this year, either.
Oreskovich is a hitter and fourth liner right now, and that’s it. He’s the same age as Hansen, but further behind in development, so while he certainly could become an impact guy, I’d rather go with the devil I know than the one I don’t.
Either way, we’re talking about players who slot in specific roles: it’s just a matter of who you think it’s tougher to replace.
Oreskovich is basically Hansen
with the ability and the desire to hit. And AV is going to like that a lot more than he likes Hansen which at this point isn’t very much by the looks of things.
Also I wouldn’t count out Sweatt. The guy was a pretty high draft pick he has a ton of upside and he is 22 so physically he should be ready for the NHL. It wouldn’t be the first time a guy has jumped straight from his senior year of college, where he has been playing against grown men, to the NHL. He has wheels and hands and you should never discount talent and it’s ability to rise to a new level. I wouldn’t be surprised if he is a great camp and pushes hard for a roster spot.

A lot of people can do things
The question is, how well?
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
Our pk was awful in the playoffs. In the season is was merely mediocre. My point is that Oreo didn’t do any PK or PP the entire season. He was strictly a low-minute even strength player, primarily line 4. Hansen’s history has been more versatile, and he’s at least “ok” at that (being versatile, I mean). It remains to be seen if Oreo can offer anything more than occasional 4th line bruising.
by Beantown Canuck on Sep 1, 2010 12:01 PM PDT up reply actions
(the comment about regular season was meant to continue with “Hansen played nearly 2 min per game on pk in regular season, 5th most for canuck forwards, but only 30 sec per game in playoffs, 7th most for canuck forwards”)
by Beantown Canuck on Sep 1, 2010 12:02 PM PDT up reply actions
Hansen actually loves to hit: he averaged one a game, had 20 takeaways to 3 giveaways, picked up 67 shots and 9 goals in 12 minutes per game.
So: 12th in ice time, 9th in shots, 9th in hits, reliable with the puck, and goes into corners I’ll keep him.
I understand choosing Oyster, too: the guy’s a lot bigger, same age, and would be a fine fit on the fourth.
Well I don't tend to use stats to analyze players
I usually watch them. But hit stats are seriously flawed and I wouldn’t call 1 hit per game ‘loves to hit’. The games I saw this year Hansen plays a pretty peripheral game and only hits when the opportunity arises. Oreskovich goes looking for hits and that’s what I want from my 4th line. Get out there and go hunting around for guys to blow up. It will cost the team the odd odd man rush but long term it is worth it.
