Monday Open Ice
Good morning. It's the beginning of another fabulous week. However, for us school kids, it's time for a reality check: school starts again in 8 days (9 if you don't need to go the Tuesday). Here's what I found for this morning's links:
- I know we all despise Ryan Lambert, but his WWL post today actually agrees with the speculation of the Canucks being conference and Cup favourites.
- Speaking of being "best in the West", The White Towel analyzes the speculation.
- Oilers signed Sam Gagner to a 2-year deal.
- It's our turn for NHL.com's "30 in 30". Take a look at the main article, or go to the NHL.com homepage for more stuff.
- Reports are coming out that Lee Stempniak is staying with the Coyotes.
Open topic for today (one that Chuckles suggested): Is there still usefulness for goons in today's NHL?

Yeeep, we still have those cap problems, injuries, an unproven third line (Is malhotra really worth that money guys? Just saying), prospects people think will jump up and make a difference (but probably won’t), a goalie that’s still the most overrated in the league, and they’re the Canucks so why would you ever pick them to win? We’re absolutely boned.

If Bernier gets the starting gig in net and they steer clear of major injuries, I think the Kings can take the Sharks in the Pacific.
The Central is filthy…the Blues should be better too and Nashville is always tough.

Don’t overestimate the Hawks. Or the Wings. Just my opinion. Yeah, we have a team that can win the West. Absolutely. The next big hurdle is beating the Sharks, who, unless something fukt happens, are my pick to win the Cup.

The Sharks?
They have no goaltending. And Heatley. And Thornton. They aren’t going to win any big games.

I finally saw something out of Thornton in last season’s playoffs. If the goaltending is an issue they’ll deal with it before they get to the playoffs. Is Niitymakii (sp) an upgrade over Nabokov? I dunno. But I liked what I saw from Greiss.

No longer a need for goons beyond the ECHL
When was the last time Detroit, whom I’m calling the most consistent team in the last ten years, had a goon? The old dad and I were trying to come up with a name since Probert and the best I had was Kocur who retired in ‘99 and had relatively few penalty minutes in the 90’s. There’s now more heat of the moment fights between players whose number one job is to score or defend rather than drop the gloves. End of the day the game has had a lot of positive changes over the last five years that initially had the hardcore fan worried, but in the end has made for a much more entertaining game and eliminated the need for goons.
Go help us pick the Canucks to protect for the mock draft SBN is having

but he has been captain for two seasons and choked in the playoffs twice. So to think that suddenly being captain will motivate him to do better is naive at best.

Winning individual awards
and scoring points has about NOTHING to do with being a good captain and a good leader of men. Kesler, IMHO, has way more of the leadership qualities I am looking for in a captain.

Lame argument
lots of guys wear the A in their career but aren’t cut out to be captains. And leading the team in scoring isn’t leading the team in anything other than points. It doesn’t show he is a capable leader in the room who can make his team mates run through walls with him.

I honestly don't think the players
necessarily do need to back the decision. I am OK with the guys not liking the captain as long as they play hard and listen to him. If that makes sense. I had captains and leaders on teams growing up that I hated but they were still good captains.

So why the Hank talk then? I don’t get it. The C weighed too much on the shoulders of our goalie so let’s add that ‘burden’ to a guy who needs to – ideally – build upon his Hart trophy season?
The only person better than Kesler for the C was Mitchell…so either keep the Luongo experiment going or give it the best guy, not the guy with the most points.

Minnesota rotated the captaincy last year? based on player voting in the locker room? Not sure how popular that would be but it would raise expectations on all players to be leaders and play at a higher level given that the could prove to be a worthy captain? Just another option, not saying I’m for it. Personally, for the time being, I’d leave it with Luongo.

Thanks for the shoutout Missy
When it comes to goons, I don’t think they have a use anymore. The NHL has shifted towards being a league where speed is the most valuable tool and older slower and sometimes stronger players can’t impede the faster smaller younger more skilled players. Obviously this is a generalization but it indicates a gradual moving out of the goon position. I have no problem with fighting in hockey, its great to go to a hockey game and see a fight, but if a player can fight and do nothing else, then that is where I draw the line. Especially when that goon doesn’t even fight sometimes and just does cheapshots. If you don’t know already, I pretty much despise Downie and Carcillo. But I can acknowledge that they have hockey skills. Boogaard, has none, and he is being paid more than Asham and Wellfed. The latter doesn’t even have a contract yet! What is the point of having a guy who can play minimal minutes, usually just 5 minutes at the end of the game, skating around with his arms out looking to cheapshot someone or start a fight. Furthermore, the goon has even less of a place on a right up to the cap team that needs scoring, not fighting, in a tough division (relatively) like the Rangers. I have no problem with ATL signing Boulton despite him being a goon because he works hard, is good in the locker room, and most of all, only costs 650 K in a team that has a lot of cap room. I didn’t mind the Hordi signing when it happened, but now I never want him to wear the blue and green ever again. I don’t think goons have a place, but if a GM insists on them, make sure that the goon is signed not at the expense of defensive responsibility or offense.
Now I just have to wait till someone flames me.
Also, since we’re talking about the Rangers, here is a great article about Dolan’s madness.

I am all for de-gooning the league.
Paying someone hundreds of thousands of dollars to play 5 minutes of useless hockey is stupid. And watching one goon fight another good is boring. I would love to see a goon beat the crap out of Matt Cooke (or another cheap-shot player), but those players never fight, they just turn their back on you, and if you whack them, your team goes under for 5 minutes. So, what’s the point?
On the other hand, if a good happens to be a good hockey player, then he will cease to be a goon, since a team cannot affort to lose a good player because of a fighting misconduct, every game.
