wants all the hockey players.

The Royal Tenenbaums, Anchorman, Borat, Office Space, Snatch. There are many more but I can’t think of any right now.

Snatch is one of my faves. Seen it so many times and yet it still makes me laugh like it was the first time.

Hockey: The best and most entertaining sport out there. PERIOD!

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels is also pretty damn funny. It’s basically the exact same premise (Guy Ritchie again), but still hilarious. And I agree, I love Snatch. Need to watch it again

Funniest movies?

Airplane, The Naked Gun (first one), Monty Python’s Quest For The Holy Grail.

I’ll buy ‘somber,’ but not ‘teary-eyed.’

I love Airplane! !

Although my girlfriend always makes fun of me when I mention it. I don’t think she understands. I should force her to watch it sometime

That Botch is so cool.

Comes through again for us. That 3 yrs at 900K is pretty fair, and sort of puts to bed the notion some of our “other Canadian teams’ fans” that the Canucks overpaid to get him here. That sounds like there are barely any bonuses at all. ( its not on Capgeek yet)

Funny movies…depends…that has changed and morphed…Animal House was funny. Caddyshack was so good that people quote favorite scenes from memory…“with voices” in idle conversation to this day!

Of course Python’s Holy Grail ( I dug Life of Brian almost as much ) I love Where the Buffalo Roam for it’s smart HST inspired humour. ( Bill Murray as Hunter…)

Big Lebowski, There Is Something About Mary, Delirious so many funny movies ( an Eddie Murphy concert movie qualifies right? )

We have not even hit the SNL pantheon….of an even better animated one. The Shreks, Toy Story(s)…hell “Up” made laugh harder than most movies of the last few years.

by vancitydan on Aug 28, 2010 3:01 PM PDT reply actions

Yeah 900k seems pretty good. Hopefully he proves to be better than 900k/year material.

Man, Up was funny, but extremely depressing at the same time. I watched it with two of my friends, and we were all going “wtf, this is a kids movie?” after the first 10 minutes. Of course, it lightened up after that, but that intro was rough stuff.

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

by Semi_Colon on Aug 28, 2010 3:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Totally agree. But there were times Up made me laugh just as much. I do have a soft spot for the animated ones though.

How about we jump back into the way back machine. I found the Carry On movies frigging hilarious when I was a kid…maybe because they seemed a staple of the CBC/CTV two channal universe back then.

I loved all the Austin Powers movies as a result.

Connected? Discuss… ;-)

by vancitydan on Aug 28, 2010 3:31 PM PDT up reply actions

i still have a soft spot for animated stuff. what can i say? i’m only 20

Space Jam was good…right? ;-)

The South Park Movie was another.

Funny, I can’t think of any really funny Disney movies … well, except the Pixar ones…but the old classics…do any make the funniest movie list…animated division?

by vancitydan on Aug 28, 2010 3:49 PM PDT up reply actions

Space Jam was good. wow, it’s been years since i’ve watched it.

not sure about the Disney movies, they’re more for kids than adults. they are classic kid movies, though.

Of course. Its funny I cannot think of a really good funny one though. There were alway comedic elements and all, but yeah, they don’t really qualify, do they.

South Park was the first to be nominated ( I think)for a non “animated” academy award…even if it was for a song. Its funny…they sort of pulled together a movies, whereas I kind of thought of The Simpsons Movie as one big episode instead of a movie.

by vancitydan on Aug 28, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Okay,

This is similar to those mentioned above,

Airplane!
Office Space
Old School
Hot Fuzz
Bandits

And I can never remember movies that I enjoy, so I’m sure there are more

Check out

M&G’s convo with Blueshirt Banter. Great discussion on the value of goons (ex. Boogaard), including this gem (no seriously, its a gem) from Parallex:

How is Boogaard fighting another Worthless Goon Y (WGY) going to stop Cheapshot Artist X (CSAX) from cheapshotting Gaborik? Is WGY going to cry about it in the locker room and make CSAX feel so guilty that he won’t do it? No, no he’s not he’s gonna go out there and just nasty it up as much as he wants. Last season our own Goon McGrattan (AKA The Dancing Bear) only played in roughly 1/2 of the games including a lengthy period due to injury and in my opinion in terms of cheapshots the Flames took the difference between the games where he dressed and games where he didn’t was roughly zero.

I have no objection to fighting in hockey, sometimes emotions run high but it’s a hockey game not boxing or MMA so if your gonna fight fine but you better damn well have the hockey skills to play at an elite level like the NHL and the sad fact is that guys like Boogaard & Ivavans just don’t, they’ll be stars in a beer league but I doubt they could hang with ECHL’ers in terms of skill.

One last bit… what makes it worse is that this is Boogaard we’re talking about here. Boogaard isn’t a deterrent to cheapshots he encourages them because he’s most likely the one that’s going to perform them. Boogaard IS a cheapshoter. And this isn’t a case of "you like them if they are on your team" I would want to throw rotton garbage on Boogaard if Sutter had signed him that’s how loathsome and untalented he is.

I was at the game where he gave Brandon Prust a behind the play hit, completely unprovoked, that resulted in a concussion in the last minute of a decided game. He wasn’t out there protecting/defending anyone he was searching for someone to injure… guys like him shouldn’t be allowed to play in the NHL let alone make a million dollars a year to do so.

He’s got a point. I’ve always thought of goons as the equivalent of midgets at a wrestling match.

by Sandwich76 on Aug 29, 2010 7:50 AM PDT up reply actions

maybe nowadays with the stupid instigator rule. But if Wayne Gretzky didn’t have Dave Semenko he wouldn’t a lot points. Cementhead was his cop. In that sense I am pro goon

by Sean Zandberg on Aug 29, 2010 8:23 AM PDT up reply actions

ha!

That was exactly what I was thinking about earlier this morning, I remember Semenko coming out with Gretzky and putting the fear a god in the opposing teams hearts. I’m okay with that, cheap shots deserve a punch in the face, even if it’s later in the game. Right now the cheap shot guys are protecected and we have virtually meaningless fights, it’s a sad state of affairs! (Read last phrase with yiddish accent)

by Sandwich76 on Aug 29, 2010 8:38 AM PDT up reply actions

The fights are never meaningless. I like the entertainment value, like Rypien ragdolling whoever.

useful now in the post Gretzky era?

I’d say yes. To a lesser degree but still. Can Torterella throw Boogey out there if someone is taking liberties with Gaborik? Sure. But a smart agitating middleweight can irritate Booger to the point of him taking a penalty as well. Annoying.
I like fights though. So do the paying public at the games. I hope we never lose the sideshow goon vs goon aspect.
