Thank You Kyle Wellwood

I can already hear the jeers and/or chuckling going on after reading that headline but I don't care. The jokes thrown at Wellwood over the past few years have been justified because he reported to camp out of shape with both the Leafs and the Canucks a couple years back and, well, hockey fans jump all over that. But I'm not here to laugh at him. Frankly I think it's getting old but aside from that, Wellwood took the jokes in stride and put out some pretty solid efforts as a member of the Canucks.

In 149 regular season games with Vancouver, Woody scored 32 goals and 20 assists with mostly 3rd line minutes but with decent PP minutes. In 22 playoff games he scored 3 goals and 10 assists. He was 6th overall in faceoff winning percentage in the 2009-10 playoffs. He was 18th in the NHL in that category during the regular season.

He tried to show grit despite his size, and used his craftiness to win battles most of the time. He HAD to or he wouldn't play as he was on a short leash. He couldn't crack the top 6 and was given checking line duties. And crafty he was. He provided plenty of "holy sh*t" moments, and having said that, here is a video compilation/tribute for the little guy:

THANK YOU FOR MAKING HENRIK LUNDQVIST LOOK STUPID

STAY CLASSY, AV. I laughed though. I'll admit it.

REMIND YOU OF SOMEONE? Damn, no finish. What a save.

PRAISE FROM TSN. This was definitely a highlight for Woody as a Canuck

MORE ON THAT

DOUSING THE FLAMES? Atta boy!

ROOF JOB VS THE WINGS

OH MY!

YEAH, DON'T COUGH THE PUCK UP TO THIS GUY. This was Game 1 vs the Blues.

Would I take Wellwood over Malhotra as the 3rd line center? No. But he could still fit on several other teams' roster. I guess those teams' GM's don't agree as Woody remains unsigned. He'd probably put up a lot of points in Europe. The wide open game favors him more.

Woody has taken a lot of abuse from his bosses, his mates and the fans but I just wanted to stray from that school bus mentality and give him some credit that I think he deserves. Best of luck in the future and thanks for entertaining us on so many nights. I'm a fan. I'm not ashamed to admit it.

Seeing all of those back to back reminds me… of how much of a dinky little stick he uses! That thing’s gotta be at least a foot shorter than Mitchell’s timber.

Well said

indeed. When he deked the whole oilers team, that was about as good as it gets.

I loved that. When I was watching that game, I was thinking “Is he actually going to – no, he just did! Holy shit!”

And every time after that game when I saw Welly start dangling at the blueline I kept thinking back.

Like everyone has said, he was one of the most determined players in the playoffs this year – it’s like he knew it might be last chance.

Well written

I see Woody uses a wooden stick and likes the dangles, like I do. I suddenly sense a kinship with our portly compatriot. Good luck to Wellfed, I hope he becomes a 50 goal scorer in the Swedish Elite League.

He did provide plenty of “holy sh*t” moments, but it drove me crazy watching him try to stick handle most nights, only to loose the puck in the offensive zone. I’m glad he’s gone, but I do give him credit, he did put in the effort and he changed his game to accommodate the Canucks need for a checking 3rd liner centerman. Hope he lands a job in the NHL and we get to see some more highlights once in a while. (Maybe PIT now that J. Staal is injured? Or maybe ATL, NYI, CAR)

The AV soundbite was hilarious, and the goal off the take away from St Louis in game 1 was awesome.

Another awesome video montage post Sean!

by DD WEST on Aug 28, 2010 2:56 AM PDT reply actions

Not afraid to agree Sean.

I was always a fan. Everytime he employed those magic mittens and have one of those holy shit moments was one where you could shutdown those Welly haters. “See…did you see that?”

They were right about his defense when he got here. But by the last year, and after watching closely, you saw a Kyle wellwood that actually hit. he wasn’t wobbling the boards or anything, but he developed a very effective physical game ( translation…stick his butt in and use that small stick to beat others to the puck ) …often breaking pressure and clearing the puck with the team running around.

That calmness and style will be missed too.

He handled the fat jokes with good humour as well…

Good luck Welly ( yes, maybe in the SEL, but I would not count him out in the NHL just yet. He may get paid a little less, but someone will remember that talent.

by vancitydan on Aug 28, 2010 3:26 AM PDT reply actions

I always had a soft spot for him too.

He’s extremely frustrating to watch, in that, he has the hands to deke past 4 guys… but he just can’t get the puck on net after he beats the goalie. You’d have all these holy shit moments, and then be severely let down when he can’t put the puck on an empty net.

He played hard most nights, and he was a pretty good sport. The media ripped him hard, all the time, but if we acknowledge him for who he is, an offensive-minded center, who can distribute the puck well, and treat him as such, he was a pretty good team player.

We obviously don’t have the room for him (salary or talent-wise), but I wish him all the best. This was a lot easier to read than the thank you post for Demo at least!

I was okay with Demitra

Just not his paycheck! He was smart with the puck and he and Sundin did a lot to move Kesler’s game along. But 4.5 or what ever it was for a declining veteran was way too much. I would have been happier with 2 or 2.5.

It’s sad to see him go, he’ll make a good second line center for some team, some where.

by Sandwich76 on Aug 28, 2010 7:18 AM PDT reply actions

Hey you guys! Five teams that should be courting Wellwood

Edmonton Oilers – Already small at center, but they’re a mess, lousy at faceoffs and can’t score, he’d provide some stability
Toronto Maple Leafs – They don’t have a lot of capspace, but they should be begging him to come back and throw pucks at Kessel
Phoenix Coyotes – Put him between Pyatt and Upshall, dump that bum Hanzal to the third line
New Jersey Devils – Can’t sign Kovalchuk? Have I got a deal for you!
Carolina Hurricanes – Tons of cap space, not very deep at center and also lousy at faceoffs

with all the jokes and criticism over the 2 years, we sure gave it to him hard. however, it was awesome to watch all those sickening chances he had, especially when it felt like he was the only player to show up to play at times during the playoffs.

and that TSN redemption clip is hilarious. “who’s the extra trainer?…he doesn’t exactly have the prototypical hockey body” and “he’s in good shape for Kyle Wellwood right now”? they’re just fucking teeing off on him.

by Passive Voice on Aug 28, 2010 3:24 PM PDT reply actions

And that is why I hope he stays in the league.

To rub their noses in it. The fact that a guy like Welly can make a million and more playing in a game that none of these broadcasters ( ex players excluded , of course ) ever could must be the final laugh.

Not that Welly would laugh at them like that. Well…maybe…but probably more like this.

Ever notice how many times Wellwood’s face was lacking in emotion when he scored for us? It’s like he was skating around with a gun pointed at his head.

Don’t think I’ll miss him too much now that Malhotra is here and Hodgson is poised to make the team. Only downside is we’ve lost our shootout specialists in Wellwood and Demitra. Hopefully we don’t have to rely on a skills competition to give us our points.

Play it again san

Great highlight package, did not have any problem with Wellwood the last couple years. Bernier, Demitra, and Johnson were much bigger zeros in my opinion. Now how about a few more highlight packs for the existing team, I can’t get enough of this stuff right now. One a day until the end of preseason should be about right. You could probably even get a few extra in there, i.e. some Oreskovich or prospects not named Hodgson highlights.

Honestly, Wellwood was such a cool little guy. He developed a solid two-way game as a third-line center and I’m honestly surprised he hasn’t been picked up in free agency.

We all hated Wellwood when he played for us. Long stretches without scoring, little to no physical play, etc etc etc.

Now all of sudden he is gone and we are missing him? And his “solid two way play”? WTF is going on?

I've always defended him.

As for his two-way play, I wrote a post back in May about his defensive abilities. I honestly think he’d be beneficial to a lot of NHL teams that have a lack of depth at centre.
