Mock Expansion Draft
Head on over to the main SBN hockey page for a mock experiment all the hockey blogs are working on. Assuming the NHL did expand, you can vote on what cities should receive a franchise and why. Then, starting next week, you can help us decide which players on the Canucks we would protect for an expansion draft. More on that to come...

Can you imagine Portland, Seattle and Vancouver with teams?

Very cool idea, I fantasize about this stuff all the time. And this draft is finally a chance to jetison our sloppy seconds Alberts and SOB to some unsuspecting expansion team!
And I would love Seattle to have a team, especially given the support for WHL hockey in Washington State. They got my vote along with Hamilton.

I picked Portland and Winnipeg
I would have picked seattle, except just a couple weeks ago I was speaking with a co-worker from portland and he was talking about how big hockey is there. They support their basketball team without much issue, and the winterhawks are consistent sellouts, so it actually seems a better choice than seattle. It’s not that he dissed seattle, matter of fact he thought they both could use a team…but hearing him talk about portland specifically my opinion was that they actually could support one, and I’m not convinced seattle could (see: sonics, super). Of course that’s based on one guys opinion, not actual research heh.

Seattle has way more people, 1.2 million,
and way more potential corporate support. The Sonics leaving had NOTHING to do with lack of support. It had everything to do with city council not being willing to build a new arena despite building Safeco and Qwest. Seattle is a VASTLY better sports market than Portland.

Oh I know all that
Just…there is a difference in what people like in the two cities…like i said my first thought woulda been seattle…til I spoke to someone from one of the two cities.

Well correct me if I am wrong but the
Thunderbirds get good crowds and consistently sell out when they are good.

key words being
when they are good. The winterhawks sell out anyways…that’s a big difference in community. At the end of the day smarter guys than either you or I would make these decisions tho…for example i’d never think of KC as a hockey place, even though they had a team…

You don’t think it might be because they’d splooged all over those stadia?

Well either way
it’s a little shameful to build new stadia for two teams and then refuse the third. I mean do them all or do none.

The west needs more teams so i chose Seattle, but seeing they lost the Sonics can they support another pro team?
My second choice was Quebec…sorry Winnipeg. I just thought that Quebec would have a better chance to finance a team then Manitoba.

If you want to get a jump start on Vancouver's protected list for next week...
…here are the rules:
>> Teams can protect either 1 goalie, 5 defensemen and 9 forwards OR 2 goalies, 3 defensemen and 7 forwards
>> If you go the two goalie route, at least one goalie left unprotected must have played in at least 10 games last season OR 25 games in the last two seasons combined (One game = at least 31 minutes)
>> Each team must leave unprotected at least one defenseman who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined
>> Each team must leave unprotected at least two forwards who appeared in 40 games last season OR 70 games in the last two seasons combined
>> Players who have played in 49 or fewer games are automatically exempt and do not need to be protected
There’s still some ambiguity in those rules, so drop any questions in the comments and we’ll try and get them answered. Also anyone who protects Hordichuk will be banned :P

if I’m the guy picking for the expansion team, I would probably select either O’Brien or Hansen, depending on what skill set seemed harder to get elsewhere.

Good thing it's today's roster.
That means you don’t have to worry about CoHo or Shroeder or whoever else makes the team.
by Vancouverguy on Aug 27, 2010 12:06 PM PDT up reply actions
Couldn't we leave Salo AND Bieksa
unprotected? We are trying to get rid of Bieksa anyway. I don’t think a team would want to take Salo cause of his injury concerns and if they took Bieksa it would relieve some cap issues. This way we could protect Rome or SOB who have much cap friendlier contracts.
And to be honest I would rather protect a guy like Hansen or Oreskovich than Rypien. Let’s keep guys who can actually play hockey and have upside rather than a player who can fight but is very average at most everything else.

I think Rypien is a pretty inspiring player. We don’t know much about Oreskovich yet so that’s basically why I left him out, and I’m of the opinion that Hansen, though I like him, doesn’t quite fit in our roster. I don’t know if that makes any sense.
And regarding Salo/Bieksa… I still think we can trade Bieksa away for something rather than nothing, which is why I would protect him. And I would be happy with them taking Salo, though I doubt they would.

I'm looking at this from a cap situation though
and I doubt a GM picking in an expansion draft would be looking to take guys on one year deals. The last thing you want to do is have to re-sign a bunch of players you just drafted. Bieksa is a fairly large cap hit on an expiring deal and I think it would be worth the risk to leave him exposed and keep a guy with a lower cap hit.
And as much as we don’t know about Oreskovich we do know what we get from Rypien which is very little. Especially in the playoffs when a fighter isn’t needed. Even if he is ‘inspiring’ which I doubt.

And if they do take Bieksa
it would allow us to go after a Guerin type player to fill out our top 9 forwards.

Aren’t they both ufa’s after 2011 too? I’d definitely leave salo unprotected.

I think everyone agrees on Salo. Bieksa is the debate. Keeb O’Brien protected and leave Bieksa available? My vote is no, Section thinks yes. Or is it someone other than O’Brien?
by Beantown Canuck on Aug 27, 2010 12:36 PM PDT up reply actions
I would also have serious reservations
about protecting Rypien. He is a player whose skill set is easy to find and replace. A guy like Hansen or Oreskovich who could be more than just a fighter are worth keeping around. Especially for a guy like Oreskovich who appears to have some upside.

I have to go with BC here
regarding Bieksa. At first I was leaning towards exposing him for the reasons Section laid out, but I can’t imagine that many Top-4 defensemen would be available for picking making Bieksa that much more tempting. And the expansion club always has the option to trade Bieksa during the season anyway. I’d rather that we be the ones to trade Bieksa for something.
Regarding Rypien, it’s probably smarter to expose him. But dammit, I love watching him fight.
You gotta realize something here
leaving guys exposed doesn’t mean they get picked. There is a VERY good chance that in this scenario that leaving Rypien exposed wouldn’t lead to him going anywhere. Why pick him if you have a shot at a serviceable NHL D man in SOB or a young guy like Hansen. I think leaving Rypien exposed makes a tonne of sense since no one would pick him.
The question with Bieksa is what we can get for him in a trade as it becomes more and more important that we move him, time wise. We might not get anything “back” for him but letting him go and keeping a guy like SOB with some upside and more years of cost control would be just as good as trading him for a third liner.

Swap Rypien for either Hansen or Oreskovich (not sure at this point who I’d choose…would like to decide post-training camp), and that would be my list.
Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose.
