Hey, that's not the Eastern Conference man!

There goes my wet dream of Mitchell/Hamhuis. Oh well.

Thanks for some spectacular years and all the battles Willie.

Straight up: this sucks? pout

Willie has been one of my favourite Canucks during his time here and, I may take some heat for this, I think that if he had played out the rest of his career here he would have achieved near-Linden status in Vancouver (or at least in my head).

by Wilke on Aug 25, 2010 11:58 AM PDT up reply actions

No heat from me. I would have made him our captain if he played out his career in Vancity.

One of my fave Canucks too. Good luck Willie…now that you are a King…hopefully you are hurt by the time we meet in the 2nd season!

You know that with the injuries and everything we’re going to be watching Bieksa all season, and scratching our heads. “Same money could have been for Mitchell.” I guess Gillis wanted a discount, and probably a one year contract. I understand Gillis, but I’m still going to scratch my head when those unnecessary penalties come.

by antro on Aug 25, 2010 12:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, if so, yes. But I think it’s very likely we’ll need to move Bieksa. I’d put that a 90% likely right about now.

by Beantown Canuck on Aug 25, 2010 12:07 PM PDT up reply actions

GMs have no need to line up and help us out. Bieksa is either tough to move or Gillis is asking too much. Maybe both.

'Nucks Misconduct - Housing Swedish Millionaires Since 2000.

by Yankee Canuck on Aug 25, 2010 12:08 PM PDT up reply actions

True. But if we need to move him, we need to move him. And as it stands right now, when Salo comes back, let alone Burrows, we will need to move him. Or do something else more drastic. There would have been no room for him otherwise.

by Beantown Canuck on Aug 25, 2010 12:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I think that’s the point though. Right now, there is no need to move him. Another team will have an injury that they could use a Bieksa type to fill by the time Salo is ready to come back (assuming, of course, that that day comes).

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

There is no need to move him for a crap return with any urgency. If all we can get back is crap, then we just need to wait until the last minute when the cap forces us to. But the moment someone offers us some quality, we should take it, assuming no other big-salary d-man is injured.

by Yankee Canuck on Aug 25, 2010 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions

But the other GMs are not in that position. At least not until December.

The Canucks are under with the LTIR of Salo and Burr. He can deal Bieksa from a position of strength right now.

From what I remember reading over the last few weeks, the Kings were the only ones to offer 2 years. For the money he got, the other teams were not really in, were they?

by vancitydan on Aug 25, 2010 12:15 PM PDT up reply actions

SJS, VAN & WAS may have gone the incentive-laced route. Kings have money to burn, maybe ignored the health factor (focused more on the mentor Doughty route?) and LA is close enough he may not need to uproot the family from BC.

I still don’t understand why they’re paying Poni more money than Frolov took from the Rangers. I find that baffling. Some real bridges must have been burned because I see that as a slight downgrade.

Yeah I think Frolov was done with them. Whether or not that was deserved I’m not too sure.

'Nucks Misconduct - Housing Swedish Millionaires Since 2000.

by Yankee Canuck on Aug 25, 2010 12:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Frolov was an enigma wrapped in Tolstoy wrapped in a vest.

An vest with a crazy fucking grin on his face at the most awkward times.

The current FO’s desired style and his just didn’t mesh and if Murray is going to be coach (which is likely for the forseeable couple of years you’d think) Frolov wasn’t long for the team. Dude will be good in NY, possibly great. It’s all about the coaching style and personality.

The Poni contract is rather a mystery to me. I don’t hear fantastic things from the East about his play, but then Modin was supposed to suck too and he was pretty solid, so we’ll see.

Honestly, after how long it took for Mitchell to come back I’d be happier with Bieksa. Everyone seems to rag on him because of that one play but other than some freak skate lacerations he’s been pretty dependable on the blueline. Mitchell could be 1 more concussion away from hanging up the skates for good and that could happen on any hit. A 2 year deal is pretty risky.

Haha section, down to name calling and personal attacks? That’s pretty sad. Basically my post is word for word based on your previous posts, other than the down to 7 healthy players still being champions haha. I’m “Dumb and Delusional” for believing that an injury impacts a players performance. OK. I must be out of my mind craaaazzzy. Thanks for setting me straight!

by DD WEST on Aug 25, 2010 1:54 PM PDT up reply actions

See this is the problem

other than you being an idiot which was just a joke until this last post. I never said injuries aren’t a factor. But they are a very small factor. And they aren’t a factor in who wins and loses games. The players on the ice decide who wins and loses. And the best teams, as I said yesterday, cope with injuries and players playing hurt better than other teams and that’s what leads to championships. I also said they cope better through depth, determination, a combination of both and other factors. Which leads to the bottom line statement that the best team wins and if the Nucks lost to the Hawks it was cause the Hawks were a better team. Claiming we would have won were it not for injuries is making excuses. You have to get the job done with the players on the ice. This is a pretty basic tenant of sports that coaches should have taught you when you were about 5 years old. Although judging from some of your posts maybe you are going to learn that next year.

You want to whine, thanks Twitchy, and cry about injuries and make other excuses and talk about what might have been. Go ahead. But that tells me you are the kind of person who will just get by in life. It shows me you don’t have the fortitude to look in the mirror and really assess yourself and make changes. Just like you don’t have the fortitude to look at the Nucks and see their short comings and what REALLY cost them in last year’s payoffs. Good thing our GM seems to be able to do it. Hence the changes he has made for this up coming season.

It’s funny that everyone else got the tongue in cheekness of that post but you didn’t. Could it be cause you are D and &D?

Now go away. You have been weighed, measured and you have been found wanting.

Chandla, how goes it? Anyway, with Willie gone and Salo broken for however long, it’s Bieksa’s time to shine. Him stepping up would go a long way to establishing the team as contenders. For realz! Seriously, I didn’t know Bieksa sucked until i joined up here. I well and truly believe his injuries are behind him, and we’re going to get the pre-big money Bieksa.Unfortunately, that big money dictates that he’ll be moved at some point this season.

As for being scared of yoata, pffft. Wait, he’s right behind me, isn’t he?

Good to hear from you, sir. Now, off to your koala milking, or whatever it is you do down there.

Totally agree that there is no eral downside on Juice unless he totally shits the bed and has a horrible season.

Honestly? having him in a 3rd pairing is not that bad at all. can shield him a bit, work the matchup.

But still, injuries impact teams. A whole variety of inputs impact teams. To say that injuries isn’t one of them is just silly. To overly rely on injures as an explanation is just making excuses. The truth lies in the middle.

by Beantown Canuck on Aug 25, 2010 3:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Well obviously that's true

it’s also true that healthy or not the Hawks were better than us and would most likely have won that series anyway. And so saying injuries was why we lost is an excuse.

Now let’s go back to robbing the Kings system of all it’s talent.

Great move for the Kings. They should be really excited to have added an elite defenseman like Willie.
In spite of whatever we Canucks fan hope for (such as he will get re-injured), I think he will have a rejuvenated career with the Kings and will do great against the Canucks. But I don’t blame Gillis for this, he simply didn’t have the money to match the offer. The $3.5 is a lot of money and too risky. The Kings, however, could easily afford it.

Bottom line, the Canucks got better this year, and so did the Kings. They should be a great match up this season, and good subject for future debates.

I thought about that. Two year deals go by just as quickly as Demitra on the LTIR.

This will make the home opener awkward

He kept saying LA was “genuinely excited to have him there”
And we weren’t?? Damn it. This is a very tricky situation. I’d take Mitchell over Ballard or Hamhuis but the concussion issues remain. A 2 year 3.5 million deal is tough to turn down. No way in hell we could afford that with the new signings. Willie gets it though. A cap casualty.
This is so OUR LOSS. Fuck. But if he gets hit again and pulls a Lindros well…….
Fuck. One of my fave Canucks gone. It just sucks.

By genuinely excited he means the bed of bejamins he will be resting his weary noggin on.

Just kidding. I think.

I hope that’s sarcasm….If not, then I think you should buy a Hordichuk jersey.

I once saw a girl with a Hordichuk jersey

and I vomited. The sight of any poor soul in a Hordi jersey enrages me like you wouldn’t believe.

it does blow

willie for 3.5 is a great deal for LA assuming he returns anywhere near pre-concush form. i don’t doubt that MG would have happily given him that in a non-capped world. bummer bummer bummer.

Sad

to see Mitch go. However, watched the gold medal Canada vs. US game on TSN2, not sad anymore.

Andrew Alberts-like. At least Crosby is a forward though. Alberts has no excuse.

how do you have five guys below the hash marks and still allow a dman to fly in unmolested?

wasn’t known for his goal scoring or his backhand too.

Pitts was fukt. Wasn’t that their 3rd string goalie in net? With the 4th soon to follow? Sad part is Willie got his block knocked off soon after

Yeah but even Gonchar looked shaky that game like when he coughed it up to Burrows on the PP. When the team in front of you isn’t playing defense it’s hard to blame the goalie.

by marcness52 on Aug 25, 2010 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions

I wasn’t really blaming the goalies. I just thought we caught a bit of a break with their injury situation
