Raffi Torres: Worth it?
On the evening of August 24th, news had come about that the Vancouver Canucks had signed gritty winger Raffi Torres to a 1-year deal worth $1million. The 28 year-old left winger is coming off a season in which he tallied 19 goals and 17 assists in 74 games split between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Buffalo Sabres
The questions is: Is he worth it?
Raffi Torres will certainly add grit and toughness to the 3rd/4th lines, and possibly maybe even the 2nd line with Alex Burrows starting the season on the IR.
Even though the Canucks are over the salary cap, they will get cap relief with Sami Salo and Alex Burrows on the injury reserve, so the 1 million dollars works out to a good deal
In comparison, Ryan Clowe scored 19 goals, and his 2010-11 salary is 3.625 million. Raffi Torres scored 19 goals and his 2010-11 salary will be 1 million.
In the end, the addition of a gritty 6-foot, 223 pound winger that will add toughness and garbage goals, is going to help round out the Vancouver Canucks bottom-six forwards

Thanks for joining up and adding a fanpost. As long as he stays healthy and has decent linemates, he should do just fine. Definite upgrade over Bernier.

Solid post
If we look at Torres as a Bernier replacement except with better hands, quicker and cheaper, it looks like a nice deal.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

The cap isses aren't so bad either.
Say you dump Hordichuk and Alberts (Which pretty much all Canucks fans would like to see). Your only about two million over the cap with the following line-up:
Sedin-Sedin-Samuelsson
Raymond-Kesler-Burrows (Injured, replaced by Hodgson?)
Torres-Malhotra-Hansen (Hodgson when Burrows returns
Glass-Rypien-Hansen(When Burrows returns)
Hamhuis-Ballard
Edler-Ehrhoff
Bieksa-Salo (Injured)
O’Brien
Rome
The money saved from Burrows and Salo should allow this line-up to stay together all-season.

Ok, I double-checked with capgeek
The actual number would be 2.6 million over the cap.
Assuming Burrows and Salo each miss approximately 1/3 of the season (both are expected out until December), that free’s up about 1.8 of that money. So that still leaves the team 0.800 over the cap. So when Alex and Sami do come back, one of Hodgeson, O’Brien or Rome will have to be sent to the minors.

Or a trade of a minor guy. Or a blockbuster. Or a waiver. Who knows how some of the kids do at camp?
Lots of options, and a very deep team.
I am not totally willing to throw Alberts on the trash heap just yet either.
Let’s see how he does at camp. He might even surprise us.
O'Brien and Rome are both better plays.
True that O’Brien is more expensive, but he’s more effective.

Maybe. There has to be some reason why the guy was pretty well thought of ( for his price point ) in Philly, Boston and Carolina.
He is huge, and I saw flashes of his game towards the end. He was put in some positions due to injury that he won’t any more. Slotting in and out. Being more of a situational player is where I see him.
I do love both the other guys though. Rome is a Cap buster…and if SOB gets past the distractions and goes all mature on us, he could have a breakout season even more than he did last year. It was his best here anyhow…

Hordichuk yes. Alberts no.
There are vast differences there.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

I like Hordichuk better than Alberts actually..
But when it comes to cap restraints I have no problem getting rid of either.

Torres
…is going to be inspired to get back to that 20-goal level this season: he saw what a cold streak at the wrong time can do to your paycheque.
Whether he’ll get to that point is going to depend on how much power play time he gets. It’ll definitely be second-unit stuff, if he gets any at all. I do know Burrows wants a bit of PP time, but that doesn’t mean AV is going to give it to him.
Given that this was a team that kept putting Bernier out in front of the net, that could be Torres’ role this time out. He is strong on his skates, so it’s a possibility.
Burrows was given opportunities on the PP last year but he just didn’t seem that effective for some reason. So I’m definitely up for giving Torres a shot.
I’d rather have Malhotra or Hodgson (if he makes the team) on the PP instead of Torres. I wonder how many PP assists Torres had last year. If you take away the PP goals he’s left with 29 points. If he gets no PP time then he could just put up the same numbers as Bernier. Although he’s doing it cheaper.
If Hodgson makes the team, which I think he will, I agree that he should get the PP time. Not so sure about Malhotra, Id probably prefer Torres. BTW, Torres had 3 PP assists.
So he had 26 non PP points. Still pretty decent for a 3rd liner. I guess he’ll probably be better than Bernier since Bernier had only 22 with PP time. And Torres is much cheaper. Not overly thrilled about ex-Oilers but he should be an upgrade over Bernier.
Does it really matter where he used to play?
Or is it more important that he is a decent player for us to have on our team now?

Past experience...
…has some bearing on where Torres might get used. If he was particularly effective on the power play before, he’ll be more likely to get a chance at it here.
Make sense?
I was talking more about
liking/not liking the signing based on where the guy played before.

Unless his name is Mark Messier,
as far as I’m concerned once a guy’s traded to or signs with the Canucks, he’s a Canuck, so who cares where he used to play?
I'll wait to see
how this pans out.

Sorry to be late to the party
But the end reult is Raffi replaces Bernier at a million and two less, has a pretty decent scoring resume and by all accounts isn’t afraid to mix things up. There’s certainly worse bottom six wingers we could have in that price range.
I think we saw that last year. BTW I’ll miss you Darcy.
I’m sold on Manny as the number three centre, I think Raffi will get a long look on the wing…those two should make Cody’s life easy if he makes the cut. Or hell Hanson (don’t get the hate for him, he’s pretty good at what he does) would be a nice mix with them.
Great signing. Gillis is doing a pretty bang up job. On paper anyways……
Raffi and Malholtra played on the same line for a while in Columbus, which is another reason I like this.

Only one problem....
If Raffi Torres is playing a limited role with the Canucks; which I predict he will be then we also have to think if he is taking a spot away from a prospect who has potential. Of course the Canucks are getting great value in the signing however you have to look at pros and cons.
