Seems about right.

On the plus side, he’s younger than I thought. I’m still searching for more positives than that. Hold please…

He was a 5th-overall pick

Islanders picked first and fifth, took DiPietro and Torres. Insert laughter.

He’s a 40+-point player if healthy (big if lately), but he seems hit and miss. My Oilers fan friend was pretty indifferent to him leaving for Columbus. That says a lot to me.

I just saw that…my god fifth overall?

Yeah, the obvious problems are he hasn’t played a full season in four years nor has he finished in the black on the +/- either. And there goes money for Mitchell so that probably kills that.

Grumble, grumble

Yeah…I missed that…so 17 assists, and 36 points!

Nothing wrong with a vet that brings it.

No Cup rings, but he got to the Finals with the Oil in another lifetime!

19 goals is good for a third liner, though i’m guessing he did that with a lot of 2nd line minutes considering he was on columbus?

by Beantown Canuck on Aug 25, 2010 7:08 AM PDT up reply actions

Not really.

He was running at about 13.5 minutes per game – though he got time on the second unit power play, too, and that got him seven of his 19 goals. Don’t know how much of that he’ll get with the Canucks.

by Thursday on Aug 25, 2010 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

7 goals on the PP would tie him with Son of Sam for 4th on the team, so I’d take that. More than Burr, Welly, Hank, or Bernier got last year.

by Beantown Canuck on Aug 25, 2010 3:20 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah but Torres probably won’t see any time on the PP.

by marcness52 on Aug 25, 2010 4:48 PM PDT up reply actions

remember Isbister?

Fun fact: When Edmonton originally traded for Torres from the Islanders, he came along with Isbister. Wow, I still remember when Dave Nonis was scouring the rejects to find players to fill out the bottom six. What a step up from Isbister days.

I still see possibilities for Willie to sign here (2-2.5 mill for a year?), and moving two d-men elsewhere, including minors. Bieksa would have to be traded, but we still don’t know how long Salo will be out.

So you are saying you aren’t a fan Ryan, like your friend? ;-)

You have to love hockey fans…was just looking at his Wiki page, and it already says he plays for the Canucks!

by vancitydan on Aug 24, 2010 9:48 PM PDT up reply actions

Not sure why he got in 14 games for the Sabres

But I like the year before in Columbus. 19 goals, 12 assists, adn 3 GW?

Works for me. The guy seems to bring it in the games I have seen.

by vancitydan on Aug 24, 2010 9:43 PM PDT up reply actions

Uh… this one was out of left field. Don’t really see where he fits on this squad, unless it’s on the 4th line. How many is that under contract now? Gillis does realize we don’t have a B-team, right?

"Bolstering the bottom six"

By my calculations, the following players are vying for “bottom six” minutes:

Jannik Hansen
Manny Malholtra
Rick Rypien
Darcy Hordichuk
Tanner Glass
Alexandre Bolduc
Guillaume Desbiens
Victor Oreskovich
Jeff Tambellini
Sergei Shirokov
Cody Hodgson
Jordan Schroeder
Joel Perrault

Lot of teams have a pretty good shot

Binghamton’s gotten a huge youth infusion from Ottawa. They’re not favourites, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they did pretty well.

But jeez, that’s a lot of bodies going for a small number of spots.

I was joking… kinda. I’m not too up on my AHL knowledge. My point is more that Gillis really seems to be keen to bring in as many players as possible. That is quite the list of of players battling for 6 spots.

It should be pretty competitive…

Yup!

Small point is that someone like Malhotra (should he want to flip to wing), Hodgson, Shirok or possibly Schroeder needs to step into the top six for Burrows while he remains on LTIR.

But yeah, there’s a lot of humanity there. Perhaps a trade is coming that bundles some of these lads (for what and what I haven’t the foggiest)

Bonus: one-way deals

Via CapGeek, the one-way deals on the team are: Daniel Sedin, Henrik Sedin, Ryan Kesler, Mason Raymond, Manny Malholtra, Mikael Samuelsson, Alex Burrows, Jannik Hansen, Darcy Hordichuk, Tanner Glass, Rick Rypien, Joel Perrault.

That’s 12 guys. If Torres is indeed a one-way deal, that means 13 forwards on one-ways. So unless someone like Hordichuk or Glass get waived, poor guys like Tambellini and every prospect in the system are going to be chilling in Winnipeg most of the season.

Out of those, you have to think Hordy, Perrault and maybe Glass are in the danger zone.

I am just digging how great camp will be. They seem sincere in saying the youngsters get a fair shot…and that means guys that earn jobs get jobs.

The others can get dealt with.

But the best guy getting the job is working.

If he stays healthy and has a decent centerman, I think Torres should be fine. But that decent center may as well be Malhotra with the list of remaining options.

If true the third line flipped from Bernier/Wellwood/Hansen to Torres/Malhotra/Hansen. It’s a step in the right direction.

That was..

exactly my thought when I realized that we reached 49 players with this signing. Bieksa is gone and taking someone with him. And right now, I would probably put my money on Hansen. Although people will be quick to say we just re-signed him, the fact of the matter is we had no choice due to arbitration rules. Although remember Gillis stating that he was happy with the cap hit, I still believe that Hansen may be the one to be moved.

I don’t want to go look for the exact thread or anything, but I have been throwing him in rosterbation deals for a while now.

Haha don't get me wrong or anything,

Hordichuk is the first player I would want to get rid of. But its a tough sell.

I agree with vancitydan, I like Hansen as a player and I really think he could prosper with regular minutes and the right linemates. I’m actually not a fan of the Torres signing, but I’m trying to take into consideration all that has been said in the comments and perhaps I’ll change my mind about it in the coming days. But now that we have Torres, its likely he will be our new third line winger.

As such, I don’t think Hansen is suited on the 4th line, and we know that he doesn’t want to consider a demotion to the AHL. He has trade value, unlike Hordichuk, which is why I’d probably consider him the player to be singled out. I could be wrong, I hope I’m wrong, but that’s just my opinion on it, which is why I agreed with Sean in the first place.

by DD WEST on Aug 25, 2010 12:53 AM PDT up reply actions

Bieksa should get more return, even with Blackout!

Hansen would be much more desirable to another team than Hordy. It seems that his job will be done by committee, with Rypper the main eventer. Or, for some of the big boys, my other fave “lesser” addition 6’3", 215 "Victor K_Oreskovic.

by vancitydan on Aug 25, 2010 12:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah exactly, and again I agree with you vancity, I expect Victor Oreskovich to surprise a lot of people, and become a fan fave pretty quick. I would compare him roughly to Matt Cooke… maybe, with a more size, grit, and hitting potential, but less offensive potential. Essentially, a consistent big hitter/energy player.

I tried with this post to put some Youtube videos in, but for some reason they didn’t take.

Just go to Youtube and type in his name though. Lots of big hits.

The guy has a talent for getting in on the defensemen in an expeditious manner, and arrives with some pretty impressive hits.

Hopefully he does the same here. I like the idea of getting back into the game after quitting and going back to school and getting his degree. Fits in well with GMMG’s idea of getting smart guys ( Billy Sweatt another sheepskin wielding player )…and it seems to me that he will want it even more now.

Hopefully.

That number

…does concern me a bit, but it does show what an advantage wealthy teams have, even in a cap era.

I don’t know if Hansen’s going – I’d rather he didn’t – but it’s certainly possible. I don’t know what he’d bring in return, though: he hasn’t yet played a full season. Bieksa is going first, and I still don’t think he’ll be bringing any players back, just picks.

by Thursday on Aug 25, 2010 1:05 AM PDT up reply actions

I look at it more in the two for one kind of deal. Just like GMMG asked for V.O in the Ballard deal.

Bieksa is the centrepiece, and instead of two players back, a combo of a roster player and perhaps a pick or prospect of some type.

Bieksa and Hansen for Chimera and a 1st. ;-)

by vancitydan on Aug 25, 2010 1:10 AM PDT up reply actions

I was gonna reply to this too

but again vancity, you beat me too it. I think Hansen will be part of the Bieksa trade, to net us a higher return. Except I think its probably a prospect and a pick, instead of a roster player, since we already signed Torres. The signing pretty much shores up the roster and I cant see MG trading for yet another 3rd liner. But again, I could be wrong.

Best case scenario, we throw in Hordichuk and do a 3 for 1 trade+picks, but I’m not sure how realistic that is.

Gillis did say very seriously at the Draft that they felt the next one was really deep and wanted to get more picks.

by vancitydan on Aug 25, 2010 1:25 AM PDT up reply actions

All reports indicate a strong draft year coming up, and since the Canucks have no intention of picking earlier than 30th any way, we might as well stock up on other teams’, right? 8)

Still not convinced Hansen’s going, but it wouldn’t shock me if he did. Heck, someone’s got to! Just for the price, is he the first choice?

Now watch this be “just a rumour” and didn’t actually happen!

What, Raffi Cavoukian wasn't available?

“Baby Baloooooga…”

Hey, he’d come with his own theme song, and it’d fit with the team, too!

On a less children’s-entertainer-oriented theme, he got 20 goals in 74 games where he only got 13:30 of ice time last year. He plays an aggressive game, which got him into injury trouble two and three years ago, but he had a pretty good health record the two seasons before that. Plus, as much as he’s banger, he picks up few penalty minutes. A bit of a surprise, given he’s not a very fast guy.

So: kinda slow, loves corners, does well on the power play, often injured.

Think I’d rather keep Hansen.

I feel like

he’s got the cup experience, so in that case he wins over Hansen. Not too old either.

Hansen...

…is younger, cheaper, faster, and can play either wing. Plus he’s a home grown late-round pick, which I’ve got a soft spot for.

I like Torres: he’s solid on the puck, has proven (if erratic) NHL finish. But if it were down to choosing between the two, ’ll go with the Great Dane. Now, if he can learn not to punch helmets, he will have a better injury history, too! 8)

He does have some value though right?

I agree with all of that, I like the player too, but its not like we don’t have a lot of players of his size and style.

Torres is my pick, just because of being a vet.

Plus, he does play a more robust game. I have seen Beaker bounce off his checks a lot more than I have seen Torres.

He seems more the hammer than the nail.

That’s an… interesting… name there, ILB. Welcome to Nucks Misconduct!

In any case, this signing shores up the left side, meaning he’s more likely to take Hordichuk or Glass out (I think we all know who’s preferred of those two) than Hansen, so I was wrong with that assumption. Torres was supposed to be one of the players to lead Edmonton back to regular playoff appearances, and while he never quite developed into as dangerous a player as hoped, he’s certainly worthy of third line ice time, which seems to be where he’s played his entire career.

The biggest down side (if he can stay healthy, that is) I can see with him is that he’s a very streaky scorer – 3 of his 4 assists in Buffalo came in one game – but over all I’m frankly okay with this pick-up. Yeah, he played for Edmonton, get over it.

By all accounts

This is exactly the opposite of his reputation.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

I always hated him when he played against us, so maybe I’ll love him when he plays for us. If he brings a physical, nasty presence to the third line and 15+ goals, I’ll be happy. I’m going to cautiously hope that he compliments Malhotra’s style of play.

As far as I can tell

This is basically a slightly more expensive and slightly better version of Asham without the ridiculous playoff run Asham had.

Seems like a reasonable move to me. I think he

I gotta say though, this signing makes Torres the most logical option to fill in a top 6 spot while Burr is out. He did score 19 goals in 60 games in the Western Conference last year, playing 13 minutes per game, and playing in a division that includes Detroit, Chicago, and Nashville.

Hodgson/Schroeder need to impress at camp to a degree that would be very unlikely in order to earn such a spot on opening day. Malholtra makes way more sense as the anchor of line 3. Hansen hasn’t shown that he’s top 6, although yoata would argue that’s because GMMG and AV don’t give him a shot. And it would be hard to take Shirikov seriously right out of camp after what happened last year. So I think Torres is the most likely to be annointed, should there be no other additions. Dude scored 19 goals last year.

ooh, interesting thought. highly doubt he’d go with the sedins, but he might be able to work with kes and mayray….

Yeah I think based on last year, Son of Sam is the obvious choice for Sedins with Burr out. But I think he makes more sense than our other options with Kes and Mayray if the primary purpose of that line is offense, which it obviously is and should be.

I actually like this signing a fair bit.

Mainly because it’s a cheap, short-term deal but also because it ups the team’s 3rd line grit factor and scoring. I’d be happy with 12-15 goals and 30 points.
