August 2nd Frozen Squid
Hope everyone enjoyed their weekend, and I especially hope those of you in BC are still enjoying the long weekend. Here are some Monday morning signings:
- Update (7:15 PM): Ducks have signed towering D-man free agent Andy Sutton.
- Update (4:50 PM): The Sabres have signed free agent Shaone Morrisonn, according to the team's Twitter page.
- As Sean reported last night (and I can now confirm), the Blackhawks have walked away from Antti Niemi and signed Marty Turco to a 1-year contract. *EDIT: Beantown Canuck has a "Where Will Niemi End Up?" pool HERE.
- The Blues have signed Erik Johnson to a 2-year deal.
- The Thrashers have traded Todd White to the Rangers for Donald Brashear and Patrick Rissmiller. Meanwhile, Atlanta's official blogger says that Brashear will be bought out.
Open topic for today: According to this tweet, Niemi's agent has already been approached by 5 teams after the Hawks walked away. Where do you think Niemi will end up?

Even though I don’t want him in the NW, I think he’d look great on a young team like Edmonton (if they can drop Khabby somehow). The Caps may not be a bad idea (though I don’t know their cap status) and maybe Steve Y will take a look at him (Ellis and Niemi would be badass, but what to do with Smith?).

Caps currently could afford him, assuming his price as a UFA isn’t sky-high… however the going logic is that they need to focus on getting better d-men.

Varlamov has no back up though, right? Toss Niemi in there for some healthy competition and maybe wait until camp to see what defenders are left (or, you know, trade for that Bieksa guy…we’ll throw in Salo for free!).

they have Neuvirth, who will likely get the bump up from Hershey.

Caps have their defensemen. Problem is they’re relatively inexperienced at the NHL level.

I’m not sure if Niemi, behind Green, Poti, Alzner, Schultz, Erskine and Carlson, rather than Keith, Seabrook, Campbell, Hjarmalson, Sopel and Hendry, is much of an improvement for the Caps over Varlamov.
If you ask me, it would better to spend $3 mill to upgrade one of those d-men.

And now the hate can flow through you
Man the team I hate so much (but not as much as the flames) now has the goalie I hate. Bloody Turco and his passing crap. Every time I see him stick handle I pray for a forward to lose their mind and obliterate him… Just once.
I believe that’s one of the few positive Blackout moments.

Lozo from NHL.com names Washington, San Jose, Dallas, Atlanta, Montreal and Philly as possible landing spots for Niemi.

Didn’t Dallas just get Lehtonen to replace Turco? That’d be strange.
by Beantown Canuck on Aug 2, 2010 11:13 AM PDT up reply actions
yep
they also have Raycroft, who gets no love in that article. they’re assuming that Lehtonen gets injured again, and saying that Raycroft hasn’t been good for years.

Razor will prove them all wrong again this season!
Is it just me or did the Canucks play more responsibly when he was in net?
sometimes they did. a few times, they left him out to dry.

I actually observed quite the opposite, although I didn’t see every game he started.

It would be nice to have insurance just in case Splodeygroin spends more time on the IR than on the ice.

Yet with all that interest they let him walk?
I don’t get that part. Surely Niemi would have brought something better than a bag of pucks.
Sign Turco sure ( it makes the rivalry even more fun! )…but why let a valued asset walk for SFA?
Yeah, not sure why they didn’t try it either. Unless their just don’t want to risk getting stuck with Niemi and Huet once camp rolls around.

I can’t see them getting stuck though. Even trading him for something like a 4th round pick is better than nothing. They have two months to make it happen.
Oh well…not my team…
;-)
Yeah but look at the goalie market…there’s still some bodies bouncing out there and they’re not catching on either. Budgets get tighter as camp closes in so it would have been a good chance they would have been stuck.

Just reading the blogs this morning.
I know its the fan’s interest, not the management, but it seems that most fans of teams are looking at their goalies and going “yeah…Niemi at 3 mil would be better than THIS guy”.
But yeah, I guess they wanted the finality, and not allowing the other GMs to play with their heads…
Yeah, they should be able to the remainder of their roster under the cap now.
And it’s not like Turco makes them worse. He should be dependable behind that defense.

Niemi goes to Detroit or Edmonton.
Now this is a bit off topic, but the N. Korean team has been punished for their WC failures…remember when we joked about this? Totalitarian states don’t fuck around.
Also, probably a good call on STL’s part to sign EJ.

Well
they do go away, they get sent to volunteer work camps. But yeah, Kim Jong Il is pretty much pure evil, and he represents the one exception in which I would be okay with political assassinations.

Losing Kimmy wouldn’t help though…the whole system needs to change.
One of his sons becomes the figurehead, and generals ( of a million plus army that is very well armed ) are the power.
They need to learn that threats don’t get concessions like usual. If they try to follow through on their threats…there has to be costs.
Though, now that China has started to back away form them politically, maybe real change can happen.
All they have to do is look South to see what their people could enjoy as a standard of life!
Oops…off topic indeed.
Turco is a good deal at 1.3.
;-)
Yes
Their kind of system does mean that to simply cut off the head of the snake would not be enough. Perhaps a coup? Or a civilian-wide uprising/revolution? Or have the N. Korean people been so badly mistreated for so long that they wouldn’t even know how to revolt?

Or have the N. Korean people been so badly mistreated for so long that they wouldn’t even know how to revolt? In a word, yes. In a bunch of words, it’s difficult to fight when all your time is spent slowly starving to death.
That and the lifelong brainwashing that goes on there: textbooks actually teach that when Kim Jong-Il was born, rainbows spontaneously appeared and cherry trees went into bloom. Textbooks.
Kim also spread information about a “wonder drug” being dispensed in Pyongyang that made short people taller: when short people showed up, they were rounded up and sent to island work camps so their “substandard genes” would no longer “contaminate” North Korea. This coming from a 5’3" nutbag.
So no, I don’t thin a revolution is coming any time soon.
It was
a good post nonetheless. Kim is, for lack of a better word, insane.

The thing is though
that people who are starving aren’t just going to roll over and die. If it gets bad enough there something will have to happen one way or another. Eventually someone or some group of people will rise up it’s just a question of when and how long it takes and if it’s successful or not.
