August 10th Open Ice
A few news items to get your day going:
- The Fourth Period takes a look at Vancouver's off season.
- A Detroit newspaper focuses in on Ryan Kesler and NHL 2K11.
- As mentioned yesterday, there are some changes to the Team 1040 line up that are pretty positive (especially Matt Sekeres, one of the better Vancouver insiders around).
- The KB guys look at where Pudge, Balls and Mitchell may end up.
- Head To The Net had a good birthday curfew letter posted for Shane O'Brien.
- Definitely check out nucksandpucks piece on "Five reasons I Love the Canucks". Mysteriously missing: Tommy Santala.
- Lastly, there's something about Kovalchuk, circumnavigation and the Luongo deal you may have heard about. Beantown is available for council for the low, low price of your first born child.
To piggyback off of nucksandpucks, feel free to name the top four most influential non-players in Canucks history; basically the good and the bad GMs, coaches, owners and water boys that spring to mind.
Go ahead. Be brutal.

That game was men against boys. Sort of felt bad for Kipper after that one.

Considering I think it also won TSN’s play of the year and NHL.com’s play of the year… I’m not surprised it would win Canucks.com’s as well! In second place my guess would be Lu’s crazy flailing glove save game 6 vs. the Kings?

no, the competition in the last round was burrows’s back-2-back hatties.

Well that’s kind of a cheat. Getting a hatty, or getting back to back hatty’s, is not a play, it’s a sequence of strong plays. If you’re going to allow that, I would argue the ‘play of the year’ should be Henrik Sedin setting the Canuck single season point record and winning the Art Ross!

Yeah I’m debating if Keenan makes the cut. He was so destructive and yet helpful at the same time.
Got no complaints with the rest of the list.

When we see what Ballard, Hamhuis, Malholtra, Schroeder and Hodgson have to offer… on top of Sammuelsson and Ehrhoff… then Gillis may well make his case to join the list too. But right now he’s had less of an impact than any of those guys on my list.

My Top 4
1. Frank/Arthur Griffiths
2. Pat Quinn
3. Brian Burke
4. Sean Zandberg and Yankee Canuck
4. Mike Keenan (unfortunately)
My list is almost identical to Beantown’s. Hard to argue against the major owners, coach/GM combos or the pugnacious one himself. Also, between the three of them, Burke/Quinn/Keenan were responsible for bringing in a huge number of key players: the Sedins, Naslund, Geoff Courtnall, Jeff Brown, Ronning, Messier (ugh), Mogilny, Bertuzzi; etc.

If you’re including Quinn, how can you not mention:
Bure
Linden
McLean
Adams
Lumme
If you’re including Burke, how can you not mention:
Kesler
Morrison
…and Linden part II
by Beantown Canuck on Aug 10, 2010 11:22 AM PDT up reply actions
To be honest I was too lazy to go back and check when he actually came on board (1988 maybe?). So I wasn’t sure about some of the late-80s acquisitions – e.g. Bure, Linden, Mclean, etc. And yeah, good point about Kesler, Morrison, and Linden Redux. It wasn’t meant to be an exhaustive list by any stretch. Ohlund should be on that list too.
Though if we’re going to give Quinn credit for great picks like Bure and Linden, is it fair to dredge up draft duds like Jason Herter, Alex Stojanov, Shawn Antoski and Josh Holden?

by Beantown Canuck on Aug 10, 2010 11:49 AM PDT up reply actions
Yep, you’re right for sure. Though the Sedins are particularly epic for the wrangling it took to get both picks (not to mention avoiding the landmines that were Patrick Stefan and Pavel Brendl!). This thread is sparking a couple of other when-the-hell-is-the-season-going-to-start type lists: best trades in Canucks history; and best draft picks in Nucks history. Could make for some fun debate.

Burke traded McCabe to get the other Sedin and we all know how we got McCabe in the first place right? From Keenan flogging Linden to New York. Long live Iron Mike!

And I agree with Beantown, give MG a few more years and he might actually break into the top 4. I was totally against his hiring at the time. But since then, most of his moves have been pretty good. He changed the dynamic of our franchise for the positive, and deserves credit for improving drafting, player development, and the facilities. He has improved the marketability of the franchise to free agents, while also being fiscally responsible in regards to the cap and future salary.
Yeah
brace for impact my friend.

Hahahah yeah, I know he’s an MG hater. And , while good, MG is far from being a great GM, he’s been as good as he’s been lucky. MG has faults, but I still think he’s had a positive impact on the franchise.
I’m open to debate and others opinions. Who knows, maybe he’ll convince me to change mine :)
