Report: Blackhawks Sign Marty Turco
The Score and WGN in Chicago are reporting Turco has signed a 1 year $1.75 million deal with Chicago, meaning the Hawks will part with Antii Niemi (or blow up Huet's car with him in it.)
What do you think? Upgrade? I'd think Turco will play well in front of a good team that pays attention to defence.
UPDATE: A FALSE REPORT APPARENTLY.

I don’t quite understand the arbitration process. I thought Niemi got 2.75mill with the Hawks and that meant he was staying there?
They’d most likely walk away, I doubt they’d be douche-y enough to sign-and-trade him.

I don’t think that’s douche-y. Niemi asked for this possibility by choosing to go into arbitration. In fact, if they don’t go that root, who knows if anyone offers Niemi $2.75 per at all. Certainly none of the top teams will… the only good teams that can afford that kind of salary pickup already have better goaltenders. Well, maybe Washington?

Why they would let the asset go for nothing.
If they sign Turco, they will still take Niemi and trade him…to Washington,SJ or another team.
Edmonton
would seem the best fit.

Is Kabibulin behind bars? Or in a ditch somewhere and not know where he is?

Edmonton would be a great fit for Niemi, especially with their double D back-ups in the mix. A triple threat instead of relying on Khabby to get healthy and find his game.

Yeah
The Rangers WOULD get an old one-season-wonder hockey player instead of signing a very good young player.

For the record, Turco is 18 – 7 – 2 against Vancouver. Granted many of those were when the Stars were a better team, but whatever…that’s a dominant record. He’ll be no slouch behind Campbell, Keith, Hlaaammamamamarson and Seabrook.

And .950 sv%, 1.30 gaa, and 3 shutouts in 7 games in the playoffs against us too.

Got to thank the Sharks for some of this; that Hjalmarsson offer really stole about $1-$1.5 million from their cap. If they had that, they’d probably have Niemi.

Yeah, but we still won that series.

No it was Luongo's
Taking stats from that series are useless. The Canucks were almost the opposite of what they are now. They were playing a heavy defense first system and the players that are still on the team hadn’t blossomed into the point getters they have become.
Yeah but a .950 sv% doesn’t lie. Did you watch that series? Remember that crazy long OT game where Lu faced 70+ shots? There was some mighty fine goaltending on both ends of the ice that series.

Agreed...kinda
I, of course watched that series. A great series and indeed mighty fine goaltending, including from Turco. All i’m saying is the numbers are a lot misleading. That version of the Canucks were not built to score goals and in fact were built to score first and sit on leads. You’ll also remember that the canucks set records in that series for shots against. At the end of the day, one series (especially one that a goalie lost) is too small a sample size for a stat like save % to be relevant.
Ok… how about the more recent 2007-2008 playoffs, the last time the Stars made the playoffs, where he took his team to the Western Conference Finals (something we’ve not done since 1994), sporting a .920 sv% and a 2.08 GAA?

What are getting at?
I was never saying that Turco was a bad goalie. I was trying to say that bringing up the fact that Turco got 3 shutouts or a 950 save % in a series in 2007 against the canucks isn’t relevent, and it’s not. At all.
If you’re point is that Turco has had some success in the NHL, I agree. Although I would say he is getting further from that success all the time. Personally I think it was a good move by the Blackhawks but what concerns/annoys me the most about Turco is not the way he saves the puck but how he plays it like a third d man. You remember how annoying it is the way he shields the puck with his body from forecheckers? God I hate that.
i just woke up and checked Twitter, NHL.com is reporting it as true.
there’s been a couple other signings as well, i’ll throw up a frozen Squid right now.

That’s 10 players….. so far. Looks like they are done, though.
But considering only 20 players dress per game… wow. That’s half a roster gone gone gone.

Not a bad move
Detroit’s won several championships and been a perpetual contender with budget goalies who seem to step up in the playoffs. Turco had a decent season by playing fewer games than when he was younger last season, so maybe Chicago will continue that trend. Who’s their backup going to be? Huet?
Ha, they can’t afford to keep that contract. Crawford probably. Or Toivonen.

Turco
Signing in Chicago is a SMART move by Turco. He knows it’s a crappy year to be a free agent goalie, and what better way to up your stats for the following season than to play dirt-cheap for the defending Stanley Cup champions, behind an All-Star defense pairing of Keith-Seabrook, on a team that allows the lowest shots against in the league? Always liked Turco, never blamed the Stars failures in the playoffs on him (how can you when your leading goal scorer is Stephane Robidas with two goals?).
