Wouldn't the karmic kismet of this be just perfect?
Steve Kouleas is saying that the Hawks walk away from Niemi if he makes anything over 1.5. Seems they have Turco in their back pocket signed to a 1.5 nil, 1 year deal.
I have to say I love the "just feels right" of that. If there is an opposing goalie Luongo gets up for, it might be Marty Turco, especially after the whiny little episode with the flaps on the pads from a while back.
Roberto Luongo breaking his Hawk's "thing" against Marty would be fun. I don't have the numbers at hand, but I remember them mentioning that Turco's stats against the 'Nucks are in our favour on one of the broadcasts, so there is that!
All kidding aside, Marty backing up that team could and would be pretty dangerous...that is excellent bang for the buck...1.5 MIL??

I thought Turco and Crawford…isn’t sending Huet to the minors the magic Cap panacea for the Hawks?
I mean, they are over now, and have to sign 2 goalies if he walks…Crawford makes what Niemi used to, and almost beat him out for the position last year.
It should be interesting to see what Bowman does…it’s almost like an offseason soap opera…
;-)
Oh yeah
I forgot about Huet.

Turco played really really well against us that first Luongo playoff year. Really really well. If he had Toews, Kane, Hossa, Keith, Seabrook in front of him, instead of collection of decent to good but unspectacular spare parts, no way we would have won that series. Turco is probably better than Niemi right now, so no way in heck I’d get excited about this. I’d much prefer if they got Theodore, he of one good season ten years ago.

Yep
gotta be the only tender in history to get 3 shutouts in a series and still lose the series.

Bean’,,,I have been looking for it, but am not finding the right site.
However, I am pretty sure that he has a bad record against the Canucks.
Lui gets up for games against the guy.
I forgot that some of us have taken to making this spectacular Hawk core into some kinds of Gods on Earth.
Not me. Without their depth, I think the Canucks are the better team.
And Turco’s best days are behind him…but that is just me. No way he is as good as Niemi right now. That line of thinking that Hawk fans are clinging to that it doesn’t matter the goalie against that team is nonsense too. Niemi was a big part of their success…
My main point was that it would be somehow just “right” against Turco if Lui finally got over the hump against the team that gives him trouble.
Just me though…I am one that thinks the Hawks are not going to have a superb season next year with all the changes…young stars or no. I don’t think they win the Central, for instance….hey…we could have one of those fun bets that Chuckles and Sean have!
;-)
Well with Hudler back and assuming they don’t get a freak amount of injuries to players like Franzen, Filppula, Holmstrom, Cleary and Kronwall, I would fully expect Detroit to give Chicago a run for their money in the Central, as they would have last year had all the above listed occurrences not be the case.
That being said, I expect Chicago to remain among the top teams in the West, along with the Canucks, Sharks and Red Wings.
Whether or not Turco is past his prime is a seperate question, I know he’s been off but I also think the Stars have gotten significantly weaker over the past few years. But like I said, Turco was excellent against us the one time we faced him in the playoffs. Probably the best goalie we’ve faced in the playoffs post-lockout.

I totally agree on Turco…was really just ahving some fun.
Though it would just seem proper to have him in net when Luongo finally gets over that hump.
I see the Hawks being the team we face in the most epic of 1st rounds…finishing 5 or 6.
Look out for Nashville in the Central too…St Loo will steal some points from the top on the back of Halak.
It is probably the toughest division in the West, (maybe the Pacific actually…depending )…
In that one series, he had great stats, but Luongo was better because he won. If we can get Lui playing at that level or even close to it this year…I’ll be a very happy Canuck fan.
I want to get over this myth that proof of being the better goalie is that you win the game. It takes a team. Turco was the better goalie that series. That’s not a knock on Lu, he was also excellent. But the fact was, Lu won some games in that series when he let goals in… Turco didn’t have that luxury because of his shit-offense team.
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 31, 2010 7:34 PM PDT up reply actions
True dat. I have been saying for years that GAA is a team game.
By the most basic definition of the job of goalie, winning should be a stat that matters too.
Grant Fuhr’s myth is about how he won when it mattered..not so much his GAA and sv %….you know?
Now, if our boy could produce like his boyhood idol…wouldn’t that be nice!
Winning, quite frankly, is no more than a signal that the goalie is good enough to let in one less goal than his team scores. A spectacular goalie can win many game if his offense can score just one goal. A shitty goalie on an offensively average team who lets in 15% of shots will win most games if his D can hold the other team to 15 shots.
The only thing a ‘win’ tells you, without knowing any other details, is that the team as a whole scored more goals than the opposition. That’s it. How that came to be requires more info.

Basically, good ‘W’ numbers, without any other context, is just evidence that a goalie is adequate.

Turco’s stats from the 2006/7 playoffs (aka first round vs the Canucks):
3-4 record… 0.950 sv%, 1.30 GAA, 3 Shutouts.
Those numbers scare me. But I do remember that Trevor Linden goal that just barely squeaked in… oh that was a thing of joy.

I would much rather
have them not sign Niemi or Turco at all and run a tandem of Crawford and Huet. Niemi has been awarded 2.75 mill…so we’ll see what happens.

wait - so does Turco suck against the Canucks too or not?
I’m already preparing myself for some 4-goal games against the Wings in the Joe this year. I don’t think I can handle terrible losses against the Canucks too, goddammit.
But when it was suggested to him that Toews v. Kane seems likely to become a sidebar to every future international hockey tournament, he smiled and said: "I'd like us to win something together, too." -- 2/28/10, so our Captain has said, and so it was done.

No…one of the guys said his record against the Canucks is great…14-7 or something like that.
Him at the other end will/should add more motivation to Lui though.
I am pretty sure they don’t care much for one another after Turco accused him of cheating for the same flaps on Lui’s pads that Marty had himself!
whew
is all I can say. Fingers crossed on that. If there’s any team I’d hate this year’s Hawks to lose to, it’ll be yours.
