not really. he noticed the Nucks Misconduct title, then saw “Vancouver Canucks hockey blog” in the comments, and he jokingly said i was hired after i confirmed i was a Canucks fan.
turns out, he’s also a Canucks fan, and actually spent a few years stranded in Saskatchewan without any canucks games.

This question is not easily answerable

without more context… best song from a musical, a writing, a lyrical, a danceability, a humorous, a mathematical compositional, a change my life, or most fit my personal human condition standpoint? Cuz they’re all different… Although beantown’s choice is pretty good in a bunch of those categories… Not indicating what they’re best at or who they’re by, here are some of mine in no particular order:

Smells like teen spirit
Jambi
Wish you were here
Hurt
Stairway to Heaven
Sonata No.8 (Pathetique)
Bohemian Rhapsody
Paranoid Android
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds
46 and 2
Machine Gun

i wanted to play Moonlight, but my grandmother (she taught me for my first 8 years) always told me it was too advanced. when i got to a new teacher (my grandmother retired) and i said i wanted to learn it, she told me i had already passed that level.
i completed my grade 10 (including all the theory) back in 2007. i’m on my AR right now, but it hit the backburner when i went off to university.

I think Laak’s always been a bit manic. Maybe sometimes he shows it more than other times, but I don’t think his personality fundamentally changes, although his mood might. I used to love his schtick, but it’s really gotten tired for me. Also, anytime u see him on PAD or HSP, he is SOOOO out-classed by everyone else at the table it’s almost funny to watch. He gets the shows cuz he’s entertaining, and also his girlfriend has really taught him how to create a public image well. I don’t know that he’s changed much over the years, just maybe the saturation is allowing you to see all sides of him?

But I’m going with the Man in Black on versions, even over the Frog in Green. I think he brings a real richness to the song that I don’t find in Reznor’s version. I love the bare bones sound, too: he’s alone, and it’s all through the song that it’s a man who is not only going over his own history but is warning others who may want to be close to him to stay away. Marvellous stuff.

My opinion, of course.

True enough

I like that version more when it ends, too! (Yes, I kid.)

Really, this is the first time I’ve ever heard of people who prefer Reznor’s track to Cash. I think there’s a real sense of time served with Cash that NIN doesn’t provide. So I guess we’re looking for different things from the song.

by DD WEST on Jul 29, 2010 8:45 PM PDT up reply actions

Really not true though. As an owner of an iPhone 3, user of an iPhone 4, and user of Android. From a techie perspective, Android is the superior operating system.

If you’re going for look, if you’re going for that indefinable “feel”, that’s Apple. They are kings of UI. But functionality, adaptability, usefulness… that’s open source. Every time.

But as I said, Rogers and Telus, the top providers in the Vancouver area, have awful Android phones. You basically have to shell out for and accept Bell or VIrgin Mobile for what they are. Which if tough if you’ve got an existing contract.

With Android, much of the time you’re waiting for firmware upgrades that may or may not come. As a user of an HTC Dream, that update will never come from Rogers. But I’m in a position to “upgrade” to an HTC Magic (actually a downgrade) just to get 2.0. Realistically, you benefit much more from Android in the US of A.

by ShiftySC on Jul 29, 2010 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions

Ive never used an Android so I cant really comment as to which is better from personal experience, but over the past month I’ve been following reviews and in most cases, the iPhone came in slightly better than Android. Most of these comparisons came against the HTC Evo, which is considered the top phone for Android with the worst battery.

And your absolutely right, both phones are amazing, and better than the other at certain aspects. It simply comes down to what the customer is looking for.

by DD WEST on Jul 29, 2010 9:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Yeah I can tweak my phone pretty well, and in the usefulness department (ie. what normal folk can develop and install on android phones) Android definitely comes out on top.

If you’re looking for a no-issue phone that looks good while doing it (and has no reception at other times) then the iPhone is the go-to.

Yeah but Android also has security issues with apps, just recently over a million users had their personal data compromised. Plus, once you jailbreak the iPhone, you can get some pretty useful stuff as well from Cydia.

by DD WEST on Jul 29, 2010 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions

When you root iPhones you open yourself up to similar problems. Security issues pop up from faulty apps either way. With Android, you’re (somewhat) open to start with and with iOS you’re basically boned until you do. There’s no real security issues if you know what you’re doing with either OS.

Let's see here

Late to the party again, and I don’t know if you can these “the best song(s) ever”, but they’re the best for me

Dire Straits – Brothers in Arms
Live – Lightning Crashes
Red Hot Chili Peppers – Under the Bridge
Queen – Radio Ga Ga
Velvet Revolver – Slither

I would never turn down listening to those. Slither may seem out of place, but hot damn it’s the only workout song that never gets old. I burn through so many songs while working out that I can’t listen to again, but Slither will always get me going, and I never hate to hear it come on the random playlist.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they changed pop music. I reference the Bon Jovi comment. I just didn’t listen to pop then and I rarely do now. It’s a peripheral brilliance for what they brought to the music scene. Not what they created, which is pretty average.

Sorry, gotta disagree with you. I really like their music and find it coarse and intimate and very interestingly assembled.

Why not listen to pop music? Is there a specific aspect you avoid, or instruments, or what? I listen to pretty much whatever doesn’t bore me or make me itch, but there are few performers that I’ll knock family members aside to change the station when they come on. Bryan Adams is certainly one, but to each their own.

I don’t avoid it, I just rarely find anything I like on the radio. Although radio is getting lot better around here. And when I say pop I do mean just popular music, not any particular genre or King Of.

I think with Nirvana my problem is that anyone could write it. The reason I still appreciate them is that only one band did write it, and they were figureheads of a movement toward better music even if I didn’t love theirs. They also kickstarted the career of one of the best rock drummers of our time, who went on to create 3 much better albums before giving into his Dad phase.

Are you on crack? ANYONE could write it???? There’s been maybe 5 people in rock history with that kind of gift for a hook, relevance and timelessness combined… and I don’t know that I could personally even think of 5. Cobain, Lennon those are the obvious two… maybe Mick Jagger (who by the way had is 893rd birthday yesterday)? Who else? I wanna say Elvis Costello, but then I don’t think he ever got the hook like Lennon and Cobain did.

The ability to throw together a song the way Nirvana did comes along once in a generation if we’re lucky.

CAMPGROUND FULL. Fuck.

But is it not true that the music is simplistic? I don’t think you can argue that what is essentially a four chord song is brilliant. The next sentence was the most important one to quote: “The reason I still appreciate them is that only one band did write it”.

You’re right in that the masses wanted what Cobain created, but I think you’re kind of kidding yourself if you think that that is indicative of unique, one-of-a-kind music. Yes, Teen Spirit hit on that deep-set, youthful need to listen to something that parents didn’t like. But it was as much Nirvana’s image as it was the music. Remember how many women found his dirty golden locks to be attractive and how many moms didn’t? Remember how huge the music video was?

The hook and relevance, of course they had those. They had a generation who wanted different and they packaged different flawlessly for the time. I’d give more credit to Cobain than to say that he tried to create something popular, obviously. It just happened to be.

As for timelessness, I can’t understand that at all. It simply isn’t good enough for that. I think Nirvana will always be remembered for a) what they did to change music (note: not for great music), b) what youth remember doing when they listened to Nirvana and c) the shock of Cobain’s death. And I think in 50 years people will remember the Beatles and the Stones for the quality of their music, which will still floating around movie trailers, as well as other things.

Well I think we differ on a few things here. First off, let me say that Nirvana does not fall into my list of all time favorite bands, I’m not a nutbag fanatic because Cobain died, although his death was probably the only celebrity death that ever made me pause…but that’s a whole other story and more symbolic than associative. No, they never grabbed me on a musically intellectual level. But… just because something is easy to play doesn’t make it bad. Nirvana’s song skills weren’t in writing finely crafted songs a la sting or mathematically intense songs like tool or operatic genius like queen or symphonic masterpieces like Frank Zappa. What Nirvana did, and the beatles before them and I guess elvis too (although he didn’t actually write alot of his songs, he just performed them incredibly well) is that they speak to us in a very visceral sense; the base emotion is touched and that string is plucked, and this is not a skill that can be taught or a result of a formula.

No, I don’t believe Nirvana was big because of their image; exactly the opposite actually, I believe their image became a standard because they were big. And I think if you speak to any songwriter they’ll tell you that yes, Cobain is among the special elite of songsmiths who captured something no one else could. There is no obvious explanation for why some writers can touch this. The other thing he did that was groundbreaking is brought songwriting back from this mathematical formula to this primitive emotional free association. It wasn’t just the music or the lyrics or the melody or the phrasing, it was the sum total of those things. It equaled more than it’s parts. It’s a very intangible thing, but it’s there in a very few artists.

I don’t know what makes a particular song great, other than by my own emotional reaction, and if I did i’d be a millionaire. I do know that even though there are tons of artists who can write good songs, a bunch that can write great ones, but very very few who can transcend genres like that. To me the proof was when Unplugged came out and all of a sudden parents and popsters were talking about how much they liked it. I heard many years ago that the acid test for how good a song is as a song is whether it can be as attractive and enjoyable stripped down to an acoustic guitar or piano and singer. Like Hurt, for example. Johnny Cash could not have made Closer work the way Hurt did, because Hurt is a more visceral and instinctual song.

Again, as I said, I wasn’t even a huge Nirvana fan…my favorite Seattle bands were Soundgarden by far, with Alice in Chains a distant second.

Of course this is all subjective in the end…it is after all, art. Some people like coldplay, some don’t. Neither is wrong. (except the coldplay fans…)

Um, I was just commenting on the quality of the songwriting. If we agree that it’s nothing special and that the music captured the minds of youth… wait what’s going on?

I also don’t consider early Beatles “good music”, because it was just catchy music that appealed to young girls. But there is genius in their later works, which admittedly we never got the chance to see from Cobain, but is largely absent from Nirvana’s small catalog. Beatles songs are appealing on a different level because they actually do transcend genres and they are, obviously, on a different level artistically than Nirvana. Complexity and variety are important to me.

Although the Unplugged story is a good story, it’s also not really relevant unless we’re talking about social impact. And I wasn’t. Unplugged stripped down simple music even further and became even more about the image of a rock star “letting his emotions out”. Look how many followed suit. He truly was a trailblazer in many regards.

I think you’re wrong about the image. I think it went very clearly hand in hand with the music; from his personality, to his look, to the band’s attitude, to the video. I didn’t mention how the style was later copied; that absolutely happened and you’re right. What I was saying was that the image was a massive part of why Nirvana was successful, because just like the music, it was something different for the masses. It existed beforehand but he brought it to the mainstream. That’s a big part of why we’re even talking about Nirvana.

I think if you really talked to great songwriters (Elliott Smith [alive], Cohen, Waits) you’d basically get the opinion that I’ve tried to share, and that is that yes, he created strong and unique (to pop) music and he is an icon. But what he created wasn’t stunning in any way. It was timely and it was needed. But neither of us will really know. We can only read public quotes.

Good talk bro. I think we’ve made ourselves understood. :)

I find your comparison between the beetles and nirvana interesting, but here’s what I don’t understand. You say the beetles created poppy catchy tunes and then developed into musicians later. Then you say Nirvana ended before they were able to develop. However; Nirvana was never put together to write poppy songs and then learned to write music later so I don’t see your logic there.

I think you’re making the same mistake a lot of people do when they try to critique Nirvana. That band should not be compared to any pop bands out there. They didn’t try to get famous in the mainstream at all. They were more influential in the way that Black Flag or The Sex Pistols were.

I don’t see your connection to Elliot Smith, Cohen, Waits at all. These artists are related in no way to Nirvana.

Everyone has a different taste in music and it seems like 80s hardcore punk rock isn’t your favorite type so I can see where you are coming from.

I’m also not too sure what you mean about “image”. Grungy punk rockers always have and will dress like that. The fact that the media tried to label it and package it doesn’t make what they did “pop music”.

by SteveNux on Jul 30, 2010 5:29 PM PDT up reply actions

The Beatles comparison was not mine to begin with. And I don’t quite understand yours. And as I explained when I say pop, I mean popular. That’s all. I didn’t say they were trying to become rock stars. And you really missed the point of the songwriters. And their image was, again, not a problem, simply one of a few reasons they became famous. I’m not saying they were fakes.

This conversation would probably reach the point where all the text is crammed to the right side of the screen, lol. So lets avoid it. :)

Yeah although I disagree with Shifty’s stance, I don’t disagree with his logic, steve. The whole premise of my argument was from a songwriter standpoint, which by nature will lend itself to comparisons to the Beatles, waits, Cohen, Dylan etc. Although I haven’t mentioned it in any of my posts, I think that Dylan is as good a comparison to Cobain as Lennon, but in a slightly different way. Lennon and cobain were hooky ditty writers, Dylan and Cobain were raw emotion writers. I find it difficult to compare any of those three with Waits or Cohen because those two are story tellers, the other three are emotion writers. Dunno if that makes sense, but as a kind of parallel comparison I’d say Lennon, Cobain, Dylan are writing two act plays vs Cohen and Waits who are writing 4 act theatrical productions. I mean this as a metaphor..heh.

I do disagree with Shifty about how the beatles progressed…their songwriting skill was there at the start. They may have gotten more complex as people do when they age, but the shift in the beatles writing wasn’t about that. The proof of this is in the Let It Be album, which was really a straight up return to their rock and roll of the mid 60’s, just slicker and by older guys, and Lennon’s Shaved Fish LP which was brilliant yet raw. What changed around Sgt. Pepper/Magical Mystery (actually probably before that, at happiness is a warm gun era) is the production went from straight ahead rock n roll to this crazy, groundbreaking science. That has nothing to do with the songwriting, which stayed good throughout. A good hook is a good hook, whether it’s a 2 track mono recording like hard days night or a 16 track, speed altered, mix of instruments like strawberry fields, or loud punk like the bleach album or 64 tracks of soundscape like NiN’s hurt.

Mild Exception Being Taken

Even early Beatles had some fascinating and influential compositions. I, like you, prefer their older music; but writing off the early stuff as “just catchy music that appealed to young girls” is a mistake, I think.

Nirvana is an underground punk band that was so good, they made it to the big time without compromising their sound or creativity.

Similar bands are Mudhoney and Melvins. Those bands never became as famous, but are much more like Nirvana than the pop bands that Nirvana get pigeon-holed in with due to their commercial success (like Pearl Jam who Cobain called cock-rock sell outs).

by SteveNux on Jul 29, 2010 11:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Some bands are lucky enough to do that. Like Soundgarden. And as we all know, Soundgarden is the best band out of the Seattle movement. :D

I just think Nirvana’s music is far more meaningful to some as an indicator of change than it is on its own. Which isn’t a bad thing, but will it hold up over time? I don’t think so. Not like Soundgarden.

Nirvana was a punk band the Nine Inch Nails is an industrial band…which is to say, I guess they came from that genre, but really kind of transcended it by bringing a new factor into it. Sure, other bands were doing Nirvana’s thing before Nevermind became such a game-changer…but the melvins, the buzzcocks, mudhoney…these guys never hit the public nerve like Nirvana did…why? Because they didn’t have that songwriting gift; that ability to speak to a mass population, from metal heads to pop fans to punk fans, we ALL got Nirvana. We didn’t all get the Melvins.

I wasn’t going to bring up any BSG songs…but now that the gates are open I’d like to say that Something Dark is Coming is one of the most fantastic songs. Subtle, yet powerful. If you close your eyes and listen to it, you can really imagine something bad brewing.

Bear McCreary is a great composer

I remember watching that episode and just being in absolute awe…that version of that song was jaw dropping good, and the way that whole bit was directed and the music mixed into it was a piece of television beauty…that was why battlestar was the best show on tv in years. By the way Sean, it’s a dylan song, hendrix covered it.

Although I never could quite figured out how being a dylan fan was a cylon identifier…

That episode was amazing.

I had been disappointed with what had happened to Starbuck, but when Apollo finished his speech and got in that Viper, and Tigh, Tyrol, Sam, and Tory all came together, and that music started playing…..I knew something was up. Great show from start to finish, was my favourite show when it was on.

I actually met Doral #5 (Matthew Bennett) twice and got his autograph. Really cool guy. And I saw Gaeta (Alessandro Juliani) at the Radiohead concert here in Vancouver in 2008.

I think Im going to watch the Hand of God episode again. The one where Apollo bombs the Cylon fuel base.

…Then Dylan covered Hendrix. Really: he preferred what Jimi did to his song to his own version.

Actually a Bob Dylan song. But Hendrix cover is clearly the most famous version.

Bob Dylan should get more love here… the man is a poet.

I put

Don’t Think Twice, Its Alright as one of the best songs ever.

I agree, I do like that version.

Bob Dylan stands virtually alone and his “Like A Rolling Stone” is continually voted the “best rock song ever,” but there are so many songs that any of us could pick from any genre of music, so let me choose 2 entire albums: Get Happy by Elvis Costello and Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis.

ah yes I always forget it was a Dylan song

Interesting

Never heard Bear McCreary before. This sounds rather like a Tom Cochrane composition.

Worst Soldier in the World, reporting, Sir!

I’m not as convinced, but I didn’t see it in the series, either, which could certainly colour my opinion! On its own, it’s not really to my taste, I’m afraid.

I like ‘life is highway’ actually, primarily because it name-drops vancouver.
