Crisis, what Crisis? Is there a problem with the bottom 6?
via agaudi.files.wordpress.com
With Raymond and Bieksa up in the air and Salo on a fast track for LTIR, the question of who is filling our bottom 6 is the big cap question right now. Some people have raved and railed, saying we're screwed in the depth chart thanks to over spending on the blueline and Malhotra, but let's take a look at some numbers (Shout out to Behind the Net for the advanced stats):
We lost:
Pavol Demitra16pts, 0.17 corsi rating
Steve Bernier 22pts, -0.57cr
Kyle Wellwood 25pts, 0.01 cr
Ryan Johnson 5pts, -1.31 cr
Lost: 68pts, -0.425 average cr
We gained:
Manny Malhotra 33pts, 1.09 cr
Victor Oreskovich 6pts, -1.26 cr
Jeff Tambellini 14pts, -0.5 cr
Gained: 53pts, -0.22 average cr
Sum: -15pts, +.205 average cr
So we're scoring a little less, we're down one depth guy, but we're doing better on the zone control. So, we need one more player
Who's in reserve (BTN):
Cody Hodgson 40 pts projected
Jordan Schroeder 41 pts projected
Sergei Shirokov 30 pts projected
So, pick Hodgson or Schroeder, slot them in and you're up 25 points over last year's roster and presumably your corsi looks all right with those two looking like decent 2 way guys.
We now look like this:
FORWARDS
Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)
Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m)
Jannik Hansen ($0.825m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.666m) / Tanner Glass ($0.625m)
Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m) / Rick Rypien ($0.550m) / Jeff Tambellini ($0.500m)
/ Darcy Hordichuk ($0.775m)
DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m)
Kevin Bieksa ($3.750m) / Sami Salo ($3.500m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Shane O'Brien ($1.600m)
GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) /Cory Schneider ($0.900m)
SALARY CAP: $59,400,000; CAP PAYROLL: $59,940,000; BONUSES: $850,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $310,000
Not great, but not too shabby compared to last year. So, counting Hordichuk's salary, we have basically a cool million to resign Raymond. It's likely Salo's tendon buys us another 500k in cap space due to LTIR, so maybe 1.5 for May Ray. Assuming he's going to be 3 mil, we're 1.5 million over the cap.
So Bieksa gets traded.
And suddenly we have about 1.75 million to play with, assuming it's Tambo and Hordichuk who ship out. when Alberts, Raymond and Depth Player ship in.
We look like this:

FORWARDS
Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)
Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Mason Raymond ($3.000m)
Jannik Hansen ($0.825m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.666m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m)
Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m) / Rick Rypien ($0.550m) / Tanner Glass ($0.625m)
Depth Player ($1.75)
DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Sami Salo ($3.500m)
Shane O'Brien ($1.600m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Andrew Alberts ($1.050m)
GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) /Cory Schneider ($0.900m)
CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $90,000
CAP SPACE (21-man roster): $-490,000 (Remember, Salo's LTIR until Nov, probably, 20 games, or 825,000 in cap -300,000 for 25% of Oberg's contract= 525,000 in relief )
Solid top 5 d-core, a two way scoring threat for the third line and a fourth line of bangers. Hard, mean bangers. And the potential for one more for 1-1.75 mil.
Add an Art Ross Centre, A multiple selke nominee, and four 25 goal scorers, your depth chart looks pretty good.
Is there a problem with the bottom 6? If we trade Bieksa, I don't think so.

Thanks for the visual. I haven’t seen Oreskovich play, so I am really curious about him. If Hodgson doesn’t make it…then we do have a bottom 6 problem in the sense that it’s not (IMO) good enough
Honestly, if BTN’s projections on CHL and USHL to NHL scoring rates are anywhere on point, Schroeder poses an equally strong chance of being our #3 or #4 centre, so we have two chances for a rookie to pan out. Shirokov’s projection isn’t terrible either, if Malhotra gets the pivot instead of wing.
Schroeder was a college guy, though. Does BTN have NCAA projections?
A creep from the cradle, but a hero's what I want to be
Sorry
I meant NCAA, it has it at a .41 difficultly rating, translating to 41% production in their first year in the NHL, with obvious variation. He could put up 100 pts. Or 4pts. The projection is based on averages, but they seem plausible numbers for blue chips on a top tier squad.
Cool.
Although I think Tambo will make it in over Oyster. Although Im probably wrong. Ive seen Tambo play, he’s alright, but I haven’t seen Oreskovich play, I don’t know if he is atrocious.

that looks quite doable. of course, i’m just slightly worried about hodgson. after what happened last year, i don’t want him to be overwhelmed.
training camp will be mighty interesting.

I feel like
If Cody Hodgson, Schroeder, and Shirokov come close to those point projections, the bottom six will be looking quite strong by April. Though, I can’t see Schroeder cracking the lineup until post-deadline at the earliest. And Shirokov has never impressed me. I like the Tambellini signing. I’m expecting him to fulfill that Taylor Pyatt niche that we’ve so been clamoring for over the past year. Maholtra will be steady and is a player I’ve always thought would excel on Vancouver’s third line. But, really, I think everything is contingent on Hodgson. A year ago, we were penciling him as the runaway Calder trophy winner. If his back is legit, he could do some serious damage (or vice versa, if his back is still an issue).
lol Pyatt niche

No
Bernier wishes he could be death to scoring chances like Pyatt was. I used to cover my eyes every time he would get fed and would feebly and clumsily try to stickhandle and shoot.

That certainly looks doable.
I think you’re right about Osterizer getting first crack before Tambo, if only because of his size. His numbers have been, frankly, piss poor; but he loves to play the body, so that’s going to help him stay.
You also only have one rookie in, which is accurate, I think. I actually wouldn’t be surprised to see Malhotra take some time as a 3 & 4 centre, given that he’s going to be our best face-off man by a mile; for that reason, Perrault may get the fourth centre position instead of Rypien, pushing Glass to the 13th man. I think it’ll be Hodgson coming up, but it may well be Schroeder, which is even better for our cap.
But.
If Raymond is not re-signed, then there is some serious trouble coming: that first line-up is a whole bunch less intimidating than the second. I’m leery about projections on rookies: what was Shirokov projected at last season?
We were “lucky” to have Salo’s injury pulling us back under the cap, assuming Bieksa is moved (I think Rome’s getting the call before Oberg does), and that’s not really something to be happy with. Needing injuries to happen in order to make your budget isn’t a good thing.

Funny how injuries have also seemed to come almost very “conveniently” in Gillis’ time here as GM, especially whenever we seem like we’ll be in some cap trouble. You don’t think…

There will be a lot more credence to that theory if the injured party wasn’t Sami Salo…..

I don’t know if conspiracy would be the correct word in any case. Conspiracy, to me, implies some sort of shady behaviour that, if publicly revealed, would be considered immoral or illegal. Canucks have no requirement or need to report the injury status of any of their own players during the offseason, so I see nothing the matter here. If this was known before draft day and free agency day, this just shows that Gillis and co. have done an excellent job of concealing pertinent and valuable proprietary information on their business. So I say kudos!

Actually yeah, I do.
No need for any tin foil, though. I do think Gillis told Demitra to mare really, really sure he was completely, utterly, 100% in tip-top shape before coming back into the line up. It’d be foolish to wear himself out before the Olympics, after all. And then there’s the playoff push, so you’ll want to be rested for that… Not so much illegal, as doing some math before evaluating the extent of an injury.
Salo, on the other hand, I think pooched himself. Hell, it’s virtually a conspiracy theory for him not to be damaged!
