If true, and he’s out on LTIR until the beginning of December, that gives an extra couple months to move Bieksa and figure out what to do with the 9th d-man too. And honestly, who’s surprised by this?

So much for rosterbation...
So Juice is going nowhere…. How could we deal him now? And with that said, where does the money for that final piece come from? I really had my hopes up for Asham or Dorsett (or Filatov).

I wonder if the Canucks might consider buying him out to save $1.75 on the cap. Nice guy and all, but what is he, 36 going on 45? This might be the final straw. So long, Sami, I think.

Blessing in Disguise
Losing Salo sucks. He was our best d-man last year, but it’s quite likely that he could be sliding down the list this year with all the additions and hopeful improvement of Edler and continued improvement of Ehrhoff.
Accordingly, this could actually be a real benefit to the Canucks. Bieksa’s value can probably only go up. If he has a decent start to the year, he’s could generate more in a trade. We could basically deadline-deal him away and not lose anything (assuming Sami’s back). And thank goodness he hadn’t been dealt yet. This probably would mean that we’d only have to trade SOB before the season starts.
Of course, Bieksa could still go, and SOB could stick around. That would actually result in the most cap space – if you delete Salo and Bieksa and keep SOB until Salo gets back, you have a lot more cap space to play with at the beginning of the year. Case in point (I LOVE capgeek):
CAPGEEK.COM CAP CALCULATOR

Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.666m) / Jannik Hansen ($0.825m)

CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $3,525,000
That includes 3m for May-Ray, and deletes Salo, Bieksa and Hordichuk, and adds CoHo. And it results in starting the year with an extra 3.5m in cap space, which is more than enough for a nice upgrade to the F. Now, you’d have to be comfortable with starting the year with a bottom pairing that includes 2 of SOB, Alberts and Rome, but that’s not the end of the world.
The other thing, of course, that this could do is open up the ability to resign Mitchell if SOB gets moved. You could always hack SOB from that roster and include Mitchell instead. Or hack SOB and Alberts, keep Bieksa and add Mitchell. Lots of options.
Now that I’ve gone through and thought of all that, I’m sure it’ll end up being a bad report and he’ll be fine, and we can go back to regularly scheduled programming.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.
Remember, once Salo returns, he’s back on the payroll. So I wouldn’t get too far ahead of ourselves filling in his salary space.
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 23, 2010 8:26 AM PDT up reply actions
True
But there is lots of time for a) someone else to get injured, and b) deal with Salo being healthy when that actually happens.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.
The problem is that as soon as Salo is healthy, we’ll be in a very tight spot with little time to deal with it. As soon as a good option for dumping Bieksa is offered, we should take it, not try and wait until Salo’s nearly back.
by Beantown Canuck on Jul 23, 2010 10:33 AM PDT up reply actions
Fair enough
Perhaps a better option then might be to trade Bieksa, but keep SOB for now? Or just resign Willie.
I have to think that the chances of Willie resigning (on the assumption we could get him at a discounted rate on a one year deal) just went up.
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.
Oh isn't that enticing...
I’d love to bring Mitchell back. Let’s just keep a bottom pairing of Mitchell and Bieksa. Pretty please? Just leave Salo on the LTIR til the playoffs. He’ll probably hurt his knee, quad, and left ankle by the time he’s done rehabbing the Achilles.

It’s not like losing Salo leaves the Nucks in dire straits. They still have 4 top-4 D (E’s Nuts [Edler, Ehrhoff], Monster Ballards, and Dan’s Ham House). They need a 3rd pair that can skate 15 minutes a night. And I think a combination of Alberts/Rome/SOB can do that.

It sucks that he’s injured, and he’s good when healthy. But as YC said, he’s never healthy. I just don’t think it’s worth the cap hell created by Bieksa. I still think it would be a good idea to trade him for the valuable cap space. If you don’t trade Bieksa, when Salo gets back you have a top 6 made of top 4 D, and you’re also in serious cap hell, hampering any ability to make moves at the deadline (or before).

That’s what I’m saying. I’m not in the boat of “it’s good that Bieksa hasn’t been traded yet”. The D corps is good enough (on paper, of course) to deal with the loss of Salo without Bieksa, and the Nucks need to free up every ounce of cap room they can. The best way to do that is by trading Bieksa.

I don't see how this changes anything in terms of Bieksa
If we had penciled Salo in as a bottom 3 D man with a top 3 of Ballard, Hamhuis and Edler then we still have Bieksa, Rome, Alberts, SOB and Ehrhoff to fill out the bottom 3. Moving Bieksa for the right pieces still gets us some cap room and thins out the numbers a little. Remember that both Ballard and Hamhuis can eat minutes and that’s the point I think Edler is getting to as well. So your bottom 2 assuming Ehrhoff builds on last season only needs to play 10-15 minutes a night given the opponent. Should we really be spending 3.75 million on a guy who is playing that little? SOB and Rome, or maybe a young guy like Sauve, can cover those minutes until Salo returns. To me this just means we can posture more and make it seem like we aren’t willing to move Bieksa and maybe get a little more in return for him.
Also, I said a long time ago on this site that we needed to get rid of Salo because it’s ludicrous to have a D man on your team that is as valuable as Salo considering how often he is hurt. We are better when he is in the lineup, no doubts about that, but he is hardly ever in the lineup. You can afford to have a player be that important to your team and KNOW that he is going to get hurt. Get someone in who can be equally as important and stay on the ice and you have improved your team immensely. Now that we have Ballard and Hamhuis I think it’s time to let Salo go.

that this probably doesn’t change anything in terms of Bieksa. However, could it reopen the door for Mitchell at the right price? Maybe ship out Beiksa and Alberts (cap hit of $4.8 between them) and resign Mitchell for around $2m or less (on the basis his value has gone down given concerns over his health)?

I’m not sure if limiting his minutes will make much difference in terms of keeping him healthy. Not like he has back problems or groin problems. A concussion is not something that you can ‘tweak’. I suppose the less time he is on the ice, the lower the odds are that someone will smash him in the noggin’, but that’s true for all players.

If healthy
A team that can afford Willie Mitchell in their bottom 6 due to better options for the top 4? I like the way that defence is heading…
Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.
It's not just limiting his minutes
it’s what situations you put him in. Not a lot of hitting goes on for instance when a team is on the PP. So if Mitchell gets 5 of his 12 minutes a night on the PK then that is 5 minutes a night where he isn’t getting hit a lot. That sort of thing.

I'm too young for all the hockey history stuff.
let's assume for a moment that Salo is out half the season
maybe he comes back before christmas, maybe he’s just done with pro hockey, i honestly don’t know which is more likely so we’ll start with a half season. he makes 3.5M, so leaving a 1.75M gap under the cap for half a year will bank enough space to accommodate his return from LTIR in the second half. let’s also give Mason Raymond 3M in arbitration, which is not a conservative estimate. the roster currently looks like:
FORWARDS
Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m)
Mason Raymond ($3.000m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)

that’s clearly not going to cut it. i have to think that bieksa is still on the block, although this might change what the canucks want back. i’m very on board with dumping juice and signing mitchell if you can get him for 2M.
one thing that i’d like to know is how important righty defensemen are to gillis and AV, with bieksa and salo the only right hand shots on the roster and neither terribly likely to play at the beginning of the season.
I see the bright side of this injury: he will be back by end of November, and he already used up his quota for injuries this year. There is no way that he can injure his Achilles tendon TWICE in a season, just like lightning is not supposed to strike the same place twice.

So what happens now?
A lot of people think that this means Bieksa won’t be moved, but if Willie Mitchell gets a clean bill of health, then why not sign him for 2-2.5 million. Bieksa and Salo are both third-pairing defensemen on the team’s depth chart….so why not save some money and have O’Brien and Mitchell there instead. That way you have 1 million in extra cap space accumulating, so that by the time Salo returns, you can fit him without having to sacrifice either SOB or Mitch.
Example: Bieksa mkes 3.750 while Salo makes 3.500. With Salo gone, part of his cap hit is taken off, equal to the time he missed. If he misses half the season, a definite possibility, his cap hit drops to 1.750. So you have to trade Bieksa.
But if you trade Bieksa and sign Mitchell, your saving 1 million in cap space. So when Salo returns, only 750,000 has to be freed up.
