Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

The terms have not yet been disclosed. It's a 1-year, 1-way deal worth $825,000. The Canucks are now $1,183,333 over the cap. So it's only natural that the Province is reporting that the Ducks are taking a long hard look at Kevin Bieksa.

$825,000 one-way contract

that’s what Duthie reported this morning. unless there’s been a change since then, of course (but i doubt it)…..

do you have any other possibilities?

by SteveNux on Jul 22, 2010 4:37 PM PDT up reply actions

If Raymond gets even close to $3 million, who else has to go? Salo has a NTC, Alberts and SOB alone won’t bring them back under the cap and all of their costly wingers can’t be moved without a damned good reason, only Burrows and Sammy have NTCs.

At best, you can move SOB, Alberts and Hordichuk and you’re almost back under the cap. But then is Bieksa really that valuable? Harder to move three lower tier guys than Bieksa who’s a legit top 4.

No its not. Two words – Manitoba Moose. Ok, not for SOB, but for the other two, definitely.

SOB can go to the farm too

and never get called back up. I would be OK with that.

Kuzma thinks its debatable...
General manager Bob Murray wants to add a top-four defenceman and you can start the debate whether a healthy and productive Bieksa can fill that role.

Love that.

Does anyone know what Raymond is looking for, or is he satisfied to let the arbitrators determine that? I think they’re going to be pinned regardless if he doesn’t sign a structured Canuck-friendly deal before it gets to court. Anyone know what the arbitrated term would be, one or two years? Or is it GMMG’s choice?

Someone floated the Bieksa+Raymond+another live body for Bobby Ryan idea. GM BM offered 5yrs at 5mil and Ryan wanted a shorter term to cash in again a few years later. Seems like a lot of the RFA’s this year are satisfied to take a year deal, ride it out with a good performance, and see what they can get next summer as an UFA.

Bobby Ryan is 4 years

away from UFA status. Raymond is 3.

Apparently Ryan also turned down $5 million for four years, too, which would bring him to UFA status nicely. He’s got a couple damn fine line mates, so I don’t know what he’s aiming for. Still, given the way the Arbies have been handing out cash (though I’m okay with Hansen’s number), he could be going for a jackpot total.

2 full years in the league

and 2 30 goal seasons and he was a 2nd overall pick. He wants to get paid I guess and you can’t blame him.

It actually wouldn’t shock me to see Erhoff go. Not that I want him to, but he’s got huge value right now. I also think that if Raymond gets a high number, he’s signed and swapped. Whole new can of worms, there…

Kevin Bieksa

For a trade involving Dan Sexton? He impressed at times last season, though he’s another small guy so I’m not sure if he would fit into MG’s plans.

I wonder if Hansen gets traded as well. He’s an AV doghouse guy and now he has a 1-way deal. Hate to lose him on the waiver wire.
Curious, if he stays, to see how he’d do on the bottom 6. I don’t mind the guy myself

by Sean Zandberg on Jul 22, 2010 4:46 PM PDT reply actions

Am I missing something?

Didn’t he do well in the bottom 6 last year? Every time I saw him play I was impressed and I seem to remember a lot of people calling for him to get more playing time.

I want to see Hansen on the third line this year: love the way he plays. But as you point out, for some reason AV doesn’t like him much, or just doesn’t believe he can do the job.

I could live with Hansen being swapped for a lower-tier older guy
with some deep playoff experience, he would do well on a Pittsburgh or Anahiem team.

May-Ray

I would not be surprised if May-Ray gets anything north of 3m that he’s also headed out. Heck, i could see him traded if he gets 3m.

What about something like, say, Raymond, Bieksa, SOB for E. Kane? Atlanta seems to enjoy making stupid moves.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

by Jevant on Jul 23, 2010 5:37 AM PDT reply actions

Raymond, Bieksa, SOB for E. Kane?

Well, that’s being overly generous on our part if we did that

by Sean Zandberg on Jul 23, 2010 10:26 AM PDT up reply actions

Overly generous?

I don’t think so. The kid isn’t even 19 for another two weeks and he played 66 NHL games last year. He can score and he is tough and willing to stand up for himself. That would be giving up 3 NHL players for one but long term we get the best player in the trade by far so we win the trade. Plus he’s a Vancouver kid so he’d be coming home and we would shed a lot of salary and Atlanta would get to the cap floor. Everyone wins. That would basically be Raymond for Kane and then we will throw in some 1 year contracts to move salary around. I like it but it will never happen.

by Jevant on Jul 23, 2010 11:01 AM PDT up reply actions

Does Mitchell want to come back? If so then yes yes yes. But I get the feeling he may not. May want a fresh start.

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 23, 2010 1:09 PM PDT up reply actions

Why do you think he may want a fresh start? I think Mitchell was highly regarded in Vancouver and treated with respect. Other then a few fans questioning his health which is only fair, I cant see a reason for him to feel like he needs a fresh start somewhere else.

by DD WEST on Jul 23, 2010 1:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I’ve seen suggestions a few times that he and management and coaching staff haven’t always seen eye-to-eye

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 23, 2010 2:00 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm, I never heard any of that. Not to sound like an ass, but out of pure curiosity, what were the disagreements about between Mitchell and the management/coaching staff?

by DD WEST on Jul 23, 2010 2:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t really know. And it’s all hearsay, because I really don’t recall where I’ve read this stuff, but I do recall seeing some reports of this a couple times. It’s all just speculation… all I’m saying is I like your scenario a lot, but it supposes that Mitchell wants to come back! I hope he does.

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 23, 2010 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

The only thing I remember is where management did not know that he was going to question the league when he came back to the media for his emotional speech

by SteveNux on Jul 23, 2010 5:31 PM PDT up reply actions

I think he got called out by AV once or twice for lackluster play… though AV does that to everyone, and twice as much if your initials are SOB.

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 24, 2010 7:39 AM PDT up reply actions

Agreed

I think you’d need all that before Atlanta would even start talking. I’d probably even go Raymond and a b level prospect (plus the d-men) to get it done.

Their D is pretty good

Hainsey, Oduya, Sopel, Bogosian, Enstrom Valabik.

Plus they have Antropov, White, Peverley..plus they should resign Little, Bergfors and Eager.

I am not sure about the numbers or the exact lines but this would be a strong lineup:

Really?

A 4th overall pick who still has 2 years left on his ELC and looks set to be one of the top wingers in the league for two somewhat decent NHL D men who are on expiring contracts and a forward with one good year under his belt who most likely will be overpaid? Seems pretty fair to me.

If MayRay goes...

…Then we’ve got a gaping hole in our front six. That’s got to be filled, and I don’t know if Kane can do that yet, and I’m not wiling to rely on a rookie there to open the season.

And don’t get me wrong: I love Evander, and seeing him here would do me good; but Raymond is a proven scorer who works well with Kesler.

I’m with Sean on this one – Raymond has numbers already. If he goes, we need proven scoring back. But if Raymond gets anything at or over $3 million, I can really see him getting moved along.
