Jordan Schroeder - an elite thinker of the game?
I follow Dobber Hockey quite a bit; it's one of the best places on the internet for Fantasy Hockey advice. Today they have a post about the "it" factor and how certain players just have it and it's certainly worth a read. (The post's mainly about Eberle, but mentions Schroeder in passing)
"Other players that possess this special quality include Sidney Crosby, Patrick Kane, TJ Oshie, David Booth, and Jordan Schroeder." That's some pretty good company there.
Do you think Schroeder could have higher hockey IQ than, say, Hodgson, who was voted to be the smartest player in his draft class?

I do agree with Schroeder having that “It factor”.
And I can see him moving to the wing and being a dark horse to make the team THIS year.
Some little guys just know how not to get smooshed. Hockey IQ and survival instincts…
Thanks for posting, blaurg! Yeah, it doesn’t get much better than Dobber. I clearly have not seen Schroeder play enough. But it gets me excited to hear Dobber say that
I was excited too! Then again, in the article Dobber does say he makes mistakes in judging players (and mentions good ol’ Steve Bernier as proof!).
I’m optimistic about Schroder though! It does sound like he could develop into our version of Pat Kane though. Small, cocky and always hard to hit – just glad he’ll be on our team!
But probably not a douchebag off the ice, which is always a plus.

i’ve always got a bit of a douchey vibe from JS. totally unfounded though.

His attitude was the reason he dropped so far in the draft
Joyce first mentioned this in his Sportsnet blog, writing: “Those who might have talked themselves into disrepute: Guelph’s Holland and UMinn’s Schroeder. Scouts I talked to weren’t much impressed.”
On the HFboards, Joyce was even more tough on the 5-foot, 9-inch, 180-pound Schroeder and his conduct at pre-draft interviews: "Asked what his weaknesses were, he said he didn’t have any. Said he couldn’t really think of anything he needed to work on. Straight-faced.
“Asked who was going to be on his line at UMinn next season, he said that he had already told the coach who he’d play with.
“He was critical of team-mates and coaches and blamed the U.S.’s failure to win at the under-20s on everyone else except himself.
“Those are just a few examples. I could go on but won’t. If you don’t get the idea, then you never will.”
Is that an Edmonton writer
explaining why his meal ticket passed on Schroeder? I am not sure how much stock I would put in that. Plus I am not sure how much stock I would put in what an 18 year old said to scouts. I was a dick when I was 18 and I am not now. Well for the most part I am not a dick anymore. He is young and being around NHL players like the Sedins and Kesler will improve his attitude if it needs it. I also like a player to have a shit load of confidence. That’s better than a guy like Demo who doesn’t produce unless he woke up in a good mood that day.

Thanks for the link, blaurg – I hadn’t read that article. It is an interesting take on why the Oilers passed him up.
The article seems a little biased and didn’t use actual quotes when paraphrasing JS’s comments so it’s only hearsay.
Personally, the reason he fell in the draft is due to size, not cockiness, but only time will tell.
As Section said, players do mature in time.

Yeah, so either he backed out on his word or Schroeder is a character guy.

One thing about Vancouver...
…is that the public service is mandatory. There’s no getting away from going out in the community and doing charitable work if you’re going to play for the Canucks. Anyone who has a problem with that isn’t going to be long for the team.
If someone is too much of a dick, they’ll either be cured or cut soon enough.
I don’t really see it as much of a problem. Gotta love his confidence though. And his attitude is something that can be changed, so I wouldn’t worry all that much about it.

Agreed. I do remember the stories about his apparent arrogance, but that was it: after they came out, there wasn’t a word about it outside an occasional rehash of the same stories.
Not a whisper out of Manitoba about coming in as a late arrival, either. Good sign, because I expect he’ll start the season there! Happy to be proven wrong, of course.
The guy who wrote the article is a Canucks fan, so take that for what it’s worth. But I do agree that Schroeder is a smart player, as is CoHo. They’re both fine prospects and will both be playing full-time with the Canucks within the next year or so.

Even if he is a Canucks fan, it’s curious that he would mention Schroeder instead of Hodgson. Assuming he’s seen a good deal of both, I never would have thought Schroeder was so highly regarded.
Well he was supposed to be a top ten pick
who fell to us, presumably because of his size. He was in fact the 5th ranked North American skater for that draft.

IQ
is one thing, but elite scoring drive is something else entirely, and I don’t think Schroeder has it like the other big-little guys recently do, Kane, Cammaleri, Gionta… I think he’s maybe more likely to top-out as a Brendan Morrison type if that.

I really have no basis for judging these things, so I won’t bother engaging in speculation either way, but Brendan Morrison in his prime is something I’d gladly have on this team any time. I’d rather have a Kane, but Morrison would be just lovely.

well, he did do quite well when he joined the Moose for the end of their season….

I kind of agree with yoata
Schroeder may have elite level hockey IQ but does he have an elite level skill set? We know he can skate but does he have the hands? I hope so but I am not sure.
Thinking about this though reminded me why I think Tony Gallagher is the biggest tool ever. Back when people were questioning Ryan Kesler’s ability, I was never one of them, Tony G said that Kesler didn’t have the hands or the ability to be a consistent scorer in the NHL. What an idiot.

I am the author of this article. Long-time reader of the NucksMisconduct blog as well!
Basically the “it factor” I am referring to is usually found in a certain type of player (Schroeder as opposed to Hodgson). Not to say Hodgson isn’t a smart hockey player (as you said, he is well known for his high level of hockey IQ).
Welcome
