UFA Day 1 Open Thread: Are you ready?

First of all Happy Canada Day! The holiday greets me with a bit of a hangover but who cares? It's July 1st! It's NHL Christmas! It's the day your rosterbation fantasies become a reality..or not....or YES! Finally we are going to see what Mike Gillis has planned as he has made it known that he will be aggressive in the FA market. What's up?: A top 2 defenceman and a bigger checking forward for starters. At least, that is what GMMG claims. Hold on to your butts.
We will cover all NHL signings and trades today. Any Canucks moves will get their own post. Are you ready? No I said ARE...YOU...READY?
- (4:26): OK, back from posting Canucks updates. More trades from earlier: *Thrashers sign Chris Mason to a 2-year $3.7 million deal. *The Flames tempt rioting fate in Calgary by signing Olli Jokinen to a 2-year $6 million deal. Did Sutter get hit in the head too many times as a player? Who knows. Maybe Jokinen will find revival in the land of the lost. *Saku Koivu signs a 2-year $5 million deal with the Ducks. *Adam Bastard Burish signs a 2-year $2.3 million deal with the Stars. *The Stars also sign Andrew Raycroft to a 2-year deal. Adiose Rayzor and thanks for everything! *Matt Cullen (dammit) signs a 3-year $10.5 million deal with the Wild. Great pickup there, Minnesota. *The Bruins sign Jeremy Reich to a 1-year deal
- (1:22): The Canucks have also signed Jeff Tambellini, son of Oilers' GM Steve.
- (1:16): CANUCKS LAND DAN HAMHUIS! Looks like a 6 year deal worth $4.5 per season. WOOO!

So...
What’s everyone feeling today?
I’m beginning to wonder if Hamhuis is a little overrated for what he’s asking.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Ladd/Bolland for the third line.
Wouldn’t mind seeing A-train here, but he’s going to cost too much.
Maybe Michalek if reasonable? But we need to offload someone on D though.
"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"
The Hamhuis card has to be played. Whether he’s VAN bound or not, I think he’s the one that has to move in order for the rest of the top named guys to be moved today.
And hopefully Gillis keeps the contract terms just show of the “are you shitting me?” threshold.

Half an hour to go, actually feels like game time nervous excitement: which GM is going to show up?
Halhuis is worth not more than 3-4 mill max. Ladd would be nice but other bc boys would be welcomed as well.
Here’s what I see- MG needs to beat ALL 29 other teams to get us off to a good start- it s like the lead off inning by your captain. Stan Bowman got Hossa and Madden last year- don’t mind flash or grind it out, FTw MG!

TSNBobMcKenzie – Sounds like Meszaros is going from Tampa to Philly for a second round pick.

I guess that means Philly’s out on the Hamhuis sweeps? But should we have wanted Meszaros? I’m under the impression that he’s stagnated since his early success with Ottawa. But he was a stud for the Vancouver Giants a few years back, got to like that.

Confuses me that they’d go out and get a PP guy like Gonchar when they already have Karlsson, who’s an absolute beast on the PP already and is only going to get better.
And they’re stuck with his ass for 3 years, even if he retires after 1. Bad, bad move by the Sens.

Sens
Anyone else think the Sens are a pretty terribly managed team? I mean Gonchar is good, but he’s not going to put the Sens over the top or anything. I feel like they’re stuck in not-rebuilding-but-not-getting-good mode (much like the pre-Burke Leafs).

It would seem absurd to me if Kovalchuk makes a lot more than Daniel next year. Daniel got the same production in 13 fewer games yet it sounds like Kovalchuk is going to want a monster contract.
Count on it. Kovalchuk’s getting paid a ridiculous sum of money by a team desperate for scoring. I’d much rather have Danny, for sure, but Kovy’s getting paid.

I was told that Hamhuis prefers to play in the Pacific Division. There is a Western Conference preference, regardless of what his agent says. Canucks are most definitely interested. I originally heard he did not want to play there. Now sources say that Vancouver is being considered by him.

Perrault was drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 5th round, 137th overal in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. In his last Junior year Perrault was the league leading scorer for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the QMJHL.
After turning professional, he spent two seasons in the American Hockey League with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and played for the Portland Pirates before he was traded to Phoenix for Sean O’Donnell on March 9, 2006.
In the 2006-07 on October 31, 2006 St. Louis Blues claimed Perrault of waivers before being taken back again by the Coyotes on December 19, 2006.2 Joel also spent parts of the season in the AHL with the San Antonio Rampage and the Blues’ minor affiliate Peoria Rivermen.
In 2007-08 Joel split time between the NHL and AHL scoring 17 points in 49 games for the Coyotes. Over the following two seasons, Perrault remained in the Phoenix organziation but was unable to establish a permanent role in the NHL, relied on as an offensive contributor with San Antonio.
On May 11, 2010, Perrault signed with Swiss team, EV Zug, of the NLA.

I gotta feeling
That Malholtra’s gonna be the clutch two-way guy we need that can do it all when needed. $2.5 per is pricey but we thought the same think about Samuelsson last year, and he proved us wrong. Let’s hope Manny can too
Follow me on Twitter: here
Yeah but Henrik and Kesler are locks for the top 2 centers. Best we can hope for is 3rd line center duties.
Oh I know
Malholtra is our #3/4 C but he can still play the PK and shut down the top lines and then chip in with the occasional point too. Worth $2.5M? Questionable. But a valuable player for sure
Follow me on Twitter: here
but you need a third line center that can play 18. and with Hank being best used when he’s spoon-fed offensive zone time, another defensive center was absolutely crucial.

For everyone saying it was too expensive
Remember this guy led the league in FO% last year playing for a team with high expectations to win:
http://espn.go.com/nhl/statistics/player/_/stat/faceoffs/sort/faceoffPct
62.5% in rebgular season
http://espn.go.com/nhl/statistics/player/_/stat/faceoffs/sort/faceoffPct/seasontype/3
60.2% in playoffs (highest above 400 FOs)
Thank you. I was checking out BTN but his zone starts weren’t uplifting. Middle of the pack but so was his qualteam so I suspect he got sheltered minutes with subpar linemates.

Last season, he was 62.5 per cent in face-off winning percentage and 62.7 per cent in the playoffs. Malhotra has the size – 6-foot-2, 220 pounds – to bring a renovated look to Vancouver’s third line. Malhotra, 30, was a seventh overall pick by the New York Rangers in the 1998 entry draft.

So the Canucks lineup currently looks something like this:
Danny – Hank – Burr
Raymond* – Kes – Sammy
Malholtra – Hodgson – Hansen*
Perrault – Rypien – Oreskovich
Hordichuk
Ballard – Ehrhoff
Salo – Edler
Bieksa – O’Brien*
Alberts, Rome
Luongo
Schneider
- guys are RFAs, hopefully we’ll re-sign them all. As of right now we have $7 million to fill out 2 spots up front (1 goes to Raymond) and perhaps sign another D (be it SOB or a UFA)

Now that we have a chance to sign Hamhuis, we all have cold-feet. Well, it’s more like we didn’t think his prices would be that exorbitant.
I don’t mind the price…4-5 was what we all thought. My concern is the length of term. If it’s got an NTC we may have a bit of trouble.

Well you only have so many variables you can move to inventivize a player to pick you team. There’s only so much salary allowed, that’s capped, by NTC’s, front-loading deals, length of contract, all that’s the shit you have free reign. I respect it.

Right, but it hamstrings you later if the player becomes, say, Marc Chouinard. That’s all. As long as the cap keeps going up, maybe it’s a moot point, but still worth noting.

Tambellini to Canucks!
Follow me on Twitter: here
Wikipedia
Tambellini played Junior A in the BCHL with the Chilliwack Chiefs for two seasons before joining the college ranks in 2002–03 with the University of Michigan, where he served as an alternate captain. After his freshman year, he was drafted in the first round, 27th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. Tambellini decided to forego his senior year with Michigan to turn pro in 2005–06, making his debut with the Kings, while spending time with their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs.
During his rookie season, on March 8, 2006, Tambellini was traded, along with defenceman Denis Grebeshkov, to the New York Islanders, in exchange for forward Mark Parrish and defenceman Brent Sopel.1 He spent his first few years with the Islanders slitting time between the NHL and the AHL with their minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. During the 2007–08 season, Tambellini set the Sound Tigers single-season scoring record with 76 points in 57 games. The following season, in 2008–09, he earning a full-time roster spot with New York, scoring seven goals and adding eight assists in 65 games. He also scored three goals in three games in six games for the Sound Tigers.
In the 2009-10 NHL season, Tambellini recorded his first career NHL hat trick on October 31, 2009, against the Buffalo Sabres
