UFA Day 1 Open Thread: Are you ready?

Dx_gillis_av_medium

First of all Happy Canada Day! The holiday greets me with a bit of a hangover but who cares? It's July 1st! It's NHL Christmas! It's the day your rosterbation fantasies become a reality..or not....or YES! Finally we are going to see what Mike Gillis has planned as he has made it known that he will be aggressive in the FA market. What's up?: A top 2 defenceman and a bigger checking forward for starters. At least, that is what GMMG claims. Hold on to your butts.

We will cover all NHL signings and trades today. Any Canucks moves will get their own post. Are you ready? No I said ARE...YOU...READY?

  • (4:26): OK, back from posting Canucks updates. More trades from earlier: *Thrashers sign Chris Mason to a 2-year $3.7 million deal. *The Flames tempt rioting fate in Calgary by signing Olli Jokinen to a 2-year $6 million deal. Did Sutter get hit in the head too many times as a player? Who knows. Maybe Jokinen will find revival in the land of the lost. *Saku Koivu signs a 2-year $5 million deal with the Ducks. *Adam Bastard Burish signs a 2-year $2.3 million deal with the Stars. *The Stars also sign Andrew Raycroft to a 2-year deal. Adiose Rayzor and thanks for everything! *Matt Cullen (dammit) signs a 3-year $10.5 million deal with the Wild. Great pickup there, Minnesota. *The Bruins sign Jeremy Reich to a 1-year deal
  • (1:22): The Canucks have also signed Jeff Tambellini, son of Oilers' GM Steve.
  • (1:16): CANUCKS LAND DAN HAMHUIS! Looks like a 6 year deal worth $4.5 per season. WOOO!

Star-divide

  • (12:58): Devils sign Henrik Tallinder to a 4 year deal at $3.375 million per. The Oilers sign Kurtis Foster to a 2 year deal at $1.8 million per season.
  • (12:57): Olli Jokinen to Calgary has to be a prank. Reports break that Hamhuis camp looking for 6 year $30 million deal.
  • (12:17): Ray Whitney to the Coyotes. 2 years, $3 million per)
  • (12:00): Toni Lydman signed by the Ducks. 3 years, $3 million per season. Are they out of the Hamhuis race?
  • (11:44): Paul Martin to Penguins. 5 years $5 million per
  • (11:36) Rangers sign Boogaard. Derek Boogaard. The idiot. 4 years, $1.65 per
  • (11:25): Lightning sign Dan Ellis to a 2 year deal. $1.5 million per season says Kypreos
  • (11:24): Coyotes sign Derek Morris to a 4 year $11 million contract. Flyers sign Jody Shelley to a 3-year $3.3 million deal. That may mean Carcillo or Asham are gone.
  • (11:22): OK, have to catch up now after posting the 2 Canucks signings (Malhotra and Perrault)
  • (10:42): Canucks sign Joel Perrault, Flyers sign Sean O'Donnell.
  • (10:35): Damn! Colby Armstrong to Leafs. 3 years $3 million per. Scratch him off my wish list
  • (10:35): Sharks sign Antero Niittymaki. 2 years $4 million. Nice upgrade in goal...not
  • (10:30): Alex Auld to Canadiens. 1 year, $1 million. No Dan Ellis going there.
  • (10:12): Penguins sign Zbynek Michalek.5 years $20 million
  • (10:05): Lightning extend Martin St. Louis for 4 years, a $5.5 million cap hit (per Elliot Friedman)
  • (9:54): Paul Martin close to signing with Pittsburgh (speculation): DONE. 4 years, $22 million
  • (9:52): Senators re-sign Jesse Winchester
  • (9:48): Hurricanes sign Anton Babchuk to a 1-year $1.4 million deal.
  • (9:46): The Blues have signed Alexander Steen to a 4-year extension
  • (9:28): Marc Savard has waived his no trade clause (nope not yet). Apparently Alex Tanguay has signed with Calgary..a 1-year deal worth $1.7 million with a no movement clause. Whoa has his value gone down or WHAT?
  • (9:24): Braydon Coburn to re-sign with Flyers sez Bob McKenzie. Done: a 2-year extension worth $2.2 million per
  • (9:19): Rangers re-sign Erik Christensen (2 year deal, $925,000 per)
  • (9:19) McKenzie reports that the Senators have signed Sergei Gonchar to a 3 year deal worth $5.5 mill per. forgot to mention this: if we clear 1000 comments today I will donate $100 to Canucks' Children's Hospital. It's a day of getting, but can be a day of giving as well
  • (9:08): No deal for Z Michalek. He's hitting the market.
  • (9:07): Boston signs Dan Paille to a 2-year $2.15 million contract
  • (9:04) :Rangers sign 2008 2nd round pick Derek Stepan.
  • (9:00 PST): On your mark...get set...I will do my damned best to keep you up to date.
  • Update (8:57): No deal between Dan Ellis and the Canadiens yet.
  • The Rangers will reportedly sign goalie Martin Biron. $900,000 or just a bit under sez Bob McKenzie
  • Update: (8:50): No last minute deal for Matt Cullen. He will hit the market (Craig Custance on twitter)
  • So much will happen today. The Lightning need a goalie, Ilya Kovalchuk may find a brand new home, the Flames look for scoring, the Leafs look for scoring. Does Kaberle get dealt? Where does the beloved Hamhuis end up? The tension in the air is so thick you can cut it with a knife. The Coyotes are trying their damndest to re-sign Michalek.Henrik Tallinder is going to test the market. Dan Hinote has joined the Blue Jackets' coaching staff.Los Angeles may seek a defenceman before trying Kovalchuk, according to James Duthie.
  • Dan Hamhuis will definitely test the free agent market. Not surprised one bit. Watch for a west coast team to land him.
  • Andrei Meszaros looks to be heading from Tampa to Philadelphia for a 2nd round pick in 2012 according to TSN guys on twitter.*confirmed*

    So...

    What’s everyone feeling today?

I’m beginning to wonder if Hamhuis is a little overrated for what he’s asking.
I wouldn’t mind seeing Ladd/Bolland for the third line.
Wouldn’t mind seeing A-train here, but he’s going to cost too much.
Maybe Michalek if reasonable? But we need to offload someone on D though.

"Playin hurt, baby that don't faze me. I don't got time for pain. The only pain I've got time for is the pain I put on fools who don't know what time it is!"

The Hamhuis card has to be played. Whether he’s VAN bound or not, I think he’s the one that has to move in order for the rest of the top named guys to be moved today.

And hopefully Gillis keeps the contract terms just show of the “are you shitting me?” threshold.

Half an hour to go, actually feels like game time nervous excitement: which GM is going to show up?

Halhuis is worth not more than 3-4 mill max. Ladd would be nice but other bc boys would be welcomed as well.

Here’s what I see- MG needs to beat ALL 29 other teams to get us off to a good start- it s like the lead off inning by your captain. Stan Bowman got Hossa and Madden last year- don’t mind flash or grind it out, FTw MG!

I guess that means Philly’s out on the Hamhuis sweeps? But should we have wanted Meszaros? I’m under the impression that he’s stagnated since his early success with Ottawa. But he was a stud for the Vancouver Giants a few years back, got to like that.

And they’re stuck with his ass for 3 years, even if he retires after 1. Bad, bad move by the Sens.

    Sens

Anyone else think the Sens are a pretty terribly managed team? I mean Gonchar is good, but he’s not going to put the Sens over the top or anything. I feel like they’re stuck in not-rebuilding-but-not-getting-good mode (much like the pre-Burke Leafs).

Perrault was drafted by the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in the 5th round, 137th overal in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft. In his last Junior year Perrault was the league leading scorer for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar in the QMJHL.

After turning professional, he spent two seasons in the American Hockey League with the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks and played for the Portland Pirates before he was traded to Phoenix for Sean O’Donnell on March 9, 2006.

In the 2006-07 on October 31, 2006 St. Louis Blues claimed Perrault of waivers before being taken back again by the Coyotes on December 19, 2006.2 Joel also spent parts of the season in the AHL with the San Antonio Rampage and the Blues’ minor affiliate Peoria Rivermen.

In 2007-08 Joel split time between the NHL and AHL scoring 17 points in 49 games for the Coyotes. Over the following two seasons, Perrault remained in the Phoenix organziation but was unable to establish a permanent role in the NHL, relied on as an offensive contributor with San Antonio.

On May 11, 2010, Perrault signed with Swiss team, EV Zug, of the NLA.

Talk is talk though. At the draft, Bowman said they didn’t need to dump any more salary (which was obviously not true)… and then he dumped Versteeg. And isn’t re-signing Burish. And of course it remains to be seen if they can keep all of Ladd, Niemi and Hjarmo.

    PV,

Now that I think more about it, I’m with you on this one. 3.5M x 2 years, for a guy that you are no longer expecting to be a top line center, all you want is some production from the 2nd line spot. He can probably throw up 50-60 points… right? That’s about what you get for 3.5M nowadays.

by Vancouverguy on Jul 1, 2010 12:51 PM PDT up reply actions

But they brought it up on TSN, the whole reason they got rid of him in the first place is because he wasn’t really accepted in the locker room. They have basically the same team as last year and they’re bringing him back. Very puzzling.

Although my all time favourite moment involving Ollie Jokinen was during the one-off game between the Rangers and the Flyers to get in the Stanley Cup playoffs. As soon as Torts chose Jokinen for the shoot-out tying shot, I, and everyone in Philly knew it was over.

Yeah, I guess it’s not so bad. I’d prefer something just under $3 mill but it’s not unreasonable. What is unreasonable is to bring Olli the Train Wreck back to Calgary. It’s Sutterly ridiculous.

Well you only have so many variables you can move to inventivize a player to pick you team. There’s only so much salary allowed, that’s capped, by NTC’s, front-loading deals, length of contract, all that’s the shit you have free reign. I respect it.

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 1, 2010 1:31 PM PDT up reply actions

incentivize, not inventivize, although i think i like that word

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 1, 2010 1:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Right, but it hamstrings you later if the player becomes, say, Marc Chouinard. That’s all. As long as the cap keeps going up, maybe it’s a moot point, but still worth noting.

It does hamstring you later, similar to have giving away all your draft picks and prospects hamstrings you later. That’s the price you pay for going for it NOW.

They better win now (or in the next few seasons) since some of these contracts will be tougher to move. Again, just noting it for “the record.” The blog record.

2 years to late for the elder Tambellini, but 4th line forward spot, addressed.

by Vancouverguy on Jul 1, 2010 1:22 PM PDT up reply actions

    Wikipedia

Tambellini played Junior A in the BCHL with the Chilliwack Chiefs for two seasons before joining the college ranks in 2002–03 with the University of Michigan, where he served as an alternate captain. After his freshman year, he was drafted in the first round, 27th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. Tambellini decided to forego his senior year with Michigan to turn pro in 2005–06, making his debut with the Kings, while spending time with their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs.

During his rookie season, on March 8, 2006, Tambellini was traded, along with defenceman Denis Grebeshkov, to the New York Islanders, in exchange for forward Mark Parrish and defenceman Brent Sopel.1 He spent his first few years with the Islanders slitting time between the NHL and the AHL with their minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. During the 2007–08 season, Tambellini set the Sound Tigers single-season scoring record with 76 points in 57 games. The following season, in 2008–09, he earning a full-time roster spot with New York, scoring seven goals and adding eight assists in 65 games. He also scored three goals in three games in six games for the Sound Tigers.

In the 2009-10 NHL season, Tambellini recorded his first career NHL hat trick on October 31, 2009, against the Buffalo Sabres

It doesn’t really need to be as long as there’s an exit clause after like year 2 or 3.

I’m pleasantly surprised at what the D have been pulling (simply because I’ve been on the money for all of them, except for Volchenkov). But there are certainly some hilarious moves that were made today (I’m looking at you, Sather).

Chicago is now minus the following players:
    -Madden
    -Sopel
    -Burish
    -Versteeg
    -Ladd
    -Fraser
    -Eager
    -Buff

Who was saying they’d be just as good next year? That’s a huge loss in depth by any standards!

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 1, 2010 1:38 PM PDT reply actions

    True

But their prospect pipeline is now 200x better. They’ll still be a playoff team for the next 10 years.

Sharks are still very good. Kings are on the rise, and if they add Kovy… and Hawks are still good, Detroit is always evil good… the west is not nearly ours, but I like our position.

by Beantown Canuck on Jul 1, 2010 1:43 PM PDT up reply actions

    Kings

are our biggest challengers for the top seed I think, especially if they add Kovy. But I think we can still win it.

Detroit brings it every year, Kings are gonna be good, Sharks with the new Joe is going to be deep.

Don’t count on the other teams out yet.

    NO

    None of that.

The West can be won. Let’s go do it.

Gotta play 'em, might as well win 'em.

by Jevant on Jul 1, 2010 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

True, losing 6 players of any real significance like Madden, Sopel, Versteeg, Ladd, Byfuglien and maybe Eager is a pretty big hit to their depth. Gillis is really going for it in the next few years.

by Big Blue Whale on Jul 1, 2010 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions

I’d say Steeg, Ladd, Madden are going to be big losses.

    Hordichuk

    Hamhuis – Ehrhoff
